1. Who Taught Martha Stewart Aromatherapy?
===============================
I wasn't aware that Martha Stewart had an "Ask Martha" column, nor was I aware that Martha used essential oils. In her column Martha was asked to describe essential oils. Here's her response: (Note my comments as to where I think Martha learned about essential oils).
Dear Martha Stewart: What exactly are essential oils?
"Dear Reader: These oils are called "essential" because they are the very essence of plants, the volatile oils that give plants their fragrance and flavor. Most often, they are extracted from a plant's leaves or petals, but in some plants they are found inthe seeds, roots or stems. Highly aromatic, they are used commercially in perfumes and lotions. They also are sold on their own for such uses as aromatherapy.
Different oils are said to have different therapeutic or soothing qualities. For example, rosemary may stimulate circulation. Eucalyptus may help clear the chest when you have a cold. Essential oils are administered in various ways, such as through massage therapy or application to an affected area; by inhalation (dab a few drops onto a handkerchief or add to hot water, and breathe it in); in the bath; and in diffusers, which disperse the scent into the air."
(from Marilee: the following comment from Martha gives me a strong hint that Martha learned under the British Model of Aromatherapy - see my notes below)
"These potent oils are very concentrated and should never be applied at full strength directly to skin. Dilute two to three drops in a tablespoon of almond oil first. They should never be taken internally, or used in greater quantities than recommended."
Martha goes on to answer: "Some oils should not be used by children or pregnant women. If you are pregnant, always consult a doctor before using essential oils or any medications".
"You'll find essential oils at shops that specialize in herbs and at some health-food stores. Don't confuse essential oils with products labeled "fragrance oil" or "craft oil," which are usually synthetic. A good shop also can be an excellent source ofinformation on essential oils."
Notes from Marilee:
There are three models of Aromatherapy: French, German, and British.
--The French model suggests and prescribes using the essential oils neat (undiluted) on the body as well as ingestion. These oils of course are therapeutic grade essential oils.
--The German model focuses on the inhalation of the essential oils. One of the highlighted uses of aromatherapy in Germany is for psychological/emotional balancing.
--The British model stresses diluting small drops of essential oils in larger amounts of a carrier oil such as vegetable oil for mostly full body massage. I have used essential oils sourced out of the British model and found them to be mostly perfume grade as opposed to therapeutic. Therefore the emphasis on dilution. Never put a perfume grade essential oil on the body neat.
It looks like Martha Stewart learned about essential oils under the English model of aromatherapy. Her cautions are important when using a perfume grade essential oil. Many Home Spa Lady readers are users of Young Living Essential Oils. These are ranked some of the highest - if not the highest - quality essential oils in the world. Young Living fulfills the international standards for therapeutic grade essential oils. The two most popular standards are European, ISO (International Standards Organization) and AFNOR (Association French Normalization Organization Regulation).
There are no American standards for therapeutic grade essential oils. The FDA also oversees essential oils and approves some oils for ingestion via the GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) List. You will see "Supplemental Facts" on the labels of most Young Living Essential Oil bottles which tells you they are safe for ingestion.
And by the way, if you have any questions for Martha here's how to contact her: address your questions to Ask Martha, c/o Letters Department, Martha Stewart Living, 11 W. 42nd St., New York, NY 10036. Questions may also be sent by email to mslletters@marthastewart.com. Please include your name, address and daytime telephone number. Questions of general interest will be answered in this column; Martha Stewart regrets that unpublished letters cannot be answered individually.

