1. Facelift for Hands
===============================
Bulging veins on your aging hands. The only people that love it are the lab technicians who draw blood or the hospital personnel who start IV's. But the aging population, especially women, want to hide it. So much so that they are jumping on this technique developed by dermatologist Robert Weiss MD from Johns Hopkins Medical Center.
Here's what Dr. Weiss is doing to give aging hands a face lift: He injects a solution called STS into the ropey veins on the back of hands so that they stick together and virtually close. STS issodium tetradecyl sulfate, which is a white waxy solid surfactant.
Dr. Weiss explains what happens from this injection: "One side (of the vein) sticks to the other and it seals it shut and then the body absorbs it." He is also reported saying that the body doesn't need all the veins in the hands and that they will usually stay closed with this procedure. If the body does need one of the treated veins, it will reopen but will be much smaller than it was before.
Well, my lil' holistic nursing mind, and my intuition, is questioning this whole thing. The idea of injecting a solution of something that sounds like it's full of plastics, wax, and petrochemicals to impede blood circulation (venous return) and intentionally collapse a vein doesn't sound too healthy.
I am also wondering why a dermatologist is doing this? Are any cardiologists available for consult on this if there is a problem? Then I'm thinking "did the FDA really approve this? and for what?"
Would I have this done? Not in a million years. I'll let my "healing hands" age with weather, wit, and wisdom. But I also know and trust that my many natural and at-home anti-aging therapies will help delay that problem for many years to come. A few of those being exercise for cardiovascular strength, vitamin C for keeping vessel walls strong, the high antioxidants found in the essential oils I use, and the Ningxia Red juice I drink.
When I read things like this I am always asking "at what cost beauty for this aging baby boomer generation?".
We have so many wonderful, nutritious, healing, nourishing, natural, beautifying options for looking wonderful and feeling great. . .why put plastics and chemicals in the body for a quick fix?. . .this is nothing but "veninity"!

2. Essential Oils for The Blahs
==================================
Whether you want to call it The Blahs, or Depression, feeling down in the dumps is no fun. What makes it worse is when you are in that mental space it feels like there is no way out. Not everyone wants to run to the doctor for drugs these days. They are looking for natural easy ways to help alleviate symptoms at home.
Enter, once again, our friends from the plant kingdom. The vibrancy, balancing, normalizing, cleansing, oxygenating "Life Force" that essential oils can help with are something to speak about. But don't let the "speaking" convince you - try it for yourself. What happens for many people when using essential oils is that there is mood elevation and normalization literally within seconds (I'm talking pure, organic, therapeutic grade oils - not "perfume-y" cheap aromatherapy products.) In Germany psychotherapists have been using therapeutic essential oils for years with their patients.
Those of you who are frequent readers of Home Spa Lady's Tips of the Week know that I favor Young Living Essential Oils for my personal use and for my recommendations.
Here is a Mood Elevating Protocol using blends from Young Living:
Valor Blend - on the bottom of the feet
Harmony Blend - on the Solar Plexus (that's the belly)
Joy Blend - on the Heart
White Angelica Blend - on top of the Head and in the Energy Field (a few drops of each, one right after the other)

3. Healing Touch Touches The World
===============================
The intention behind the work of Healing Touch is to Spread Healing Light Worldwide. Healing Touch is an energy-based therapy that utilizes hands-on and hands-off the body to balance and clear the energy field of the receiver. It allows inner and outer healing to take place physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Along with studying Healing Touch I have also studied other forms of energy healing such as Reiki, four years at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing Science, and Intuition Training with Caroline Myss and Norm Shealy. Although these trainings and techniques are incredibly valuable, I still find myself gravitating to the work of Healing Touch. It's probably because of my background in nursing (Healing Touch was born out of the nursing profession but you don't have to be a nurse to train in the certification process). It's also because the educational process in the Healing Touch Certification Program is so accessible to so many people all over the world, I love participating as an Instructor in proliferating this work with ease and credibility.
I have seen this therapy make huge differences in peoples bodies and lives. There is no greater joy than to teach this work to people who are passionate about learning it. Many health care professionals study Healing Touch and incorporate it into their practices, but people with all different backgrounds learn it too. It is valuable to know Healing Touch even for home care offamily and friends.
This past Monday March 6th celebrated the annual Healing Touch International Day and practitioners of the work throughout the world shared ceremony in many ways. In our area practitioners ofHealing Touch, some certified, and many in their apprenticeship process, celebrated this day by offering lectures throughout the day, along with free trial sessions at our local library.
In Florida, a Healing Touch practitioner who is also a nurse was highlighted on her local news channel. Follow the link below for the 45 second video news clip. You will get a good idea how Healing Touch can work in the hospital setting.

