1. Heart Healthy Home Spa Tips
================================
Last week I spoke at a lecture along with two cardiologists on
Heart Health for Women. I didn't wear a red dress but I had my
red dress pin on! (ordered directly from the box tops of
Celestial Seasonings tea!).
I was grateful to not only be presenting some of my Heart Healthy
Home Spa Tips, but to listen to two female cardiologists present
current approaches to cardiac care.
It brought back memories of my Intensive Care nursing days. I
used to be an assistant head nurse of a fourteen bed
Intensive Care unit. Heart attack patients filled a high
percentage of our unit. If they weren't in the unit
for post operative heart surgery, they were there because of a
heart attack or a serious disturbance in their heart rhythm.
It's easy to underestimate heart disease and heart damage in
people because the person usually doesn't look any different on
the outside.
And more often than not people who have heart disease may not
even feel any different for a long time preceding an event.
One of the popular questions to these cardiologists was "how do I
know I have heart disease if I don't have any symptoms?".
The physicians answered the key factors such as genetics, blood
studies, and medical history.
Stress is also a contributory factor in heart disease.
And, although we didn't discuss this at the presentation last
week, I believe 'issue s of the heart' play a vital role. It's
not unusual that when someone has a heart breaking situation it
can affect their heart. Energetically, that makes alot of sense.
Here are three simple, easy, and heart healthy tips pleasures
that you can do at home! (Isn't it nice to think of something
pleasurable to keep us healthy instead of a restrictive?)
--Soak Your Feet In Epsom Salts. . .
-add one cup of Epsom Salt to a tub of warm water
-carefully sit on the side of your tub and soak your feet
for 12 minutes
Epsom salts are made up of mostly magnesium. Magnesium is an
important mineral that most people are deficient in because of
our depleted soil. Magnesium is reported to improve heart and
circulatory health, reduce irregular heartbeats, preventing
hardening of the arteries, reducing blood clots and lower blood
pressure. Epsom salt soaks can also help ease stress and improve
sleep and concentration.
--Sprinkle Lavender . . .
--on your pillowcase at night
--on your wrists and neck in place of perfume
--on your carpet where you spend the most time
--in your car
--in your bath water
Lavender has been shown through research to reduce stress
responses and help lower blood pressure.
--Brew a Cup of Green Tea. . .
--Use one tea bag, or 2 - 4 grams of tea,* per cup
--Fill a kettle with cold water and bring to a boil
--After unplugging the kettle, allow it to stand for up to 3
minutes
--Pour the heated water over the tea bag or tea, and allow it
to steep for up to 3 minutes
Green tea is associated with reduced risk of coronary artery
disease and has claims that its high antioxidant properties may
cut the amount of cholesterol in the artery wall.

2. How Your Heart Works
========================
"Oh, wondrous power! How little understood...to fashion genius,
form the soul for good."
-- Sarah J. Hale
Your heart is a beautifully designed pump whose purpose is to
deliver blood, together with life-giving oxygen and nutrients, to
every cell, tissue, and organ of your body.
Shaped like a pear and weighing about eleven ounces, the heart
sits in the center of the chest, pointing up toward the right
shoulder.
It is a specialized muscle divided into four chambers, two on the
right and two on the left, which are separated by one-way valves.
The heart therefore is in a sense two pumps, because it's right
and left sides are separated from each other.
There are four chambers in the heart, two--an atrium and a
ventricle--on either side. The right atrium is a receptacle for
the veins transporting blood back into the heart. When it has
filled, the chamber's muscle contracts and empties its contents
through the tricuspid valve and into the right ventricle.
The right ventricle transports oxygen-depleted blood to the lungs
across the pulmonary valve and into the pulmonary artery and its
branches.
The blood travels into progressively smaller arteries
and eventually into tiny vessels called capillaries. These
vessels have very thin and delicate linings that allow oxygen and
other nutrients to move into and out of the bloodstream.
The oxygen in the lungs moves across the capillary membranes and
into the blood, where it hooks up with the red blood cells. The
capillaries also eliminate carbon dioxide, received from the
tissues and cells of the body, to the lungs where it is exhaled
into the atmosphere.
Once these exchanges have been completed, the blood moves through
the pulmonary vessels to the left side of the heart. The left
atrium is the collecting chamber. Once it is full, the left
atrium moves its contents across the mitral valve into the left
ventricle.
The left ventricle is by far the most powerful pumping chamber of
the heart. Its contents must be propelled under pressure much
higher than in the other chambers, so the oxygen-enriched blood
can travel through the arteries of the body at a sufficient
pressure to reach every cell and organ. Its powerful thrust sends
blood through the aortic valve and into the aorta, the largest
artery in the body. From there the blood continues flowing to the
arteries.
This extraordinary round-trip takes about a minute and repeats
itself every minute of your life. In an average person's
lifetime, it is estimated that the heart contracts 2.5 billion
times! Each day, the average heart beats some 100,000 times and
pumps more than 2,000 gallons of blood through the equivalent of
approximately 60,000 miles of blood vessels! Your heart is a
mighty organ indeed!

6.Recipe of the Week: Heart Healthy Veggie and Bean Soup
========================================================
Vegetable and Bean Soup
Serves 8
1/2 cup dry fava beans
1/2 cup dry haricots or other white beans
Salt
2 medium onions, cut into eighths and separated
1 carrot, peeled and coarsely chopped
1 celery stalk, coarsely chopped
1 bay leaf
1 bulb fennel, coarsely chopped
1 bunch dill chopped (about 2 pounds)
3 cabbage leaves
1 bunch beet or Swiss chard leaves or 1 pound spinach leaves
3 Belgian endive leaves
Pepper
1 cup Arborio rice, washed
Extra-virgin olive oil for drizzling
Grated parmesan cheese, for serving (optional)
--Soak the dry beans for 1 hour in cold water; drain. Bring a
large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the beans,
onions, carrot, celery, and bay leaf.
--After the water returns to a boil, reduce the heat so that the
soup slowly simmers. Check the beans after 45 minutes, and if
they are still hard, continue cooking until they are almost soft.
--Add the bulb fennel and dill, cabbage, beet leaves, and endive
leaves. Taste for salt and pepper. Simmer for 25 minutes,
uncovered.
--Add the rice, cover and cook for 15 minutes. Serve with a
generous amount of extra-virgin olive oil drizzled on each
serving. You can also sprinkle some parmesan cheese on top

7. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================
A middle aged woman had a heart attack and was taken to the
hospital.
While on the operating table she had a near death experience.
Seeing God she asked "Is my time up?"
God answered, "No, you have another 40 years, 2 months and 8 days
to live."
Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have
a facelift, liposuction, and a tummy tuck. She even had someone
come in and change her hair color.
Since she had so much more time to live, she figured she might as
well make the most of it.
After her last operation, she was released from the hospital.
While crossing the street on her way home, she was hit by a car
and died immediately.
Arriving in front of God, she demanded, "I thought you said I had
another 40 years, why didn’t you pull me from out of the path of
the car?"
God replied, "I didn’t recognize you."
