1. We're 100 !
================

This is the one hundredth issue of Home Spa Lady's Tips of the
Week - I can hardly believe it!

It has been so much fun sharing with you these past two years.
I hope you have been enjoying reading as much as I have been
enjoying writing!

You know how you feel when you hit those milestone birthdays?

You get a little sentimental, right? - and then reflect on what
you've done so far with your life. . .
. . .and then think about what you could've done better, right?
and then you want to plan for a better future.

Well, that is exactly where I am at.

I am a little sentimental because I started this venture on the
heels of losing my mother. I look back and see the healing in
this for me and it has provided a platform for me to still have a
voice to do my teachings without having to be on a plane every
other week.

As I reflect I see how I learned that I can reach into people's
homes and hearths with helpful information, and share
inspiration, education, and fun.

So, I have some ideas for future plans and I want to run them
by you.

But most importantly I want to find out what interests and goals
that YOU have!

So, because I love you and want to find out best how to provide
you with good content, I would like to ask you to take just
5 minutes to fill out this survey. It is an anonymous survey.

I can't tell you how important this is to me and the future of
HSL!

Thank you in advance for caring enough to do this!

Here is the survey - click here and follow the prompts:

2. What Do Centenarians Do to Live So Long?
===========================================

There are some commonalities among people who live to be 100
years old - also known as Centenarians.

Here is a report on a 25 year longitudinal study done on
Okinawans (in Japan) who are reported to be some of the longest
living people in the world.

This information is from Dr. Lam's website - I like his stuff and
would recommend his website (for the content, not the design):
www.drlam.com

Okinawans:

Population with longest life expectancy in the world (average age
81.2).

America is ranked number 18 (average age 76.8)

5 times less coronary heart disease, 40% less cancer, 20% more
strokes.

Death from all causes is 35% less than North Americans. Average
body mass index 18-22 (lean is under 23).

Cancer mortality is 97 per 100,000 (40% less than North
Americans).

Their risk of cardiovascular disease is 80% lower than that of
North Americans. They have one of the lowest homocysteine (under 8
umol/l) and cholesterol level in the world (under 180 mg/dl).

Males have 30% more hormones such as DHEA and testosterone at age
70 than North Americans do at the same age.

Free radical damage as measured by plasma lipid peroxide (a free
radical by-product) at age 100 is half as much as that of a 70
year old in normal population.

Calorie intake is 10-20% lower than the rest of Japan, who
consume about 20% less than North Americans. Okinawans there eat
30-40% less than Westerners.

They follow a East-West Fusion type diet.

Flavanoid intake approximates 100 mg/day (8 times more than
North Americans).

Eat an average of:

--7 servings of fruits and vegetables a day

--7 servings of grains a day two servings of flavanoid-rich soy
products a day

--Omega-3 rich fish 2-3 times a week

--Minimal meat and dairy

--Fat intake is limited to 30% of die salt intake is less than 6
grams per day (3 teaspoons).

--Key foods to eat: Turmeric, bitter melon, hechima, huchiba,
sweet potato, jasmine tea, seaweed, garlic, ginger, onions, and
tomato.

Follows a consistent moderate exercise program with heavy
emphasis on martial arts.

Have a strong social network.

Follows a consistent meditation and stress relief program.

*****************

I also recommend the teachings of Gary Young - the founder of
Young Living Essential Oils. He has traveled the world and
studied longevity and centenarians as well.

There are many Young Living products that help the longevity
factor - including the essential oil blend "Longevity" (see
below).

One of our best products in Young Living is the Ningxia Red
nutrient infusion. It is the highest rated ORAC reading of all
of the juices on the market - derived from Ningxia wolfberries,
or 'goji berries'.

Ningxia Red stops free-radicals dead in their tracks! Free-
radicals are what age our bodies and break down our tissues.

================================
3. Essential Oil Tip: Longevity
================================

Longevity is an amazing oil blend that contains the highest
antioxidant and DNA-protecting essential oils.

