1. Planting Gardens in your Belly and Backyard
==============================================

If someone says to you "go eat dirt!" they may
well mean it as a suggestion for your health.

Called "geophagy", eating dirt has been a
traditional practice which can give nutrients
to the body.

In Africa, pregnant women ate clay to consume
the minerals it contained. With slavery this
practice came to the United States and is still
in the south where family and friends send
"care packages" of good earth to expectant mothers.

I believe we all should put good bacteria in our
bellies to promote good digestion, but I can't say
I like the idea of literally "eating dirt".

A good probiotic and healthy food containing
acidophilus will "plant" and help improve the garden
that is growing in the gut (about 4 pounds of bacteria).

Adding probiotics and cultured foods can change the
population of the bacteria - fending off the bad guys
(pathogenic organisms) by bringing in the good guys
(yogurt, kefir).

I think the Life 5 product from Young Living is one of the
most superior probiotics that I have come across.
I've got to be honest, I wasn't that crazy about
YL's former probiotic product Royaldophilus, but
what we have now in Life 5 is superb.

Another Young Living product for the digestive system
that helps with eliminations (for people who are interested
in cleansing) called Comfortone has several excellent
ingredients, two being "of the earth".

Bentonite clay and diatomaceous earth are very
effective in absorbing toxins. This product has
at least 20 other ingredients that are effective in
supporting the health of the digestive system.

As far as the gardens in our backyards, you can give
your plants an excellent form of calcium that won't
cost you anything (if you already eat eggs).

Break up egg shells and sprinkle it around the base of your
plants, especially your vegetable plants.

I'm enjoying this irony. . . .
. . . .putting dirt in our bellies and food in our garden!

==========================================
2. Essential Oil Tip: Action on Microbes
==========================================

Therapeutic essential oils have an amazing ability to
get rid of pathogenic (that means bad) microbes (bacteria, etc)
and keep the normally occurring microbes.

This is different from the action of antibiotics where they
(antibiotics) often kill all the bacteria - good and bad.
This in turn leads to overgrowth of yeast (good bacteria keeps
yeast in check - when the good bacteria is not existing, yeast
can overgrow - also called candida).

3. Success Tip: H. Fred Ale
====================================

"My green thumb came only as a result of
the mistakes I made while learning to see
things from the plant's point of view."

~ H. Fred Ale

==============================================
4. Recipe of the Week: Almond Fruit Smoothie
==============================================

Almond Fruit Smoothie

1 cup orange juice
1 cup frozen peaches
1 sm peeled banana peeled, and
cut into 1" chunks and frozen
2 tbl slivered almonds, toasted

Add juice to electric blender, then add remaining ingredients.
Blend until smooth.

Add one tsp of flax oil before blending and/or add an avocado!

=========================================
5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

An old man lived alone in the country.

He wanted to dig over his tomato garden,
but it was very hard work as the ground was hard.

His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison.

The old man wrote a letter to his son and describe his
predicament:

Dear Vincent,

I am feeling pretty badly because it looks like I won't be able
to plant my Tomato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to
be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my
troubles would be over.

I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me.
Love, Dad

A few days later he received a letter from his son.

Dear Dad,
Don't dig up that garden. That's where I buried the bodies.
Love, Vinnie

At 4 a.m. The next morning, FBI agents and local police
arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies.
They apologized to the old man and left.

That same day the old man received another letter from his son!

Dear Dad,
Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do
under the circumstances.
Love, Vinnie

Thank You to Krista Hall RN, for this joke submission!

Say Good-Bye!!!

This newsletter is changing to a new format!

When I first started this newsletter in November 2005, I
struggled with my decision on which type of format to use.

There was huge controversy among the experts whether "text" was
the way to go (this is a "text" newsletter) or "html", the kind
with pretty pictures.

The argument was this:

--Go with text! it gets past the spam filters and reaches more
people (but it's not so pretty)

--Go with HTML! it has a higher "open rate" and has more impact
on your readers (but it gets caught in spam filters)

How I handled this was to go back to my original intent which was
that I wanted to reach as many people possible. So text it was.

I love graphics, so not having them has been a challenge, but I
know I have reached more people than I would have had I used
html, so I am satisfied.

