1. Preparing Your Tummy for Turkey
=========================================

As you prepare your menus, your invites,
your shopping lists, and your homes for
this Thursday's Thanksgiving Feast - you
should add another important item to your
To Do list - the preparation of your own
tummy!

I can hear you now "What the heck does she
mean by that?"

Well, let me ask you this. . .
. . . how did you feel the last time
you ate a holiday dinner that included
hors d'oeuvres, wine, bread stuffing, meat,
potatoes, cruciferous vegetables, and pie
topped with whipped cream or ice cream?

Full, bloated, and even distended?

It's not unusual for people to complain
about eating too much, but the complaint
is often accompanied by whines about
bloating and grunts about pain.

This discomfort can be some serious stuff!

I know, I've been there! and I want to do
the best I can to avoid it, short of depriving
myself all of the food.

So what can we do to prepare our own tummy
for these treats?

Two things you can start right away:

--A great probiotic (on an empty stomach)

--Digestive enzymes (right before your meal)

And have on hand a natural antacid (and antacid
is the same thing as an alkalinizer) if you get
to that overstuffed feeling!

My favorites are (of course) in the Young Living
product line:

--Life 5 Probiotic
--Essentialzyme Digestive Enzymes
--Alkalime

Ideally you want to take your probiotics on a
daily basis to help to populate the gut with
good bacteria - the kind that will help balance
the eco-terrain of your internal environment.
It's important to take these on an empty stomach.

Other tips to not feel overstuffed:

--Drink lemon water - this keeps you alkalinzed
throughout the meal

--Eat slowly

--Chew your food thoroughly

--Enjoy the conversation and keep a smile on your face,
even if the family dynamics don't warrant it!

=================================================
2. Essential Oil Tip: Gratitude Oil
=================================================

This is a soothing blend designed to
foster a grateful attitude.

--Idaho balsam fir
--Frankincense
--Rosewood
--Myrrh
--Galbanum
--Ylang ylang

products see your Young Living Distributor or go to

3. I'm Grateful for You!!!

Many of you send emails sharing your gratitude, and it is
always nice to hear from you ~ but what pleases me the
most is that you take this information and use it in
your daily lives, and share it with others who also

=================================

Gratitude is a quality similar to electricity: it must be
produced and discharged and used up in order to exist at all.

~William Faulkner

========================================
5. Recipe of the Week: Grateful Gravy
========================================

Remove the turkey from the roasting pan and set onto a platter.
Cover the turkey tightly with aluminum foil and set aside until
you're ready to eat.

Place the roasting pan onto the stove top over medium heat. Add 2
cups of water into the pan and stir about 5 minutes or until the
drippings and browned bits from bottom dissolve.

Place a strainer over a fat separator cup or bowl. Pour pan
drippings through strainer. Add enough liquid stock to make 4
cups total.

To remove fat from drippings, add several ice cubes to the liquid
and place stock into freezer for 10 minutes. If you're using a
fat separator cup, pour off stock into a saucepan. If you're
using a bowl, remove hardened fat with spoon and place stock into
a saucepan. Expect to have about 4 cups of liquid. Place the
saucepan onto the stove top over medium heat.

Place saucepan over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Add thyme
and sage to the simmering stock. Continue to simmer until the
stock is reduced by 1/4, or until about 3 cups of stock remain.

Pour milk into a small bowl. Add cornstarch and stir to mix
evenly. Slowly pour milk mixture into the simmering stock,
stirring slowly. Bring sauce to a boil and continue to stir until
stock thickens and has a nice shine, about 3 to 5 minutes.

Pour gravy into warmed gravy boat and serve with turkey.

6. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

Thanksgiving Divorce

Charlie in Dallas calls his son Eddie in New York
just before Thanksgiving and tells him,
"I am sorry to tell you but your mother
and I decided to get divorced. I just cannot
take any more of her moaning. We can't stand
the sight of each other any more. I am telling
you first, Eddie, because you are the eldest.
Please tell your sister."

When Eddie calls his sister Julie, she says:
"No way are they getting divorced, I've got to
fly there and see them for Thanksgiving."