You may have a hard time believing this - but the ORAC scale
rating is 1,511,025!

The ORAC scale measures antioxidant ability. A high rating from
the fruits and juices on the market that we hear about these
days, especially wolfberries - or goji berries, run in the
hundreds to low thousands (like our Ningxia Red juice)

This oil blend consists of:

Clove (orac scale 10,000,000)
Thyme
Orange
Frankincense

The best way to use this oil is internally.

The good news is that it is already made up into a natural 'time-
release' capsule (so it gets down to the small intestine to be
absorbed).

Want the best long life recipe with the highest antioxidant
possibilities that you can't get anywhere else?

Take Longevity capsules and Ningxia Red every day!

4. Success Tip: The Hundredth Monkey Theory
============================================

The Hundredth Monkey Theory tells us that if a certain critical
number achieves an awareness about something, then that awareness
is automatically communicated to other minds.

It's a fascinating phenomenon and can be applied in a number of
ways.

Here is how it all started. . . .

The Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, had been observed in the
wild for a period of over 30 years.

In 1952, on the island of Koshima, scientists were providing
monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand.

The monkeys liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they
found the dirt unpleasant. An 18-month-old female named Imo found
she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby
stream.

She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned
this new way and they taught their mothers too.

This was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes
of the scientists.

Between 1952 and 1958 all the young monkeys learned to wash the
sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable.

Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social
improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.

Then something startling took place. In the autumn of 1958, a
certain number of Koshima monkeys were washing sweet potatoes -
the exact number is not known.

The scientists supposed that when the sun rose one morning there
were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their
sweet potatoes. Then, later that morning, the hundredth monkey
learned to wash potatoes.

THEN IT HAPPENED!

By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet
potatoes before eating them.

They saw that the added energy of this hundredth monkey created
the breakthrough!

But the startling thing was that this now habit of washing sweet
potatoes jumped over the sea to other islands - and no monkeys
traveled to take it there. Monkeys on the other surrounding
islands began washing their sweet potatoes.

So, the point is, that if only 'one more person' tunes in to a
new awareness - this "field" is strengthened, and it is picked up
suddenly by almost everyone!

7. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

George the Preacher, in his Sunday sermon, used "Forgive Your
Enemies" as his subject. After a long sermon, he asked how many
were willing to forgive their enemies. About half held up their
hands.

Not satisfied he ranted and raved for another twenty minutes and
repeated his question. This time he received a response of about
80 percent. Still dissatisfied, he lectured for another 15
minutes and repeated his question. With all thoughts now on
Sunday dinner, all responded except one elderly lady in the rear.

"Mrs. Jones, why are you not willing to forgive your enemies?"

"I don't have any." "Mrs. Jones, that is very unusual. How old
are you?" "One hundred years old."

"Mrs. Jones, please come down in front and tell the congregation
how a person can live to be one hundred, and not have an enemy in
the world."

The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, very
slowly turned around and said: "It's easy ... I just outlived
them all!"

========================================
1. Are Drug-Resistant Super Bugs Smart?
========================================

One of my favorite daily reads is the USA Today newspaper.

Yesterday morning (Tuesday,Oct.16th) I zero'd right into the
Health Section. The article "Pressure is on hospitals to stamp
out bacterial bugs" reminded me of my past life as an
Intensive Care Unit nurse.

I worked as a staff nurse and then an Assistant Head Nurse in ICU
for many years. I was involved in dozens of "central line"
insertions at the bedside.

Central lines are like big IV's with a big catheter that is
threaded through a neck vein. They are a port for intravenous
fluids, medications, blood transfusions, and they can also be
used to measure pressures and fluid balance in the patient. Other
locations used for these central lines are the inside of the arm
or the groin area.

These "central lines" are mentioned throughout the article as a
serious source of entry for bad bacteria that cause infections
that don't respond to antibiotics, also called "Super Bugs".

