1. Forgotten Seeds - The Rise of Genetically Modified Foods
===============================
I love squash. I have my squash preparation system down to a science. The perfect knife, the right cutting board, the way I toss the seeds, my favorite baking dish, and healthy delicious toppings.
A few months ago I came home from Trader Joe's, one of my favorite stores, with groceries and a few acorn squash. As I went through my little routine of food preparation that evening, I was stunned to see that I could skip the "tossing the seeds" step in my squash preparation. There were no seeds!
I've been reading about genetically modified foods for sometime and it's been one of those things that I thought would never hit home. I buy my food at "good places"! These places would never carry GMO foods! Don't get me wrong, I still love Trader Joe's, and I shop there all the time. In no way am I trying to discolor Trader Joes reputation, but I simply want to make a point that GMO foods can infiltrate even our "good stores".
I didn't want to believe that industry was working to manipulate our foods by eliminating the fruit, vegetable, or plant's ability to reproduce on its own. I still don't want to believe that industry is creating an environment where we have to go to them for the seeds each time we want to grow something once.
Dr. Mercola (http://www.mercola.com) has his finger on the pulse of this issue and great information on his site. He writes about the unknown dangers of eating GMO foods. Here are a few of his recommendations on what to look for so you don't end up buying genetically modified foods:
--Avoid processed foods. About 75% of processed foods have transfats.
--Read labels. Soybeans and corn make up the largest amount of genetically modified crops. Sorry, ladies. If you think you are doing a good thing by eating soy - most soy is genetically modified - you might want to research that a little further. It's a controversial issue that I will spotlight in an upcoming newsletter and teleseminar.
--Buy organic.
--Look at produce stickers. They can tell you what type of fruit/veggie you are buying. Here's how: The PLU Codes on the sticker give it away.
--Conventionally grown fruit - four numbers in the PLU
--Organically grown fruit - five numbers starting with #9
--Genetically modified fruit - four numbers starting with #8

2. Don't Drink Water This Way
==================================
I see it all the time in my Bikram Yoga Class. Since the workout is 90 minutes in 106 degrees, the favored beverage is the "frozen water bottle". People often place water bottles in the freezer so the water remains colder longer. Freezing water in plastic water bottles cause the release of dioxin from the plastic. Dioxin is a carcinogen. Dioxin carcinogens cause cancer. Especially breast cancer. This came from a newsletter from Johns Hopkins Medical Center.
Once when I gave an in service on therapeutic use of essential oils in cancer care to the staff of oncology nurses at a prestigious university hospital, the head nurse of their hospice unit, recognizing that I often speak to groups of women, implored me to share this warning. Do not freeze your water bottles to drink them at a later time.
Alternatives? Glass is always the highest recommendation. I use recycled glass juice bottles. There is still controversy about the harder plastics not leaching, and many say the Nalgene bottles are okay. You can find Nalgene water bottles in most sporting goods stores. I just recently read that canteens may show up again on the market. Oh boy, then we have to deal with metals!

3. Spa-ing at the Dentist?
===============================
An emerging trend in the medical/dental industry is spa treatments combined with dental services. Why not? You're already in a chair that's set and ready for a facial or pedicure.How about a little relaxing root canal work? It's a wise effort on the part of the industry to make going to the dentist a more enjoyable process. Mood setting music, relaxing aromatherapy, and manicures and pedicures. 5. Doctors Can't Be Seduced Anymore
==================================
Did you hear about the new stance in the academic medical world? I actually feel a tinge of hope!
Medical schools are modeling and teaching distancing efforts from drug companies’ marketing. So I guess new docs won't be as susceptible to the seductive offerings the ‘pharm’ industry throws their way.
The pharmaceutical industry has a 21 billion dollar marketing budget. Ninety percent of that is directed at doctors.
JAMA published a "Call To Action" paper to look at this relationship between academic medical centers and drug makers.
Here are the recommendations in this paper:
--Ban all gifts, including meals, and even pens
--Prohibit doctors from accepting free samples
--Exclude doctors with financial ties to drug firms
--Prohibit drug makers from directly financing continuing medical education
--Ban faculty from belonging to manufacturers’ speakers bureaus or publishing articles ghost written by industry staff
--Require faculty members with drug company consulting agreements or unconditional grants to post them on a publicly available Internet site
Interestingly and coincidentally, Yale’s medical school published a new "conflict-of-interest" group of guidelines in the Journal of Academic Medicine, very similar to these JAMA guidelines above.
There is a conscience after all, and its showing up in the medical schools as they form the new breed of physicians.

A Tele-Seminar is a great way for you to learn in the comfort of your own home.
Like a giant telephone conference call, there's a special number that you call on the phone and then you push in a code to get into the 'classroom' with others from all around the globe! There is no high-tech here, you don't even need a computer. It's just like making a regular phone call.
The calls can be interactive where you will have the ability to make comments or ask questions, or you can stay silent. The option is always yours. The call can also be in lecture mode so that only the featured speaker can be heard.
Although you can easily mute yourself with the push of a button so no one can hear you while you are emptying your dishwasher or folding your laundry, these Home Spa Lady's Teleseminars are so informative that you just might want to sit with a notepad and pen and take notes from what you are learning. But if the classroom note-taking image does not appeal to you, no worry, the teleseminar is always recorded and becomes available on a CD.
This Thursday the TeleSeminars title is
"How To Wear Essential Oils. . . .. . . . .Nature's Perfect Chemical-Free Perfume".
Here are Some Things You Will Learn:
--How Nature’s Fragrance Works so you can be healthy, not harmed
--Where to wear essential oils on your body so you can apply them easily, every day
--How essential oils work on different parts of the body, so you know when and where to use them
--How essential oils can enhance your own chemistry so you can live optimally every day
--What turns an essential oil into a perfume so you know how to make your choices
--How industry makes essential oils linger longer, and why you may want to avoid the lingering scents
--Qualities to look for when buying essential oils so you can be an informed consumer - especially when it comes to your health
A special guest will be joining this call. She has a career background in the perfume and fragrance industry, but uses essential oils in her personal life as a Mom and for self-care. To find out more and to register for this event, go to: http://www.tinyurl.com/crs5j
Seating at this event, although in your own home, is limited!

7. HSL's Joke of the Week
===================================
When my grandmother was in her late nineties, she decided to move to Ireland. As part of the preparations, she went to see her doctor and get all her charts. The doctor asked her how she was doing, so she gave him the litany of complaints -- this hurts, that's stiff, I'm tireder and slower, etc., etc., etc.
He responded with, "Mrs. Malloy, you have to expect things to start deteriorating. After all, who wants to live to 100?"
My grandmother looked him straight in the eye and replied,..."Anyone who's 99."