Julie phones her parents and tells them both
"You must NOT get divorced. Promise you won't do
anything until I get over there. I'm calling Eddie,
and we'll both be there with you tomorrow. Until then, don't
take any action, please listen to me", and hangs up.

The father puts down the phone and turns to his wife and says.
'Good news' he says, 'Eddie and Julie are coming for Thanksgiving
and they are both paying their own way.'

=========================================
1. Natural Help for Skin Pigment Changes
=========================================

When I was in my early 20's, I was dealing with a skin condition
that my dermatologist couldn't explain, and it had me hiding in
my house.

I was diagnosed with "vitiligo" which showed up as irregular
patches of pale skin - mostly on the top of my feet and behind my
neck.

I was so upset because I was living at the beach and having a tan
was so important to me. Tanning was the worst thing to do if I
wanted to hide the white spots that wouldn't tan on my skin.

My doctor prescribed a steroid cream and antibiotics - they
didn't help at all.

For most people, vitiligo is a chronic condition. For me that
was not the case. Mine went away when I started to adjust my
diet and started to drink raw juices and make other positive
lifestyle changes.

At that time, I didn't know exactly what made it go away, just
like I didn't know what brought it on.

Now, after a few decades of study and experience in holistic
health, nutrition, detox, and alternative medicine - I have a
"hypothesis" related to vitilago. I never read any material about
this anywhere, but like often occurs with me I determine helpful
approaches to health challenges by combining my knowledge,
experience, common sense, and intuitive abilities.

When I received the testimonial (below) from Sandra, my
"hypothesis" was reinforced.

I want to share this information with you in the hopes that it
might help bring awareness to someone with this condition where
they may apply this hypothesis to themselves and explore natural
approaches mentioned here.

First I'll tell you my hypothesis, and then you can read the
email that I received from Sandra a few months ago.

I won't go into how I came to my hypothesis other than to say
that right before I had my case of vitilago I was put on lots of
antibiotics for bronchitis and other respiratory issues. I also
was dealing with some major life stressors.

My hypothesis is that vitilago is a systemic fungal condition
similar to, if not, candidiasis (yeast overgrowth). Internal
fungal overgrowth often shows up on the skin (psoriasis is
another skin condition affected by this).

Overtaxed adrenals are often at play here as well - so stress can
play a big part in contributing to this. Often candida issues go
hand in hand with stressed adrenal glands.

One of the best ways to combat a fungal problem is to not feed
the fungus (it LOVES sugar - so sugar and simple carbohydrates
like bread and pasta - are a big no no) and to use
a natural anti-fungal substance (I'm not talking about man-
made medications - antifungal meds are chemicals that are often
extremely harsh on the liver). Also, resting and nourishing rests
the body to lessen the stress hormones released by the adrenals.

In my opinion the best natural anti-fungal substances come from
our plant kingdom (nature takes care of nature) specifically
therapeutic essential oils.

Many of our essential oils have anti-fungal properties, and the
two that Sandra mentions here are anti-fungal (and they smell so
good!) such as Purification and Melrose.

