1. Thyroid and Hemorrhoid: Something in Common?
===============================================

I had a patient several years ago who asked me if having a
hemorrhoid had anything to do with her thyroid.

I held back my laughter and then I said to my arrogant self "if
someone really doesn't know anatomy then that question makes
perfect sense!"

Both thyroid and hemorrhoid end in 'oid' (which is a suffix that
means "like", "resembling", or "in the image of" - but don't ask
me to address that one - thigh-roid???)

I kindly told her no and explained to her the difference between
those terms.

But even for people who know about the body there is still such a
lack of knowledge and understanding about the thyroid gland.

According to Karilee Shames Phd RN, and her physician
husband Richard, both of whom authored "Thyroid Power", even the
medical community lacks knowledge and understanding about this
very important gland in our body. They say that thyroid
conditions are under diagnosed and under treated.

January is Thyroid Awareness Month.

Over 60 million Americans have thyroid problems, and only 13
million are diagnosed.

In my "Green Tea with Marilee" interview with Karilee, she shared
the many signs and symptoms of a thyroid imbalance, some of which
are:

--fatigue
--depression
--overweight
--dry skin, hair, nails
--dry eye
--low libido
--high cholesterol
--infertility
--miscarriage
--difficulty in menopause

And that 80% of all thyroid sufferers are women.

Karilee described a typical scenario in our interview:

A woman goes in to see her physician and says "my hair
is falling out in clumps, my eyes are dry, my skin is
dry, my nails are brittle, I'm chilly all of the time,
I'm depressed, and I'm gaining weight while hardly eating."

What happens, Karilee says, is that the symptoms are usually
managed without the underlying issue explored and the patient
often ends up on anti-depressants and other unnecessary
medication which can make things worse.

Karilee talks about our toxic environment as a major culprit to
this epidemic condition. She also talks about natural approaches
that one can take to balance out the thyroid.

Dr. and Dr. Shames' "Thyroid Coaching" program is one of the most
progressive approaches in holisitic medicine that I've ever seen!

Gland, it's role and it's care? http://snipurl.com/thyroidpower

2. Essential Oil Tip: Endoflex
===============================

Endoflex helps to balance the endocrine system.

The thyroid gland is part of the endocrine system.

Apply Endoflex on your foot reflex point for the thyroid, or
directly over the thyroid gland (at the base of the throat).

3. Success Tip: A Thyroid Poem
===============================

Butterfly

Shaped like a butterfly she sits within the neck

Wanting only to share her beauty throughout the body and
awakening all cells

Yet faithful to her messenger she will evolve with the
information sent

She can race forth spinning your entire being into a frenzy
awakening you in the midst of the night saturated with sweat and
palpitating heart

Or she can lull you to sleep and make you feel so melancholy or
down right

Depressed and angry for no particular reason

Whatever the effects her presence will be felt by every part of
your being

When feeling fine and neither up nor down do not think that she
has forgotten you

For at this time she simply sits on her throne, her wings spread
wide, as she escorts you through your journey

There have been cells that have turned against her, most of them
without the strength

To fully conquer her fortress

Other have penetrated her and have caused her great harm

But she continues to evolve with the force of such intrusions
while desperately

Attempting to maintain her exalted position

She will fight to save her fortress and keep her chamber safe,
but eventually she

Will give in to the information she receives and must subjugate
her will to the will of the informer

Although her wings may be clipped, she is still a beautiful
butterfly, she remains

Exalted, meaning only well for the body she inhabits and loyal to
her messenger

4.Recipe of the Week: Brown Rice with Kombu
=============================================

Sea veggies are known to be very supportive of the thyroid gland.

Kombu is a popular sea veggie that you can put in rice or soups.

Here is a basic brown rice recipe with kombu , and a 41 second
video I made to show you how to use it.
http://snipurl.com/ricewithkombu

1 cup organic brown rice
1 1/2 cups of spring water
pinch of sea salt
1 strip of kombu about one inch long
Two drops of sesame oil

--Wash the rice and place preferably in a pressure cooker.
--If not in a stainless steel pot, or earthenware.
--Add water, salt, kombu and oil. Cover.
--Bring to a boil on high fire, and then lower the
flame and place a heat diffuser underneath the pot.
--Cook for one hour. Do not uncover the rice while cooking.
--When its ready, remove the cover and stir softly with a wooden
spoon.
--Cover once again and let the rice sit about 5 minutes before
serving.

5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

"Now, what are you planning to do about that excess weight you're
carrying around?" the doctor asked the patient.

"I just can't seem to lose the weight," the patient said. "I must
have an overactive thyroid."

"The tests show your thyroid is perfectly normal," the doctor
said.

"It appears it's your fork that's overactive."
