1. Can Hair Loss Be Reversed?
==============================
This is an age old question.
And the answer remains, as it well should, "depending on the
cause".
The known causes of hair loss that we typically hear about are:
--Genetics
--Autoimmunce disorders
--Hormonal Changes
--Emotional Stress
--Medications like chemotherapy
--Nutritional deficiencies (protein, iron, zinc)
From a holistic nutritional perspective there are other dietary
factors that can affect hair loss such as a diet high in sugars
and grains - and low in the good fats.
According to Dr. Mercola (www.mercola.com), sugars and grains
will increase insulin levels which have been associated with hair
loss.
I always like to hear Mercola's take on certain things (he has a
huge website on alternative medicine and natural health).
He doesn't buy into the belief that genetics is a main cause. He
says "While it is clear genetics are involved, the expression of
the genetic predisposition is largely environmentally induced."
So Mercola is basically saying we should look at our environment
as a reason why this is happening and do what we can to prevent
it. Environment here includes the food one eats - as well as
physical surroundings.
Mercola, who is dealing with hair loss himself, states he
firmly believes that if he were to have done these three things
he would not have lost his hair:
--Eliminate grains and sugars (espec. in childhood diet)
--Increase intake of good fats
--Increase antioxidants
(read more on this from Mercola himself:

When we look at the causes to hair loss one should ask "what can
be done naturally to prevent or treat these issues?"
The answer is to find ways to create balance and harmony in
bodily systems, and much of that is environmental like diet and
controlling stress levels.
One natural approach that has shown positive results has been
using an essential oil protocol.
A study in the Archives of Dermatology (1998; 134:1349-1352)
found that certain essential oils promoted new hair growth safely
and effectively for alopecia (hair loss).
Scottish researchers performed the study and the oils that were
used were:
--Thyme
--Rosemary
--Lavender
--Cedarwood
The participants in this study massaged these combined essential
oils in their scalps every day. The control group used plain
jojoba and grapeseed oil.
After seven months of treatment, 44% of the patients using the
essential oils showed significant improvement in hair growth.
Interestingly, the group using carrier oils showed 15%
improvement. It should be noted here that the alopecia was a
temporary form of hair loss (alopecia areata).
Researchers concluded that not only did the aromatherapy work, it
was also far safer than traditional alopecia treatments including
conventional steroids.

2. Essential Oil Tip: Hair Loss Prevention Blend
=================================================
This is one of a few protocols that are out there, it comes from
the Essential Desk Reference.
--10 drops cedarwood
--8 drops rosemary
--10 drops sandalwood
--10 drops lavender
--Dilute this combination with a base oil such as V-6 (50% V-6
with 50% the essential oil blend)
--Massage one tsp into the scalp vigorously and thoroughly for
2-3 minutes.
--Leave on scalp for 60 - 90 minutes.
--Mix 2-4 drops of these essential oils with 1-2 tsp of shampoo
to wash hair when complete

3. Success Tip: Thinning Hair Tip for Women
============================================
Acidophilus!
This is from New Choices In Natural Healing by Prevention
Magazine:
For women, thinning hair or hair loss can be a sign of a problem
in the gastrointestinal tract, says Michael A. Klaper, M.D., a
nutritional medicine specialist in Pompano Beach, Florida, and
director of the Institute of Nutritional Education and Research,
an organization based in Manhattan Beach, California, that
teaches doctors about nutrition and its relationship to disease.
"Occasionally, it's a sign of insufficient stomach acids or that
she's not absorbing protein, zinc and other nutrients," he says.
"If she takes acidophilus after meals for a month or so, that
often helps." Dr. Klaper recommends nondairy powdered
acidophilus, available in most health food stores. He says to
take two tablets between meals (four to six tablets per day) for
at least two months.
(I personally think the Young Living's Life 5 would be great for
this - it's powdered in a capsule form!)

4.Recipe of the Week: Restoration Root Tea
===========================================
Burdock Root promotes hair growth and reduces hair from falling
out. Here is a great "restoration root tea" that has burdock in
it along with other nourishing roots. These roots can strengthen
hair roots.
You can get these roots at your health food stores or your local
Asian Market.
Restoration Root Tea
1 cup dried Burdock root
1 cup dried Astragalus root
¼ cup dried Ginger root
¼ cup Ginseng root
--Mix dried roots together and store in a glass jar.
--To make tea, use ½ cup mixture to 1 quart water
--Simmer roots gently in water for 20-30 minutes.
--Add 2 Tbsp honey, or some agave if desired.
--Pour into a quart jar, roots and all. Let sit several hours or
overnight.
--Store in refrigerator for up to 3 days. Drink hot or cold, 1-2
cups per day.