Sandra is originally from the States and currently lives in
Germany.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marilee,
Hi!! :) Finally I am writing to you regarding Vertiligo.
We met not long after I had returned from India, my energy was
down. My body felt polluted and I had several problems with both
stomach and my kidneys.
I saw your training posted for essential oils and felt drawn to
go. (my chiropractor-also said that he would highly recommend
you) ;)
There we focused on getting my energy back and through the use of
Juva flex and Endoflex applied topically over liver and on my
feet- I "returned" ;)
Eventually I took a class for raindrop technique and bought the
reference book. To my surprise I saw a cure for Vertiligo,
something I also returned home with from India.
All the doctors I had seen had told me that there
was absolutely no cure for this-that it was something I got from
heredity and that perhaps the stress of backpacking across Nepal
and India had taken its toll on my body. I would have to learn
to live with it.
Not that it should matter - but it may be important to note that
I am an educator and a woman. All I could think about was how
people would react to me.
Luckily it was not on my face, but it was all across my chest and
on my shins among many other places. I started wearing shirts
that covered my chest.
Normally I am sporty and like to show off a bit of my chest
muscles - but no more - I was ashamed of my body. No more skirts
or shorts as well. In fact when I did wear them- I saw even
small children look afraid....truly. No one wants to "catch it".
I understood.
I decided to try what the book suggested Melrose and
Purification - I also read a bit about illness as well and heard
that the last places "hit" could be the first to combat. Since
the two biggest problem areas - chest and shins were the last
ones affected- I started there.
I continued applying the oils alternating between layering
Melrose over Purification and visa versa - soon I saw some
changes - but I couldn't be sure.
Perhaps it was my imagination? Slowly I couldn't think it was my
imagination. Except for two small spots (behind my collar bone)
my chest was clear.
I began to feel human again. Then I started to see changes with
my shins, almost like some one was beginning to color in the
white parts - soon what was the size of the palm of my hand
became the size of a small coin and on the other leg nearly non-
existent.
For me, that was enough - since I also believe that certain
things can also come from things inside - I elected to stop
treatment and try and look at why it had happened to begin with
before going further. (If you don't know what I am talking about-
check out Louise Hays or Carolyn Myss)
I now feel ready to get rid of that last bit on my leg and start
battling other areas- for now I will leave the collar bone alone-
its a reminder for me since sometimes I can't believe that it
ever happened - and its a bit of something that I can share when
talking about the wonders of essential oils. :)
If you know of anyone suffering from Vertiligo please share this
- in the newer version they have another suggestion that I have
not tried - but perhaps I will if I don't get success with my
tried and true remedy.
Please note that you will find more info on the internet - all is
about living with this and nothing about curing it. Spelled both
Vertiligo and Vitiligo.
I hope that this can help others.
lots of love, Sandra
I went to an internet marketing conference this past week and it
was mostly professional women and it was fabulous!
4. Recipe of the Week: Organic Homemade Cranberry Sauce
======================================================
Make this the night before Thanksgiving
--2 cups organic sugar or sucanat (Yes - this DOES have sugar)
(sucanat will give you a darker colored sauce)
--2 cups water
Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally for five minutes
Add:
--4 cups fresh organic cranberries
--1 Tablespoon grated orange peel (optional) {I think a drop of
Young Living orange essential oil would be great here!}
--Boil for at least five minutes longer or until the cranberries
"pop"
--The cranberries must pop to release the natural pectin that
will thicken your cranberry sauce
--Refrigerate for at least three hours before serving
5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================
An elderly lady was stopped, waiting to pull into a parking space
when a young man in his new red Mercedes went around her and
parked in the space she was waiting for.
The sweet little old lady was so upset that she went up to the
man and said, "I was going to park there you rude man!"
The man was a real smart aleck and he said, "That's what you can
do when you're young and bright."
Well, this really upset the lady even more, so she got in her car
and backed it up and then she stomped on the gas and smashed
right into his Mercedes, trashing the front end.
The young man ran back to his car and asked, "What did you do
that for you crazy old woman"
The little old lady smiled and told him, "That's what you can do
when you're old and rich!"
==================================================