Sterile procedure is always used for these insertions whether in
the operating room or at the bedside. It can happen that
there is a slip up and the sterile technique is broken, which
can result in infection. Infection also comes from carelessness
after the insertion - poor procedure during dressing changes, not
washing hands between patients, etc.

Years back when I worked in ICU and a patient got an
infection (whether they were from central lines,
regular IVs, urinary catheters, and surgical incisions )
it was most likely always taken care of by antibiotics.

Yes, there were some stubborn bugs that necessitated changing
antibiotics, but infections always seemed to clear up.

Today there are infections caused by bacteria that don't respond
to any antibiotics.

It is not uncommon for someone to go into a hospital for a minor
procedure and end up with a major infection. And it's most
unfortunate when it is caused by a Super Bug.

The article mentioned a man who was on a waiting list for two
years for a heart transplant. He was admitted and a central line
was placed in him, which is protocol, and an infection set in and
he lost his opportunity for a new heart.

Hospital acquired infections are happening more and more. In a
2003 study in the New England Journal of Medicine 'catheter
associated infections' tripled since 1975 (yikes! that was when I
was a nurse! well, a nursing student). So here we are in 2007
and I'm sure its gone up even more!

MRSA (pronounced "mersa" - an acronym for methicillin resistant
staph aureous) is one of the antibiotic resistant strains that
are among many hospital acquired infections. Anymore this is a
common secondary diagnosis. And now this bug is prevalent outside
of the hospital!

Why are these bugs resistant to antibiotics now and they weren't
before?

Call me crazy. . . but having a tremendous respect for nature I
believe that these microbes are pretty intelligent and they know
what's going on here. It's nature's attempt to survive.

We think we know how to control nature, how arrogant is that?
(I'm saying "we" as if I'm part of this antibiotic manufacturing
and dispensing regime - but I'm not)! We have no clue how smart
these critters are - but they are sure starting to let us know!

I think these little guys (smart, but bad, bacteria) know what's
coming at 'em when the antibiotics show up on the scene.

They have had enough time over these decades of over-usage to
learn the patterns of these chemical molecules and then transmute
themselves so they will survive the onslaught.

So now what? Besides common sense preventive measures - like
basic hand washing - what else can be done in facing this
challenge so that people don't have to continue dying from
these infections?

Enter Essential Oils! Here's my (very simple) take on it:

Besides essential oils being naturally anti-microbial, generally
speaking, nature takes care of nature.

Nature's inherent desire is to create harmony and balance. When
bugs threaten a harmonious environment, the essential oils kick in
and gets rid of them - respecting the rest of the terrain of good
bacteria.

Essential oils are complex enough and vary per batch so there is
never a consistent pattern for the bacteria to identify.

Essential oils (only therapeutic grade - and yes, I am ALWAYS
referring to Young Living ) are effective against bacteria, and
viruses and fungus. There are even a few specific oils that are
known to attack MRSA.

Researchers at the University of Manchester tested the efficacy
of three essential oils against MRSA and E.coli. Within just
two minutes of contact, it was found that they combatted these and
many other bacteria and fungi.

These essential oils were two forms of melaleuca - or "tea tree"
oil and geranium.

So I say - let's wake up our doctors and our health care systems.

I play my part - when I've had a family member admitted to the
hospital, I bring the diffuser and immediately diffuse in the
hospital room and do all that I can to clean up the area.

Yes, it raises a few eyebrows and gets a bit of attention, but
it's a good way to educate the doctors and nurses and protect
yourself or your loved one.

Would you like to hear from a doctor who believes essential oils
can help prevent infection and would love to see oils used in
hospitals?

If so - you can join us tonight on a "Green Tea with Marilee"
telewebcast. Listen to Joan Barice MD - Harvard/Stanford educated
internal medicine physician talk about the many benefits of
essential oils.

