Why the Belly of the Pumpkin is So Good For You!

Pumpkin Seeds - or Cucurbita Seeds are full of nutrients! . . .

. . . such as protein, fiber, iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorous, as well as the amino acids arginine and glutamic acid. They also contain calcium, potassium, zinc, selenium, folate, and niacin. And they are also a source of linolenic acid (which is believed to help prevent hardening of the arteries).

Here are some of the things that munching on a small handful of seeds can help with:

  • Calm an irritated and overactive bladder occasionally associated with bedwetting (Germany’s Commission E has approved using pumpkin seeds for bedwetting and other
    bladder problems)

  • Get rid of intestinal parasites (the ingredient cucurbitin in the seeds is believed to paralyze
the worms over time forcing them to lose their grip and get expelled from the body)

  • Help with symptoms of prostate enlargement (the use of these seeds for this problem is traced back to Native American healers). A clinical trial done using pumpkin seeds for BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy) showed improvements in symptoms such as post-void dribbling, weak urine flow, and time spent urinating in many of the participants. Fifty-three men with BPH took part in this three-month, double-blind study completed in 1990.

You can get nutrients and benefits from pumpkin seeds in many forms, such as:
  • The seed itself

  • Pumpkin seed oil

  • Dried herb

  • Tea

You can buy the seeds in health food stores either in the shell or already shelled. And you can get them raw or roasted.

The oil is wonderful, we get ours from Donna Gates (author "Body Ecology Diet"). Like most oils, it goes rancid so you do need to keep it refrigerated.

Here’s a great recipe for getting rid of those parasites and worms:
  • Make an emulsion by grinding up the seeds, mixing them with some sugar (or honey) and some milk (or water)

  • Sip this mixture in three daily doses, ingesting a total of about 2 ounces of the emulsion.

  • Alternatively, make a tea with the ground seeds by infusing them in hot water; allow the brew to cool slightly before straining and sipping. Don’t take more than 16 ounces at one time.

Here's a tip for for men who are interested in good prostate health
  • preventing enlargement, or even helping your treatment along: chew a handful of these seeds every day!

Make them in an easy and delicious way at home - from your own pumpkins! Harvest the seeds yourself from your fresh pumpkins or other squash as well. You then roast them slowly on an oiled baking sheet in a 250 degree oven until crisp.

China Doll

  • White and Red Face Makeup

  • Thong Slippers

  • Kimono Dress

Paintface white and add red rosy cheeks shaped in a circle. Put hair in buns, wearthong slippers and the kimono (Chinese dress).

Frazzled Housewife

Put a TV Guide and a remote in your pocket, carry a crusty spatula, optional cigarette hanging out of mouth, use brown eye shadow under your eyes to make bags.

Instant Old

  • Apply base make-up all over face and neck.

  • "Scrunch" up your face first to emphasize
your "natural" wrinkles, and apply make-up that is lighter than your natural skin-tone (work on a small a great a time for best results). Then "de-scrunch" and fill in the creases using a soft brown eye-liner pencil.

  • Create sunken cheeks by darkening the cheek hollows. Emphasize the creases around your nose, and darken along your jaw line.

  • Create crows feet by your eyes.

  • Pucker up your lips to create wrinkles around your mouth.

  • Add liver spots, broken capillaries, etc.

Blend everything with a make-up sponge. If you use make-up with a small amount of yellow added, you'll get a more realistic look. Use the same techniques on your hands for more realism. When you are all done, power allover with baby powder to set make-up and give a dry skin appearance. You can also use baby powder to make your hair look gray.

Stop Sinus Problems Before They Start

Fall is a time of year when sinus-y stuff starts to happen.

Many people attribute sinus problems to the spring, but fall is also a major time of difficulty for sinus sufferers.

Here are some reasons why:

  • Mold produced by leaf decay

  • Potent weed allergens

  • Decay from bug death

  • Heating systems coming on

  • Less fresh air in households

  • Cooler weather makes us crave sweets and
carbs (eating them can affect our sinuses too)

It is true that our external environment has a huge role to play in attributing to sinus problems, but our internal environment

(inside our bodies) has more of an influence on sinus conditions than the outside of our body.

If our internal environment is in "good shape", then it can help combat what we are exposed to externally.

What constitutes "good shape"?

  • Balanced ecology in the gut (decent population of good bacteria with little yeast overgrowth)

  • More alkaline and less acid (eating veggies and fruits and not sugar, caffeine, white flour)

  • Well hydrated

  • Well rested

  • Well oxygenated (daily exercise)

  • Well cleansed (bowels moving)

Why is balanced ecologyin the gut such an important factor as it relates to sinus health?

The entire alimentary canal (the gastrointestinal system starting with the mouth and ending with the anus) is made up of mucous membrane. We often call the abdominal portion of the gastrointestinal system "the gut".

When the gut has a good ecological terrain of balanced flora it can influence the other areas of the body that have the same mucous membrane tissue.