1. How Did That Cottage Cheese Get Under My Skin?
==================================================
It is not cottage cheese!
It's marshmallows! and they're touching each other!
Well, that's what Dr. Oz says about cellulite,
you can go to Oprah's site and see him giving a
gigundous view of the anatomy of cellulite -
lady's fav'd enemy.
http://snipurl.com/oz_on_cellulite
As you read what he says about cellulite you
will be disappointed to hear that nothing works
to get into those fat cells (darn!)
and he tries to soften the bad news by saying to
ladies that men really don't care.
Well, I don't believe him - on either counts!
But really, when I was doing my Bikram Yoga practice faithfully
every day (fyi - Bikram Yoga is aka "Hot Yoga" and you do series
of postures in 106 degrees for 90 minutes) my cellulite
diminished by at least 40%.
Yes, I also use essential oils too, and of course oils always
help improve everything!
But a great addition to this approach is Cel-Lite Magic (a
massage oil blend from Young Living designed to be applied
directly to the cellulite areas).
Two Tips for Cellulite Reduction
1. Eat a good diet. Staying at a healthy weight reduces the
chances of cellulite forming.
2. Exercise. Reduce fat with cardio workouts and increase your
strength with weight training to help firm up muscles, which will
give skin a tighter and smoother appearance.
We hear both of these all the time - for most everything don't
we?
We can also massage and do scrubs for cellulite areas. Oz and
others would say that topical treatments and creams won't help,
but I believe that it can help break the fat clumps apart so that
when we exercise and do cleanses they would more likely
transform.
Anything improving blood flow is helpful - including some
nutrients! Anthocyanins improve blood flow - guess where we can
get this - in Ningxia Red juice!
Here's a good cellulite busting body exercise:
--Lie flat on your tummy, with your head resting on your arms.
--Slowly left your leg up, keeping your hip on the floor.
--Hold it for five seconds then rest, you should feel your
hamstring stretch.
--Try doing 20 of these alternating legs.
This also happens to be one of the postures we do in Bikram -
(not 20 times though - only two, but the hold time is long)
The causes of cellulite are stated to be things like:
--Poor blood flow
--Hormonal changes
--Genetics
--Stress
--Smoking
--Sedentary lifestyle
--High fat foods and simple carbs
Staying with the basics of exercise, good nutrition, and adequate
sleep for beauty and health.
My favorite cellulite tip.........love yourself and
those lumps and bumps anyway ~ and your body will be
more open to these practices and smoother skin!
=====================================
2. Essential Oil Tip: Beat Cellulite
=====================================
Scrubs and massage can help break apart clumped fat cells in
cellulite areas of the body.
Here is a quick video to show you how to make a cellulite salt
scrub:
http://snipurl.com/video_cellulite_bath
(1 min 17 sec)
A great massage oil blend made specifically for cellulite:
Cel-Lite Magic - Massage Oil combines the healthful benefits of
specially selected vegetable oils with vitamin E and therapeutic-
grade essential oils to tone and nourish the skin. Grapefruit
essential oil is beneficial for improving skin texture, and
juniper oil works as a detoxifier and cleanser that is also
beneficial to the skin.
products see your Young Living Distributor or go to
==============================
3. Success Tip: Leo Buscaglia
==============================
"Everybody needs a hug. It changes your metabolism."
~ Leo Buscaglia
=================================================
4. Recipe of the Week: Lentil Soup with Spinach
=================================================
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons whole cumin seeds add to shopping list
1 large onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1 1/3 cups (8 ounces) lentils, sorted and rinsed
5 cups water
1 can (14 1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes
2 cups packed shredded fresh spinach
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 ounces fat-free plain yogurt
--Place the oil and cumin seeds in a Dutch oven or heavy large
saucepan over medium heat.
--Cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes, or until fragrant.
--Stir in the onion, garlic, coriander, and pepper and cook,
stirring often, for 4 to 6 minutes, or until the onions and
garlic are tender.
--Stir in the paprika.
--Add the lentils and water.
--Cover and bring to a boil.
--Reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for 30 to 35
minutes, or until the lentils are very tender.
--Stir in the diced tomatoes, spinach, and salt.
--Increase the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes longer.
--Serve with a swirl of yogurt.
=========================================
5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================
A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream
parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto
a stool. After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split.
The waitress asked kindly, "Crushed nuts?"