=========================
2. Essential Oil Tip: RC
=========================

Last year at the Young Living Essential Oil convention,
researcher Sue Chao shared the most fascinating slides with us.

Sue studied the effects of YL essential oils on MRSA.

She had MRSA grow in petrie dishes and used several oils - most
of which were effective - but the oil blend that had the best
results against MRSA was RC.

RC has a few different eucalyptus' in it and is actually helpful
for respiratory issues (RC=respiratory congestion).

The petrie dish that had no growth of MRSA, and where existing
MRSA was eradicated, had RC in it.

RC is not only good for MRSA but we can use it on a daily basis
to keep our immune system up.

You can put RC on your feet, on your back, diffuse it, and inhale
it.

For more info or to order contact your Young Living
distributor or go to: http://tinyurl.com/aenfp

By the way - RC is on sale this month!

===================================
3. Success Tip: Robert Tisserand
===================================

"Because essential oils work in a different way from antibiotics,
they do not have the usual side effects, and they tend to
stimulate the immune system instead of depressing it."

-Robert Tisserand, of London, England

===================================
5.Recipe of the Week: Kleenex Soup
===================================

3 cups chicken broth
1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed in a garlic press
Dash of cayenne pepper
Big pinch of oregano
Dash of nutmeg
Generous amount of freshly ground black pepper
Half a carrot, very thinly sliced
Half a celery stalk, also sliced thin
salt
1 egg, beaten
Garnish: Chopped fresh parsley

Heat the chicken broth to a boil, add the seasonings and
vegetables, then reduce heat. Simmer for about 10 minutes, until
vegetables are tender, then strain the soup. Season to taste with
salt. Turn heat to medium and slowly pour the beaten egg into the
strained broth, stirring lightly as it goes in, so it looks like
shreds of Kleenex tissue as it cooks. Remove from heat
immediately after the egg cooks.

Sprinkle with finely chopped fresh parsley and serve.

From Maggie Fex: "This is a childhood soup that our mom made when
we were sick - usually with a bad cold or something like that.
Because of the way it looked, we called it Kleenex Soup - because
the beaten egg looked just like a shredded Kleenex tissue. It's a
modification of egg-drop soup that I have further modified over
the years into a form of Sicilian Penicillin."

"A nice meal for someone who is off their feet, has a cold, or
just needs something easy on the tummy. Leave the vegetables in
the soup for those who love vegetables or who can tolerate a
more "solid" meal. Otherwise, this is a good soup for someone
who has been vomiting and is dehydrated, and has been only able
to keep down clear liquids--it's the next step up from plain
broth. Good for invalids, folks going through chemotherapy or
anyone who is suffering--from dehydration to bruised spirits.
Very easy to do, cheap and fast--and it tastes like you spent
hours in the kitchen instead of minutes. A good "sick" meal is a
bowl of this soup, with a slice of hot, crispy rye toast and a
cup of applesauce. Just the thing for the person who says, "Ugh,
I can't eat" or "I'm not really hungry, but I need SOMETHING in
my stomach.""

=========================================
7. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

Ladies. . .can you relate?

When you have to visit a public bathroom, you usually find a line
of women, so you smile politely and take your place.

Once it's your turn, you check for feet under the stall doors.

Every stall is occupied.

Finally, a door opens and you dash in, nearly knocking down the
woman leaving the stall.

You get in to find the door won't latch. It doesn't matter, the
wait has been so long you are about to wet your pants!

The dispenser for the modern "seat covers" (invented by someone's
Mom, no doubt) is handy, but empty.

You would hang your purse on the door hook, if there was one, but
there isn't - so you carefully, but quickly drape it around your
neck, (Mom would turn over in her grave if you put it on the
FLOOR!),

You yank down your pants, and assume "The Stance."

In this position your aging, toneless thigh muscles begin to
shake.

You'd love to sit down, but you certainly hadn't taken time to
wipe the seat or lay toilet paper on it, so you hold "The
Stance."