But now, as with everything in the online world, things are
moving fast along and changing. There are other options that can
provide both good distribution, open rate, and be visually
appealing (you know me - I love to put my videos in there when I
can!)

So you will be seeing a new format coming up.

This is what will happen in the future:

On Wednesday morning you will receive an email from me like you
normally would when you receive the newsletter.

This email will give you the topics in the newsletter and a link
that you will click to view the whole newsletter.

If you are an AOL user you probably will have to copy and paste
that link into your address bar on your browser rather than click
on it.

I am going to be anxious to see if you like the new format and to
hear any thoughts you have on the changes!

Here is a link to a survey for you to share your thoughts and
feedback:
http://snipurl.com/newtipsformatsurvey

You can even go there now to tell me what you think about the
upcoming change!

============================================================
1. Are Pretty Toenails Possible with Fungal Nail Infections?
============================================================

YUCK.

It's an acronym for the common symptoms of nail infections, and
also how we feel when we see our nails turning on us in front of
our eyes!

Y Yellow discoloration of the nail bed
U Under the nail bed, a buildup of skin
C Cracking of the nail
K Keratinization, or thickening of the nail

Now that it is Memorial Day weekend, it is officially summer in
the fashion world and we like our feet exposed.

Wearing sandals are cooler, more comfortable, and even a little
sexier, unless what's showing are discolored, disfigured, or
cracked nails.

What can we do at home to get rid of these symptoms or prevent
them from happening?

Here is a few points about nail fungus in general. . .

If a fungus is on a toe, it's highly likely that it's present
somewhere else in the body. If you've ever had yeast
infections, athletes feet, or jock itch for example, you will be
apt to get fungal infections on the nails.

Make sure the foods that you are eating are more alkaline to
balance the body so the unwanted fungus can't take up residence.

More alkaline foods are fruits and vegetables.

Stay away from acid producing foods such as sugar, refined
carbohydrates, coffee and alcohol.

There are certain "anti-fungal" foods you can eat, such as:
--Avocado
--Broccoli
--Brussel Sprouts
--Cabbage
--Cinnamon
--Cloves
--Collards
--Lemon
--Garlic
--Kale
--Onions
--Coconut

and "anti-fungal" supplements:
--Grapefruit seed extract
--Oregano essential oil
--Ginger
--Pau d'arco herb and tea

For local application. . .
. . .sure, there are over the counter topical creams.
and often they are full of chemicals you want to stay away from.

More natural topical applications would be oils:
--therapeutic essential oils
--vitamin E oil
--castor oil
--Vicks VapoRub

Some ways to use these:

Castor Oil: "Horny" Toe Nail is a common problem especially in
the elderly. It's a toe nail that is large, angled, and difficult
to trim.
Soak feet in Epsom salts for 15 minutes every night, and then
wrap toe in a castor oil soaked gauze.
Put a sock on.

Therapeutic Essential Oils
Use one of these directly on the affected toe:
--Oregano
--Melaleuca (Tea Tree)
--Mix tea tree with lavender
--Mix tea tree with mountain savory
You can use about 5 drops of these oils.
Use directly on the site, or dilute with Vitamin E oil.

Use the Young Living Blends of Melrose, Thieves, and
Purification.

Vicks VapoRub as a remedy?
When Vicks hit the market decades ago, people were using it for
everything, including fungal nail infections.

The magic of Vicks is the eucalyptus!
Vicks has essential oils in it.
Essential oils are naturally anti-microbial and can get rid of
any unwanted microbes in their environment, including fungus.

Now Make Them Pretty

Paint them anyway. But be sure to take off your nail polish
regularly and reapply.
It gives you the opportunity to follow it's healing course.

You have to pay more attention to your toenails when you are
working on getting rid of a fungus.
Cleaning, soaks, oil applications, and regularly taking off your
polish and reapplying it will take time.

Stay with it, it's worth it.

===================================
2. Essential Oil Tip: Nail Fungus
===================================

I have heard umpteen testimonials from folks who were
fighting nail fungus and beat it with essential oils.

Those that it "didn't work for" just did not stay with
the program! You need patience but it works.

If it was me, I would use oregano directly on the nail
at least once a day - maybe twice (morning and night).
I would use just one to two drops on the affected area.

If you don't like smelling like oregano but you want to
get rid of the fungus - get over it!
It will be worth it, just tell your friends
that you got a part time job in an Italian restaurant!