Think about where else mucous membrane is in the body:

Respiratory System

  • sinuses

  • mouth

  • nose

  • windpipe and lungs

Urogential System

  • vagina

  • urethra

  • urinary bladder

These areas are often affected by candida or yeast overgrowth, which can lead to symptoms which are often called 'infections' (many times they are infections, but many times they are just an overgrowth of yeast).

In the years of my practice, I saw many people with sinus conditions. This condition was often accompanied by other problems in the body - such as allergies, skin disorders, frequent headaches, depression, stomach problems, and colon issues to name a few.

Many of these people loved and often ate these foods:

  • Cheeses, especially aged

  • Wine

  • Sugar

  • Mushrooms

  • Bread
    made with yeast

  • Food with preservatives (packaged food)

  • Cakes, pastries, cookies

  • Pizza

  • Acid forming beverages: coffee, tea, soda

And very often these folks were constipated.

Along with eating an balanced alkaline diet, here are two very effective ways to deal with sinus
issues:

  • Colon cleansing

Cleansing the colon can keep the overgrowth of candida at bay. Sinus conditions clear up when the colon is clear.

As a former Wellness Center owner, I used to observe that when people had colonics with good results, they almost always simultaneously experienced sinus drainage. Any sinus congestion they had before their cleansing often disappeared with the good results of the cleanse.

Nutritional products that you can use at home for cleansing, and even foods that help cleanse the body, can offer the same results as it relates to sinuses.

  • Using therapeutic grade essential oils

This is a no brainer.

If you understand how therapeutic essential oils create an environment where overgrowth or imbalance of micro-organisms can NOT take place - in other words the overgrowth of yeast, fungus, and any pathogenic organisms will not occur, then you can see why using these for sinus problems can be very helpful.

Many microbes, especially the ones that don't serve us, love to hang out in dark moist environments -and that is exactly what our sinus cavities are (note how they are called 'cavities') -a dark moist environment.

Inhalation, diffusing, and even taking essential oils internally can be extremely helpful for sinus sufferers. If you want to take them internally, make sure the label has "Supplemental Facts" on it (overseen by the FDA) - this way you know you can take them internally. You may be hard pressed to find that on labels in essential oils, but you will find it in Young Living oils - that is one of the many reasons I love Young Living.

Cleaning for the Cleaning Lady

Do you ever find yourself cleaning for the cleaning lady?

I do it all the time. And I remember teasing my mother when she would clean before Isabella, her sweet little cleaning lady, would come - and now I'm doing the same thing! I always thought Mom did it as an image thing - so that she didn't appear to be so messy.

I do it mostly for organizational reasons. I want to make sure my things are in their proper place so that they're not just put into piles for me to go through later - doubling the amount of work I must do. But I do clean as I organize to save my lady some steps herself. To some that may seem ridiculous.

If your cleaning person uses conventional toxic products for cleaning your house........here are some ways to clear your environment after those petrochemical based household products have been used:

  • Open the window and doors (tough if the weather is cold)

  • Run ceiling fans

  • Diffuse therapeutic essential oils - they naturally destroy petrochemicals (try putting a drop of lemon oil on a Styrofoam cup to see how this works)

  • Put a drop of therapeutic essential oil on your kitchen counter and bathroom sink area and wipe (orange or pine are good to use)

  • Sprinkle a few drops of therapeutic essential oil in your bathtub and run the shower for a few minutes

If you do take the time to educate your cleaners on the use of non-toxic ways to clean your household, here are some suggestions to give them:

  • To clean mirrors and windows: mix 1/4 c. white vinegar with 2 c. water and 1/2 tsp liquid soap - use in spray bottle

  • If you want a natural abrasive for cleaning tubs, showers, and sinks: use Borax and mix with dish washing soap - add a few drops of lemon or pine essential oil

  • Use Thieves Household Cleaner by Young Living Essential Oils. Thieves Cleaner is a proprietary suspension of safe surfactants (wetting agents) and Thieves essential oil blend. Thieves Household Cleaner is highly concentrated - here are the ratios to mix with water for these jobs:

    • Light Degreasing 60:1

    • Medium Degreasing 30:1

    • Heavy Degreasing 15:1

    • Floors 100:1

    • Walls 30:1

    • Upholstery, Fabrics, Carpet Spotting
      40:1

    • Carpet 100:1

    • Glass 320:1

    • Pots and Pans 100:1

    • Hand Cleaner 1:1

In our homes we have a choice who to bring in and which products they use. Finding and educating a service about using natural cleaners may be tough but worth it. We don't have a choice as to who cleans our rooms nor which products are used when we stay in a hotel.

Here are some tips on how to minimize exposure to toxic cleaners in your hotel rooms:

  • Don't let the maid clean your room every day - just get your towels replaced and trash emptied, and make your own bed

  • Place a hand towel sprinkled with your favorite therapeutic essential oils in the vents of the heat/ac system and turn on the fan

  • Run a steam shower and dowse a few drops of lavender into the water streams