2. I'm Soy Sorry
==================================
My vegetarian friends are ready to disown me. Why? Because I've been questioning them about the main staple in their diet, soy. And of course their retorts are - "well I only eat organic soy, I don't eat the genetically modified 'Frankensoy'"
I explain to them "its not just about the genetic modification that makes soy so bad, it's about these other things too . . ." then I rattle off bullets that are in Kaayla Daniel's book "The Whole Soy Story" which include:
Soy is a hard to digest protein that is linked to:
--digestive distress
--thyroid dysfunction
--heart disease
--cancer
--hyperactivity and ADD in children
--reproductive disorders
--lowering sex drive, especially in men
--birth defects
--low energy
So then one of my soy-lovin' friends brings up a good point. She asked "What about the Asians who have been eating soy for centuries?, look at how healthy they are!". This is a good question. As a person fond of the soy-plentiful macrobiotic diet,(although I only eat soy in miso soup and none other) I agree with her query.
Let's ask Kaayla these questions. I'm so glad we lined up this Teleseminar. I want to know the answer to that question too!
Kaayla Daniel PhD, known as "The Whole Nutritionist", is a board certified clinical nutritionist with a doctorate in Nutritional Sciences and Anti-Aging Therapies. She authored the book "The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food". She has endorsements from Joseph Mercola, MD (I was really impressed with that!), Larry Dossey MD, William Campbell Douglass MD, Doris J. Rapp MD. These are physicians who are leaders in holism. Her introduction is written by Sally Fallon, author of "Nourishing Traditions".
How would you like to help me drill Kaayla about some of these issues? Together we can get many questions answered and find out why the American Heart Association reversed their position on soy.
Join me on the next Teleseminar scheduled for Thursday March 23at 8 PM EST. Don't worry if you can't make that time slot because you will get the recorded CD of the event in the mail and you can hear the whole thing.
To register go to http://tinyurl.com/or95f And, I'm going to encourage my veggie friends to join too, especially the ones who have an issue with me on this topic. Then we'll see who's going to say "I'm Soy Sorry"!.

3. Favorite Star Spa Treatment For "Oscar" Night
===============================
Here's the word on the favorite spa treatment of the stars preparing for their Oscar Appearances.
A tropical spa in West Hollywood called Lulur is the place that pampers many leading ladies such as Barbra Streisand, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Paula Abdul. On the books in preparation for the Oscars last year were Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kelly Klein.
The Javanese Lulur Body Treatments that are offered are based onan ancient Bali ritual that was given to princesses for 40 days before their wedding. It is often described as the "queen" of body treatments. The traditional treatment starts with a Balinese deep-tissue massage with strong strokes that increase the energy flow. Then, the Lulur Scrub made with rice and turmeric, is applied. Afterwards, the body is coated in a cool yogurt splash to cleanse and freshen the skin, followed with a bath full of fragrant blossoms.

4. Easy Way To Cleanse Your Kidneys
==================================
Although its not summer, and this fruit is not as plentiful, we can purchase fruit seeds to make a tea for cleansing the kidneys.
Watermelon seed tea is a remedy that can cleanse the urinary system, help heal infections, and cleanse waste in the body that leads to skin conditions. This remedy is shared between Chinese Medicine and Naturopathy, but my original source of learning is through the Edgar Cayce readings. Chinese physicians use it to detoxify the body and remove excess heat. It helps to decrease the incidence of canker sores, kidney and urinary infections, and kidney stones.
Watermelon seed tea acts as a diuretic (increases flow of urine) and has often been used after child birth in women to help the kidneys function better if they were impaired during pregnancy.
The cleansing properties of the watermelon fruit and the seeds are related to their citrulline and arginine content which helps the synthesis of urea in the liver. It is also very alkalinizing.
Here is how to make watermelon seed tea:
Place 1 tsp seed in 1 pint boiling water and steep 15 minutes. Take small sips frequently rather than a large quantity all at once. Do this once or twice a week.
Here's where you can get them: The Heritage Store at 1-800-862-2923 or at http://www.caycecures.com. The product codeis WS. The seeds are $7.95 for 4 ounces.

5. Remarks From Home Spa-ers
==================================
It's fun receiving your comments on what I've written about in this weekly ezine newsletter. Occasionally I'm going to share what you've written!
From Mary Mickinak RN, CMT:
Re: Mediterranean Diet (Issue #12 Article 1) Mary writes "My Grandmom and Grandad lived to be 96 and 92. She used all Italian seasonings (home grown) in her cooking, had a garden and we picked blackberries from the bush on her hillside. They raised 11 children, worked from dawn to dusk, drank red wine, and family was everything! That is my motto for good health Italian style!!"
From Gail Rountree RN,CMT,CHTP:
Re: Your Morning Beverage (Issue #13 Article 1) Gail writes "Great tips!! For a couple months I've been starting out my day with a huge glass of purified water with organic lemon squeezed in it...what a difference in how my stomach feels...I used to wake up very nauseated, but with adjusting my diet and this early morning drink, its really helped."