Here is a 42 second video of two good essential oils choices
for nail fungus

========================================
4. Recipe of the Week: Grilled Asparagus
========================================

--1 pound asparagus
--3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
--2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
--1 tablespoon olive oil
--1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce-
--1/8 teaspoon black pepper
--Cooking spray

Directions
--Prepare grill

=========================================
5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

A Long Hot Bath

Feeling edgy, a Home Spa-er took a hot bath.

Just as she became comfortable, the doorbell rang. She got out of
the tub, put on her slippers and robe and went to the door.

A salesman was at the door. She didn't want to buy his cheap
products. Slamming the door, she returned to the bath.

The doorbell rang again. On went the slippers and robe, and she
started for the door again. She took one step, slipped on a
wet spot, fell backward, and hit her back against the hard
porcelain bathtub.

She struggled into her street clothes and drove to the doctor.

After examining her, the doctor said, "You know, you've been
lucky. Nothing is broken. But you need to relax... Why don't you
go home and take a long hot bath?"

=================================
1.Six Foods that Flatten Bellies
=================================

Oh, c'mon. .. are there really foods that flatten bellies?

I don't blame you if you are asking that question, because it
sounds preposterous!

And even more ridiculous is what these foods are called:
"Moo-Faas". Actually it is "MUFA" which is an acronym
for "mono-unsaturated fatty acids". MUFAs are also known
as the 'good fats'.

Here are six MUFAs that flatten your belly:

--Nuts and Seeds
almonds
sunflower seeds
macadamias
pistachios
walnuts

--Oils
olive
flax

--Avocado
Florida avocado
Hass avocado

--Olives
Black olives and black olive tapenade
Green olives and green olive tapenade

--Chocolate
Dark or semisweet

--Yogurt
A recent study in the International Journal of Obesity suggests
that people who get calcium from yogurt rather than other dairy
sources or supplements may lose more weight in the belly.

Learn more about the flat belly diet from Web MD:
http://snipurl.com/flat_belly_foods

As ridiculous as this sounds, to me, it makes perfect sense.

Think about when you feel bloated or puffy after eating. Most
likely the foods you ate contributed to that feeling and
experience of bloating.

Well, there are foods that do the opposite. These MUFA's are
foods that help to decrease inflammation and improve digestion
(just be careful of seeds and nuts if you are dealing with a
digestive disorder called "diverticulitis").

It is also important here to mention that everyone needs good
bacteria in the gut to help with proper digestive functioning
which helps to keep bloating at bay.

You can get good bacteria from foods like yogurt and kefir, but
probiotics are the best way to "plant" these good bacteria in the
gut.

Other great supplements to use to help with the "belly flattening
experience" are digestive enzymes. They help breakdown the foods
that the body can't break down from regular digestion.

Check out this one minute quick video:
http://snipurl.com/video_digstv_nzymes

=================================================
2. Essential Oil Tip: Essential Oils for Gas
=================================================

Technically called "flatulence", gas often accompanies
a bloated belly.

Single oils that you can use topically on the belly for
flatulence or gas are:

--Peppermint
--Nutmeg
--Fennel

Another good choice to deal with bloating or gas is
the essential oil blend designed to balance the digestive
system called Di-Gize. Rub topically on belly.

3. Success Tip: William Shakespeare

==============================================
4.Recipe of the Week: Almond Fruit Smoothie
==============================================

Almond Fruit Smoothie

1 cup orange juice
1 cup frozen peaches
1 sm peeled banana peeled, and
cut into 1" chunks and frozen
2 tbl slivered almonds, toasted

Add juice to electric blender, then add remaining ingredients.
Blend until smooth.

Add one tsp of flax oil before blending and/or add an avocado!

=========================================
5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair
for patients being discharged. However,
while working as a student nurse, I found one
elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting
on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who
insisted he didn't need my help to leave the
hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly
let me wheel him to the elevator.

On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.

"I don't know," he said. "She's still upstairs
in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown."

1.What Moms Really Want
=========================

Hallmark, as you can imagine, does tons of research on this
topic. They found what mothers love to receive from their
husbands and children are things she wants but won't purchase
for herself.

Here's a list of Hallmark's findings on what mothers want along
with other great gift ideas:

--Anything made, or selected, by their child or grandchild.