To take your mind off your trembling thighs, you reach
for what you discover to be the empty toilet paper dispenser.

In your mind, you can hear your mother's voice saying, "Honey, if
you had tried to clean the seat, you would have KNOWN there was
no toilet paper!" Your thighs shake more.

You remember the tiny tissue that you blew your nose on
yesterday - the one that's still in your purse. (Oh yeah, the
purse around your neck, that now, you have to hold up trying not
to strangle yourself at the same time). That would have to do.
You crumple it in the puffiest way possible. It's still smaller
than your thumbnail

Someone pushes your door open because the latch doesn't
work.

The door hits your purse, which is hanging around your neck
in front of your chest, and you and your purse topple backward
against the tank of the toilet.

"Occupied!" you scream, as you reach for the door, dropping
your precious tiny, crumpled tissue in a puddle on the floor,
lose your footing altogether, and slide down directly onto the
toilet seat.

It is wet of course. You bolt up, knowing all too well that
it's too late. Your bare bottom has made contact with every
imaginable germ and life form on the uncovered seat because
YOU never laid down toilet paper - not that there was any, even
if you had taken time to try.

You know that your mother would be utterly appalled if she knew,
because you're certain her bare bottom never touched a public
toilet seat because, frankly, dear, "You just don't KNOW what
kind of diseases you could get."

By this time, the automatic sensor on the back of the
toilet is so confused that it flushes, propelling a stream of
water like a fire hose against the inside of the bowl that sprays
a fine mist of water that covers your butt and runs down your
legs and into your shoes.

The flush somehow sucks everything down with such force that you
grab onto the empty toilet paper dispenser for fear of being
dragged in too.

At this point, you give up. You're soaked by the spewing
water and the wet toilet seat.

You're exhausted. You try to wipe with a gum wrapper you found in
your pocket and then slink out inconspicuously to the sinks.

You can't figure out how to operate the faucets with the
automatic sensors, so you wipe your hands with spit and a dry
paper towel and walk past the line of women still waiting.

You are no longer able to smile politely to them. A kind
soul at the very end of the line points out a piece of toilet
paper trailing from your shoe. (Where was that when you NEEDED
it??)

You yank the paper from your shoe, plunk it in the woman's
hand and tell her warmly, "Here, you just might need this."

As you exit, you spot your hubby, who has long since entered,
used, and left the men's restroom. Annoyed, he asks, "What took
you so long, and why is your purse hanging around your neck?"

This is dedicated to women everywhere who deal with a
public restroom (rest? you've GOT to be kidding!).

It finally explains to the men what really does take us so long.

It also answers their other commonly asked questions about why
women go to the restroom in pairs. It's so the other gal can hold
the door, hang onto your purse and hand you Kleenex under the
door!

===============================================
1. Good Belly Bugs & How the Appendix Helps
===============================================

One of the biggest contributing factors to many health problems
today is the lack of good bacteria in the digestive system.

Allergies, joint problems, endocrine imbalances, emotional
swings, even autism - and many other problems - share an
interconnectedness with a digestive system that has "improper
flora". That means that there is a lack of good bacteria which
helps to support the immune system and many other bodily systems.

Improper flora - or not enough good bacteria - is related to many
things such as over usage of antibiotics (which kill good
bacteria), hormone replacement therapies, birth control pills,
some other medications, poor food intake, and even stress.

Conventional physicians of today may argue with this (they, who
were never trained in nutrition - or had little training). I say
"let's come back in ten years and have this same discussion"

Well, maybe not ten years - maybe even five!

People are starting to wake up to this perspective of addressing
health by paying more attention to foods that populate the gut
with good bacteria. And the food companies are onto it too -
mostly the companies that are promoting "pro-biotics" such as
Dannon yogurt.

I love playing with these words. "Anti-biotic" means "against
life". "Pro-biotic" means "for life". It's so simple.

So what does any of this have to do with the appendix?