"No," he replied, "Arthritis."
1. Who Taught Martha Stewart Aromatherapy? ==========================================
I wasn't aware that Martha Stewart had an
"Ask Martha" column, nor was I aware that
Martha used essential oils. In her column
Martha was asked to describe essential oils.
Here's her response: (Note my comments as to
where I think Martha learned about essential oils).
Dear Martha Stewart: What exactly are essential oils?
"Dear Reader: These oils are called "essential"
because they are the very essence of plants, the
volatile oils that give plants their fragrance and
flavor. Most often, they are extracted from a plant's
leaves or petals, but in some plants they are found in
the seeds, roots or stems. Highly aromatic, they are
used commercially in perfumes and lotions. They also
are sold on their own for such uses as aromatherapy.
Different oils are said to have different therapeutic or
soothing qualities. For example, rosemary may stimulate
circulation. Eucalyptus may help clear the chest when
you have a cold. Essential oils are administered in
various ways, such as through massage therapy or
application to an affected area; by inhalation
(dab a few drops onto a handkerchief or add to
hot water, and breathe it in); in the bath; and
in diffusers, which disperse the scent into the air."
(from Marilee: the following comment from Martha gives me a
strong hint that Martha learned under the British Model of
Aromatherapy - see my notes below)
"These potent oils are very concentrated and should never be
applied at full strength directly to skin. Dilute two to three
drops in a tablespoon of almond oil first. They should never be
taken internally, or used in greater quantities than
recommended."
Martha goes on to answer: "Some oils should not be used by
children or pregnant women. If you are pregnant, always consult a
doctor before using essential oils or any medications."
"You'll find essential oils at shops that specialize in herbs and
at some health-food stores. Don't confuse essential oils with
products labeled "fragrance oil" or "craft oil," which are
usually synthetic. A good shop also can be an excellent source
of information on essential oils."
Okay - that was all Martha...........
...now please read what I have to say
about this...............
From Marilee:
There are three models of Aromatherapy:
French, German, and British.
--The French model suggests and prescribes
using the essential oils neat (undiluted)
on the body as well as ingestion. These oils
of course are therapeutic grade essential oils.
--The German model focuses on the inhalation of
the essential oils. One of the highlighted uses
of aromatherapy in Germany is for
psychological/emotional balancing.
--The British model stresses diluting small
drops of essential oils in larger amounts of
a carrier oil such as vegetable oil for mostly
full body massage. I have used essential oils
sourced out of the British model and found them
to be mostly perfume grade as opposed to therapeutic.
Therefore the emphasis on dilution. Never put a perfume
grade essential oil on the body neat.
It looks like Martha Stewart learned about essential
oils under the English model of aromatherapy. Her cautions
are important when using a perfume grade essential oil.
Many Home Spa Lady readers are users of Young Living Essential
Oils. Young Living is the premier essential oil company in the
world with the highest quality therapeutic grade essential oils
on the market.
Young Living fulfills the international standards for therapeutic
grade essential oils. The two most popular standards are
European, ISO (International Standards Organization) and AFNOR
(Association French Normalization Organization Regulation).
There are no American standards for therapeutic grade essential
oils. The FDA also oversees essential oils and approves some oils
for ingestion via the GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) List.
You will find "Supplemental Facts" on the labels of most Young
Living Essential Oil bottles which tells you they are safe for
ingestion.
2. Essential Oil Tip: Reduce Stress
====================================
Aromatherapy was discovered through the
use of lavender for a burn. Lavender is
considered the "swiss army knife of all
of the oils" because it is indicated for
many things, not just burns.
I find it to be excellent for reducing stress
and balancing the body, mind, and emotions.
I have a bottle of lavender in every room
in my house.
My favorite place to use lavender
is in my bathtub! and my favorite lavender
to use is St. Maries from Young Living
(did you know there are two types of lavender
in Young Living product line?)
I call my lavender bath "my martini".
I don't drink alcohol but people who do
say martini's help them unwind and relax.
Well, when I'm stressed or frazzled and I just
want to chill out - I go into my bathroom and
have my martini - a lavender bath!
(I must say I have tried this with lavenders
from other companies - like at friends houses
who don't use Young Living - and it is never the
same).
There is something magical about these
oils, and I believe it is the intention,
integrity, and the "seed to seal" process
