1. Mediterranean Diet for Long Life
===============================
The Mediterranean Diet is back in the news again. It comes and goes - depending on the movie star who is using it at the time. But this time the British Medical Journal published a study that came out of the Athens Medical School showing the life extending benefits of eating in this style.
Study aside, what diet sounds healthier to you? Potatoes, fatty meats, and beer (northern Europe, and lots of Americans) or a diet rich in fish, olive oils, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains (Mediterranean - and more enlightened Americans).
Here's what the researchers found: Out of the thousands of participants between 70 and 90 years old who followed the diet for ten years, along with healthy lifestyle habits, this entire group reduced their mortality rate in half compared to the control group. This diet was also shown to reduce heart disease and diabetes risk in pre-diabetic individuals.
The Mediterranean diet includes generous doses of olive oil and is heavy on vegetables, fruits, legumes (lentils, several varieties of beans), nuts and healthy cereals. There is a huge reduction in red meat and dairy products.
Another study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests that the phenols in the olive oil are the compounds that explain the cardiovascular benefits of the Mediterranean diet (further info http://www.news-medical.net/?id=14432)
I find this interesting because phenols are highly plentiful in the therapeutic essential oils. Who knows? oils in general may be the real secret to longevity here (learn more about the phenols in essential oils in my next Teleseminar - Sacred Healing,Sacred Beauty . . . Anointing with Essential Oils, click here: http://tinyurl.com/e33qp)
Here's an easy tip for ensuring a way to get plenty of olive oil in your daily diet. I do this personally because one of my favorite healers and chiropractor, Dr. Simon Aslanian, recommended it:
--Before going to bed take 2 tablespoons of olive oil in 4 ounces of orange juice
--Another great way to use olive oil, and this is a 'Skin Secret' of Sophia Loren's - scrub your skin with olive oil and sugar.

2. Alternative Therapies Popular for Prostate Cancer
==================================
It's always interesting to me to learn about the growing numbers of people and populations who are pursuing alternative and complementary therapies for their diagnosis'.
One group in particular who was recently highlighted in Urology, December 2005, are prostate cancer patients. A study done at University of California - San Francisco followed 2,582 diagnosed men and found that one-third were using some type of alternative medicine. Some of what they used were mineral and vitamin supplements, herbs, and antioxidants such as saw palmetto and lycopene.
Eric Elkin, one of the study's authors, reported to Reuters Health that up to one half of prostate cancer patients using alternative therapies may not even tell their doctors. The profile of these guys using alternative therapies show that they tend to be more educated, have higher incomes, and their cancers are more advanced at diagnosis.
The researchers believe that more study needs to be done in this area. They are anxious to find out how the use of alternative medicines affect quality of life and health in men with prostate cancer.
Here again the question is raised - who is going to fund these studies? Most studies are funded by pharmaceutical companies. It doesn't benefit pharmaceutical companies to do research on alternative medicine because for one reason, they can't get a patent on a plant.
For those of you who are 'essential oilers' and know about the benefits of using therapeutic grade essential oils for healing - you can consult the Essential Desk Reference (purchased at http://www.essentialscience.net) for essential oil protocols forprostate cancer.

3. Chest Rub for Colds - Replacing Vicks
===============================
As kids when my brothers and I had colds, our parents always made sure we had Vicks Vaporub on our chest and one of Dad's white cotton socks safety-pinned around our throat for warmth. That, and some of Mom's chicken soup made us feel so much better.
When I began using therapeutic essential oils for many things, including colds, I wanted to find out if there were any similarities between my childhood remedies and the essential oils I was using, so I did some research and this is what I found:
In 1905 a pharmacist by the name of Richardson from North Carolina wanted to create an ointment to decongest sinuses and relieve chest congestion. He blended menthol - which was newly discovered at that time and was simply an extract from oil of peppermint - and petroleum jelly. He called it Richardson's Croup and Pneumonia Cure Salve. The suggested use was to rub on the forehead and chest and the idea was that the body heat would vaporize it. It stimulated blood circulation and opened blocked sinuses.
The demand for this salve became huge, and there was a desire for a catchier name. Richardson named the ointment in honor of his brother-in-law Joshua Vick. Vick's Vaporub was advertised in many places with coupons for free trial jars. Richardson also convinced the United States Postal Service to institute a new policy allowing him to send out ads for Vicks Vaporub addressed to 'Boxholder' only - which, by the way, was the beginning of'junk mail'.
The Spanish Flu in 1918 that killed twenty-five million people, sent sales of Vicks soaring. Is this great history or what?
Well, let's look at this now. We know that many of the therapeutic essential oils have anti-viral and anti-bacterial qualities, right? And, if you haven't had the experience of Peppermint oil opening up your sinuses, you haven't experienced the true meaning of 'a breath of fresh air' - so understandably Vicks would be effective.
However, we don't like petroleum or petro chemicals of any kind because of their toxic effects on the body. Today, there are many safe and natural salves and lotions to use as a base for essential oils. And peppermint is one of those oils you want to dilute before topical application.
I have two favorite natural and petro chemical free base ointments to use as salves for a chest rub. One is virgin coconut oil. Here are three sources: http://www.tropicaltraditions.com, http://www.bodyecologydiet.com, http://www.herbsoflight.com.
Another great product to use as a base for a salve comes out of Young Living Essential Oils. Actually, there are two: Rose Ointment, and Animal Scents Ointment (can be used for humans too) http://tinyurl.com/aenfp

4. Leftover Roses - Let the Love Continue
==================================
What to do with those beautiful Valentine Roses after they've finished gracing your environment with the aura of love? Let the love continue by garnishing your next lavish bath with floating rose petals accompanied by a beautiful blend of essential oils (in a puddle of plain bath and shower gel base).
Here's how to do it:
--Hold out your hand, put a 'puddle' of the base in your palm.
--Add one drop of each of these essential oils: jasmine, myrtle, rosemary.
--Hold your hand under the running water in your tub and then swish the bath water for 10 seconds.
--Garnish this bath with your Valentine rose petals.

5. Models of Aromatherapy
==================================
There are primarily three different models of aromatherapy that show us how to use essential oils in our every day lives and professions. Sometimes these models contradict each other, and it can be very confusing for the student or new user.
One model of aromatherapy states to always dilute your essential oil with a massage oil, whereas another model approves the use of oils on the body 'neat' (meaning undiluted).
Not only does this discrepancy find its roots in history, but it also is related to the 'grade' of oil that is used. When using a 'perfume-grade' essential oil, you definitely want to dilute it if you are applying this oil to the body - not because of the properties of the essential oil, but because of the potential toxic effects of the fixatives, or fillers that are added to the essential oil.
Personally, I would never use a perfume grade oil on my body, even in the form of a massage. I only want to use therapeutic oils on my body and in my life. The perfume grade oils are usually used for the scent or smell but are often used in massage. Therapeutic grade oils are strictly used for their healing properties.
The three models of aromatherapy are the British Model, theFrench Model, and the German model. For an extended overview of these models, along with great history, ancient spiritual formulas for health and beauty, please join us on Thursday, February 23rd at 8 PM EST for our next Tele-Seminar entitled "Sacred Healing, Sacred Beauty. . .Anointing with Essential Oils," where my guest will be the author of Healing Hands, Healing Oils, Linda Smith.