For many years scientists and physicians poo-poo'd the appendix.
"Its a body part that has no value" - I remember learning this in
my nurses training! "No problem - take the appendix out!"

C'mon guys - how could a body part have no purpose? Who is
arrogant here? Do you think G_d would make something that has no
purpose?

Well, this week scientific journals came out with a theory from
surgeons and immunologists at Duke University with this: the appendix
produces and protects good bacteria for the gut.

Not to say that a life threatening appendicitis should not result
in removal of the appendix - but lets' start having more respect
for this little worm shaped organ (sitting as a pouch to the
colon).

What's a good way to keep the gut populated with good bacteria?

-- Do not eat acid forming foods in excess (sugar, caffeine,
meats, alcohol)

-- Eat more alkaline forming foods (vegetables, fruits)

-- Eat kefir, yogurt and probiotics daily

2. Speaking of Bugs. . .Are You Afraid of Spiders?
===================================================

Here on the east coast we are getting into the season where
spiders are plentiful and like to show themselves off.

They fit in nicely with the approaching holiday of Halloween,
sometimes saving us from the need to decorate as they spread
their amazing webs across our front porches, windows and doors.

The webs are especially gorgeous when lined with morning dew and
shining from the sun, and the spider is curled up in a tight ball
snoozing away.

Maybe you don't think they're gorgeous - most people don't. Does
the thought of being near a spider or finding them in your home
freak you out?

Here is a great little book written by a young woman who is
ridiculously afraid of spiders. If you are too you might be

5.Recipe of the Week: Homemade Sauerkraut
===========================================

One of the best fermented foods that we are all familiar
with is good ole sauerkraut. Here is what Dr. Andrew Weil
says about fermented foods, and he loves his home made
sauerkraut.

"Fermenting does some of the digestive work for you, so
it makes a lot of foods more digestible and the
nutrients in them more bioavailable."

Home Made Sauerkraut Recipe

Ingredients:
1 head round cabbage
1-2 teaspoons sea salt

Preparation:

Rinse the cabbage.

Finely shred the cabbage and place in a bowl.

Add the sea salt and mix well. Keep mixing until the
cabbage starts to get moist.

Place a plate on top of the cabbage. Place a weight such a
s a jug of water on top of the plate.

Leave the cabbage overnight.

Remove the weight.

Squeeze out the excess liquid.

Push the cabbage into a clean jar. Make sure the cabbage is right
to the top of the jar. You can add a piece of sourdough whole wheat
bread to fill the space at the top.

Screw the lid on tight. Leave in a cool dark place for at
least 1-2 weeks.

After opening, store in the fridge.

Rinse if the taste is too salty.

7. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

A Message by George Carlin

"These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion"

The paradox of our time in history is that
we have taller buildings but shorter tempers,
wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend
more, but have less. We buy more, but enjoy less.
We have bigger houses and smaller families, more
conveniences, but less time.

We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge,
but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems,
more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh
too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late,
get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray
too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.
We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've
learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years
to life not life to years.

We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble
crossing the street to meet a new neighbor.

We conquered outer space but not inner space.

We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.
We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice.

We write more, but learn less. We plan more,
but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait.
We build more computers to hold more information, to produce
more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men
and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships.
These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier
houses, but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway
morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that
do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when
there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom.
A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time
when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just
hit delete.

Remember, spend some time with your loved ones, because they are
not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to
someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person
soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because
that is the only treasure you can give with your heart
and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved
ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend
hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold
hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not
be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak and give
time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

1. Do People Think You're Woo-Woo?
=======================================

Making a choice to use alternative health care, eat whole foods,
and receive bodywork to heal our ailments and keep ourselves well
means we are "woo-woo" to some people.

The definition of woo-woo as found in the dictionary refers to
"ideas considered irrational or based on extremely flimsy
evidence or appeal to mysterious occult forces or powers."