--A day of no chores or cooking.

--Time spent with the kids (if they no longer live in the home).

--Something she mentioned in passing, and they remembered (shows
they were really listening).

--Pampering (waiting on her, massage, spa day).

--A Mother's Day card she will keep forever(Hallmark, of course!)

--Sleep

--The best of everything for her family

--No dishes in the sink

--More time for family relationships

--Being told how much she's appreciated

--A gift with emotional or sentimental value

Moms told Hallmark researchers that they especially don't want
to have to tell their husbands and/or children what they want;
rather, they want them to figure it out.

Gift giving for Moms or Grandmoms can be made easy if you can
figure out what kind of woman she is according to a fun website
gifts.com

Here are some of the categories:

--Achiever

--Adventurer

--Country Clubber

--Domestic Diva

--Hipster

--Super Mom

--Thinker

--Natural Woman

--Trendenista

--Urban Sophisticate

Pick the woman, then pick the gift! (These are great gift ideas
even beyond Mothers Day.)

Check out these ideas: http://snipurl.com/pick_your_mom_type

2. Essential Oil Tip: Gift Ideas for Mothers Day
=================================================

--Sensation Essential Oil Blend (ylang ylang, jasmine, rosewood)

--Sensation Hand and Body Lotion (Sensation oils combined with
MSM and other antioxidant vitamins and botanicals)

--Sensation Bath Gel

--ART Skin Care System - Age Refining Technology - Frankincense
and Sandalwood are added to this unique formula to revitalize the
surface of the skin and restore a firm, healthy-looking
complexion.

4.Recipe of the Week: The Perfect Cup of Tea
==============================================

5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

A Mother's Love ~ Helen Steiner Rice

A Mother's love is something
that no on can explain,
It is made of deep devotion
and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish
and enduring come what may
For nothing can destroy it
or take that love away . . .
It is patient and forgiving
when all others are forsaking,
And it never fails or falters
even though the heart is breaking . . .
It believes beyond believing
when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty
of the rarest, brightest gems . . .
It is far beyond defining,
it defies all explanation,
And it still remains a secret
like the mysteries of creation . . .
A many splendoured miracle
man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence
of God's tender guiding hand.

1. Cleanse Without Fasting
===========================
(Video below - 1 min 49 sec)

Fasting is not for everyone who wants to cleanse, for a variety
of reasons:

--They don't want to go through that 3 day funk
--It's too difficult to run a family and cook for others
--The initial low blood sugar crashes are too inconvenient
--The readjustment in eliminations are too uncomfortable
--They can't afford to loose stamina at work
--There is no support system in place

This is not to say that fasting isn't beneficial, I think it's
great and it has some awesome benefits for health and beauty.

But I would rather eat and cleanse, than not eat and cleanse.

I attended a two week intensive cleansing retreat last March in
Southern California where we alternated raw foods for 4 days with
3 days of juicing fasting. I lost so much weight that I really
didn't want to loose (10 pounds in the first 3 days) and when I
got home I ended up eating more food than I normally eat, and
gained all the weight back plus more. I think my body went into a
starvation mode and my metabolism stepped down a few notches.

So, from that experience I decided to delegate part of my daily
intake to substances and foods that will continuously cleanse my
body.

Now, if I were to tell you there was something we could eat every
day that will help take toxins out of your body, would you be
interested in finding out what that was?

First, let me describe to you its features:

--It was used by the Egyptians for cleansing
--When we eat it, it doesn't get digested
--It's not absorbed into the bloodstream
--It absorbs water and swells up
--It becomes like a gel that also absorbs toxins
--It slows down absorption of sugar so it keeps blood sugar down
--As it moves through your intestines, it 'scrubs' the walls of
your intestinal tract
--It makes you feel full so you can even lose weight
--It also reduces cholesterol

What is it?
Soluble fiber.

What foods consist of soluble fiber?
Oats and oat bran, nuts, barley, flax, oranges, apples, and
carrots to name a few.

But one of the best things you can take as pure soluble fiber for
the mere purpose of a good cleanse is psyllium. Psyllium is a
fibrous seed and often made in the form of a powder for
cleansing.