4. Body Wraps for Detox
==================================
It's the body's natural instinct to cleanse itself in spring time. We can do several things to assist that process. One way is by wrapping our body in natural cleansing substances that help allow the skin to gently excrete toxins.
Body Wraps can be done easily at home in your own bathroom with the right ingredients. These wraps can tighten your skin and improve its tone. This is especially good for people who have loose skin from weight loss or pregnancy. Therapeutically, body wraps can help people who have joint pain and inflammation.
Here's an easy recipe to which you can add your favoriteessential oil:
Use 1 cup of green healing clay (see source for this below)
1/4 cup sea salt2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cups purified hot (almost boiling) water
A few drops of your favorite essential oil
--Place a few drops of the essential oil into the sea salt and stir
--Dissolve the sea salt in water
--Add olive oil and clay and stir
--You want a wet paste so add more water if necessary
--Rub mixture over your entire body and cover yourself with a clean, white (all cotton) sheet. Make sure the sheet is taut on your body.
Lay in the empty tub for 45 - 60 minutes.
Set-up tips before you get started:
--Create your relaxation environment (i.e. candles and music)
--Make sure you are well hydrated
--Have a mineral drink after the wrap
--Throw a blanket on top of your sheet-wrapped body
--Take a "warm to hot" shower before your wrap to open your pores
Where to get your clay: The Heritage Store1-800-862-2923 http://www.caycecures.com/
Product Code ASC: Aztec Secret 1 lb. $9.95
Essential oil recommendations: Lavender, sage, lemon, sandalwood, lemongrass, rosemary, grapefruit Order oils: http://tinyurl.com/aenfp

5. America's Favorite Health Food?

"Are you serious? Soy is bad for us?"
I've been listening to comments like this from so many people this past week as I continue to talk about my upcoming Tele-Seminar with Kaayla Daniel PhD, author of "The Whole Soy Story". Her book is "blowing the lid off of nutritional dogma", as stated on her website. William Campbell Douglass MD, says that "this is the most important nutritional book of the decade".
Besides learning about why the American Heart Association reversed their position on soy, we'll also find out about the studies that link soy to:
--Digestive Distress
--Thyroid Disorders
--Cognitive Decline
--Reproductive Disorders
--Infertility
--Birth Defects
--Immune System Breakdown
--Malnutrition
--Lowering Sex Drive
--Hyperactivity and ADD
--Heart Disease
--Cancer
Kaayla Daniel PhD, known as "The Whole Nutritionist", is a board certified clinical nutritionist with a doctorate in Nutritional Sciences and Anti-Aging Therapies. Her book,"The Whole SoyStory: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food", is endorsed by Joseph Mercola, MD (I was really impressed with that!), Larry Dossey MD,and Doris J.Rapp MD. These physicians are leaders in holism. Her introduction is written by Sally Fallon, author of "Nourishing Traditions".

6. HSL's Joke, or Cute Quote, of the Week

HMO in Heaven
An eye doctor, a heart surgeon, and an HMO executive die and are in heaven. God asks the eye doctor why he should be let into heaven, and the doctor explains to God that he helped people save or regain their sight.
God says, "Welcome to heaven, my son."
God then asks the heart surgeon what he had done in life that should allow him into heaven. "I saved people from death from heart attacks and heart disease," the doctor replies.
"Welcome to heaven, my son," God says.
God then turns to the HMO executive. God asked him what he did on earth for a living and the man replied that he worked for an HMO.
"Welcome to heaven today, my son," says God, "your stay however is up in two days."