In a way I understand their perception that this approach to life
and wellness is a bit woo-woo.

Think about it:

--We stick needles (acupuncture) in the body where there is
already pain

--We take a sugar pellet that holds the energy of the poison that
made us sick in the first place (homeopathic remedy)

--We take our clothes off and let someone we don't know
rub oil all over our body

--We eat the leaves, and the stems, and the roots of veggies and
it's okay if we eat the dirt too (homeostatic soil organisms)

--We cleanse our colon to clean our skin and get rid of our
allergies

--We rub essential oils on our feet to balance our digestive
system

--We question our doctors

These things don't make any sense in the current model of health
care. Does this mean they are wrong, or "woo-woo"?

No. They are not wrong. These things work. We are not "woo-woo".

What this means is that a new model of health care is emerging.
There is a paradigm shift taking place and much of what is
required here is a new way of thinking in order to understand how
these things work. Then we can embrace them, and build on them.

Here is how we can do this based on the above examples:

--"Sticking needles (acupuncture) in the body where there is
already pain"

New understanding: These needles are placed in the energy (non-
physical) body which has a direct influence on the physical body
and which is known (research based) to reduce pain.

--"Taking a sugar pellet that holds the energy of the poison that
made us sick in the first place (homeopathic remedy)"

New understanding: Homeopathy is based on the Law of Similars
where the treatment cancels out the problem with the causative
substance. Homeopathy was a primary approach to health care in
the 1800's and early 1900's. Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia
was a homeopathic hospital.

--"We take our clothes off and let someone we don't know
rub oil all over our body"

New understanding: Massage, and other forms of bodywork and
energy work, are the best therapies to balance the body so that
self healing can take place. All healing takes place from within.

--"We eat the leaves, and the stems, and the roots of veggies and
its okay if we eat the dirt too (homeostatic soil organisms)"

New understanding: Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine said "let
food be thy medicine". Of course he meant the food in its whole
state - the way nature meant it to be -not loaded with artificial
ingredients and preservatives. And with the over-usage of
antibiotics that kill all of the good bacteria in the body -
eating dirt that has wonderful soil organisms can help re-
populate our systems with good bacteria.

--"We cleanse our colon to clean our skin and get rid of our
allergies"

New understanding: Our colon is an important system in our body
to eliminate toxins. When it is not doing its job, toxins can
build in the body. A secondary eliminatory organ, the skin, then
kicks in and takes over. It might break out in rashes and pimples
to try to get rid of things the colon can't. Also, the body
might develop what may be incorrectly thought of as allergies
(runny noses, rashes, coughing) whereas it is just trying to get
rid of the toxins.

--"We rub essential oils on our feet to balance our digestive
system"

New understanding: The plant kingdom has all of the cures for
the body. We can use essential oils - the liquid vitality of the
plant - to take care of many imbalances in the body. The feet
have the largest pores in the body, reflex points related to
other areas in the body, and are great places to rub
therapeutic essential oils - to balance all body systems.

--"We question our doctors"

New understanding: We, as health care consumers, "hire" our
physicians and other members of our health care team to use their
expertise to help us help ourselves heal. Health care
professionals are not our authority. When we hire someone for
their expertise the process of questioning them is normal.

Making a paradigm shift is a slow process. And we who are
considered "woo-woo" are blazing the trails for the much needed
new paradigm to emerge.

Some of you have embraced this as your life's purpose and are
helping to fuel the shift - for that we thank you! You have had
to put up with being considered "woo-woo" for a long time.

So wear your "woo-woo" label proudly - you are doing big work -
you are a big part of ushering in a new era in health care!

A short history of medicine:

Patient: "I have an ear ache."

Physician:...
2000 B.C. - Here, eat this root.
1000 A.D. - That root is heathen, say this prayer.
1850 A.D. - That prayer is superstition, drink this potion.
1940 A.D. - That potion is snake oil, swallow this pill.