Do you know that psyllium was used in ancient Egypt and was
described in the Ebers Papyrus (medical documents of 1500 BC)? It
was used for its laxative and antidiarrheal properties. What does
that tell you? It tells you that it can have both effects, so
therefore it is "balancing".

Other early Old World uses of psyllium seeds were to treat sores
of the mouth and throat, stop nosebleeds, treat complications of
the liver, and help to fix loose teeth. Psyllium was administered
to assuage complications from scurvy and worms.

The plant itself is 'plantago' and other parts of the plant are
known to be medicinal as well. Native Americans and Aztecs used
plantago husks and leaves as cough remedies, for wounds, insect
bites, and headaches.

Where do we get psyllium?
Many cleansing products on the market contain psyllium. One of
the most popular products found on grocery store shelves is Metamucil
- but that has other stuff in it including lots of sugar.

Here are two sources for a more natural and healthy psyllium
product:

--Trader Joes Store (if you are lucky enough to have one near
you) has a product of pure psyllium call Secrets of the Psyllium.

--Young Living has a product called ICP Multiple Fiber Beverage
along with oat bran, aloe, flax and fennel, and some other things
including essential oils that are good for the digestive system.

One very important thing to remember when you take psyllium:
Drink Water!

2. Essential Oil Tip: Lemon
============================
(Video - 1 min)

The essential oil of lemon is probably one of the most
under rated essential oils. There are so many wonderful
things that lemon essential oil can do for our health.

One is cleansing.

Simply put a drop of therapeutic grade lemon essential oil
in a glass of water (note I said glass!) and drink it throughout
the day.

It alkalinizes and cleans up the body!

3. Success Tip: Robin Williams
===============================

Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's party!"
~ Robin Williams

==========================================
4.Recipe of the Week: Creamy Asparagus Soup
==========================================

2 lbs asparagus
1 large yellow onion, chopped
3 Tbsp unsalted butter
5 cups chicken broth
2 sprigs of fresh thyme (leaves only)
1/3 cup heavy cream
1 Tbsp dry vermouth
A squeeze of fresh lemon juice
Salt and pepper

--Cut tips from 12 asparagus 1 1/2 inches from top and halve
lengthwise if thick (Reserve for garnish - cut stalks and all
remaining asparagus into 1/2-inch pieces)

--Cook onion in butter in a 4 or 6-quart heavy pot over
moderately low heat, stirring, until softened.

--Add asparagus pieces and salt and pepper to taste, then cook,
stirring, 5 minutes.

--Add 5 cups broth, thyme, and simmer, covered, until asparagus
is very tender, 15 to 20 minutes.

--While soup simmers, cook reserved asparagus tips in boiling
salted water until just tender, 3 to 4 minutes, then drain.

--Purée soup in batches in a blender until smooth.

--Transfer to a bowl (use caution when blending hot liquids), and
return to pan

--Stir in cream

--Stir in vermouth and a squeeze of lemon juice

--Season with salt and pepper

--Garnish with asparagus tips

5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

An 85-year-old couple, after being married for almost 60
years, died in a car crash.

They had been in good health the last ten years, mainly due to
her interest in health food and exercising.

When they reached the Pearly Gates, St. Peter took them to their
mansion, which was decked out with a beautiful kitchen,
masterbath suite, and a Jacuzzi.

As they looked around, the old man asked St. Peter how much all
this was going to cost. "It's free," St. Peter replied, "this is
Heaven."

Next, they went out in the back yard to survey the championship-
style golf course where the home was located.
They would have golfing privileges every day. Each week, the
course changed to a new one, representing the great golf courses
on earth.

The old man asked, "What are the green fees?" St. Peter replied,
"This is heaven, you play for free."

Next, they went to the club house and saw the lavish buffet lunch
with the Cuisine of the World laid out.

"How much to eat?" asked the old man. "Don't you understand yet?
This is heaven, it is free!" St. Peter replied, with some
exasperation. "Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol
tables?" the old man asked timidly.

St. Peter lectured, "That's the best part - you can eat as much
as you like of whatever you like, and you never get fat and you
never get sick. This is Heaven."

With that, the old man went into a fit of anger, throwing down
his hat, stomping on it, and screaming wildly.

St. Peter and his wife both tried to calm him down, asking him
what was wrong.

The old man looked at his wife and said, "This is all your
fault! If it weren't for your blasted bran muffins, I could have
been here ten years ago!"