this company carries out.
overview of the Young Living company, philosophy, key products
and how to use:
3. Success Tip: Joan Didion
=============================
The willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life is
the source from which self-respect springs. ~Joan Didion
================================================================
4. Recipe of the Week: Seared Ahi Tuna with Lavender-Pepper Crust
================================================================
--1 1/2 pounds center-cut Ahi tuna or 4 (4 to 6-ounce) 1-inch
thick sushi quality tuna steaks
--1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt
--2 teaspoons black peppercorns
--1 teaspoon white peppercorns
--2 teaspoons fennel seeds
--1 1/2 teaspoons dried culinary lavender flowers
--3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
--4 cups savory mixed fresh greens and herbs
--Mustard Seed Dressing (recipe follows)
If using the center-cut Ahi tuna, trim and cut the tuna into a
block approximately 2 inches across; then cut into 1-inch steaks.
--Crush the salt, peppercorns, fennel seeds, and lavender with a
mortar and pestle or a rolling pin.
--Lightly oil the tuna with 2 teaspoons of the olive oil; evenly
coat the tuna with the lavender-pepper mixture, patting off any
excess.
--In a heavy bottomed saute pan or a cast-iron pan, heat the
remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil.
--Increase the heat to high and place the tuna in the pan.
--Sear for 1 minutes, then turn over carefully, reducing the heat
to medium.
--Sear the other side for 1 more minutes until medium rare.
--Remove from heat and immediately refrigerate the tuna for at
least 1 hour but no more than 3 hours.
--To serve, arrange the greens on chilled individual serving
plates.
--Drizzle with Mustard Seed Dressing.
--Thinly slice the tuna and arrange on top of the dressed greens.
MUSTARD SEED DRESSING:
4 tablespoons prepared whole-grain mustard
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 teaspoons toasted mustard seed
2 tablespoons seasoned rice vinegar
3 tablespoons vegetable stock or water
1 teaspoon honey (or to taste)
Coarse kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
--Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
--Place mustard seeds in a baking pan.
--Place in oven and roast for a couple of minutes (watch
carefully so the seeds don't burn).
--Remove from oven and let cool.
--Whisk all the ingredients together and season to taste.
NOTE: Adding too much lavender to your recipe can be like eating
perfume and will make your dish bitter. Because of the strong
flavor of lavender, the secret is that a little goes a long
way.
5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================
A New York woman was at her hairdresser's on Park Avenue getting
her hair styled prior to a trip to Rome with her boyfriend. She
mentioned the trip to the hairdresser, who responded,
"Rome?" Why would anyone want to go there? It's crowded and dirty
and full of Italians. You're crazy to go to Rome. So, how are you
getting there?"
"We're taking Continental," was the reply. "We got a great rate!"
"Continental?" exclaimed the hairdresser. "That's a terrible
airline. Their planes are old, their flight attendants are ugly,
and they're always late. So, where are you staying in Rome?"
"We'll be at this exclusive little place over on Rome's left bank
called Teste..."
"Don't go any further. I know that place. Everybody thinks its
gonna be something special and exclusive, but it's really a dump,
the worst hotel in the city! The rooms are small, the service is
surly and they're overpriced. So, whatcha doing when you get
there?"
"We're going to go to see the Vatican and we hope to see the
Pope."
"That's rich," laughed the hairdresser. "You and a million other
people trying to see him. He'll look the size of an ant. Boy,
good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You're really going to
need it."
A month later, the woman again came in for a hairdo. The
hairdresser asked her about her trip to Rome.
"It was wonderful," explained the woman, "not only were we on
time in one of Continental's brand new planes, but it was
overbooked and they bumped us up to first class. The food and
wine were wonderful, and I had a handsome 28-year-old steward who
waited on me hand and foot. And the hotel -- it was great! They'd
just finished a $5 million remodeling job and now it's a jewel,
the finest hotel in the city. They, too, were overbooked, so
they apologized and gave us their owner's suite at no extra charge!"
"Well," muttered the hairdresser, "that's all well and good, but
I know you didn't get to see the Pope."
"Actually, we were quite lucky, because as we toured the Vatican,
a Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder and explained that the
Pope likes to meet a few of the visitors and if I'd be so kind as
to step into his private room and wait, the Pope would personally
greet me." Sure enough, five minutes later, the Pope walked
through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down and he spoke a
few words to me."
"Oh, really...What'd he say?"
He said, "Where'd you get that crappy hairdo?"
