Natural Deodorants You Never Heard Of! / June 23, 2010

Natural Deodorants
You Never Heard Of!

Almost every antiperspirant on the market contains aluminum. Aluminum is a heavy metal and can stress the body. The body doesn't have a mechanism to easily rid itself of metals. It'sWhy burden part of the excretory system with a heavy metal when there are natural alternatives that are often less expensive?

Here are some:

  • Baking soda - Keep a box at your bathroom sink and sprinkle on your palm
and apply it under your arm like a powder
  • Corn Starch - Keep a box at your bathroom sink and apply under your arm
  • Vinegar - Dilute white vinegar with water and splash under arm
  • Essential Oils Lavender, melaleuca (tea-tree), rosemary, thyme. Use only
therapeutic-grade. Splash a few drops under your arm.

  • Combine baking soda, cornstarch, and your favorite essential oil in a container and use under your arm
  • Natural Toothpaste - Most natural toothpastes have baking soda, salts, and essential oils. (Don't use Tom's, it has propylene glycol). Put a dab on your finger and rub under your armpit. Just know the toothpastes with mint will be a bit more refreshing! The mint sensation will last just a few minutes.

It's best that you don't apply anything immediately after shaving. Commercially, a good alternative is crystal stone deodorants. It you are feeling industrious and want to make your own solid deodorant at home, here's a recipe:

1 1/2 tbs. beeswax (yellow is best)
1/2 Tbs. cocoa butter
1 tablespoon coconut oil
15 drops thyme essential oil
15 drops rosemary essential oil
25 drops lavender essential oil
3 drops castor oil

Melt beeswax in a glass jar standing in hot water, add the cocoa butter, and when it has melted, add the oils. Stir to mix thoroughly, then pour into a clean, empty deodorant stick case and leave to cool and set.

12 Top Reasons to Eat Watermelon / June 16, 2010

12 Top Reasons to Eat Watermelon

Sweet treats in the summertime... yummm... especially when these treats are cold and refreshing!

The classic image of going out for ice cream on a hot summer eve can be so appealing, but remains that, an image - at least for those of us who make food choices that don't include refined sugar.

The very best way to satisfy that hankering for a cold and refreshing sweet treat in the summer is with a juicy watermelon. (A one-cup serving of this healthy, delicious snack is only about forty eight calories!)

And satisfying our "summertime sweet tooth" is not the only reason to eat watermelon
- here are twelve other very important health reasons to eat this delicious
fruit...

  1. Provides additional water to the body (watermelon is about 92% water!)

  2. Good for bad breath

  3. Serves as a hangover remedy

  4. Can improve sore throat and mouth sores

  5. Cleanses the kidneys (juice the entire watermelon
    - rind, seeds, and all and drink for a good kidney cleanse)

  6. Naturally gets rid of excess fluid in the
body - it has diuretic properties

  7. Liver supportive - contains glutathione

  8. Cleanses blood and strengthens glands -
    contains chlorophyll

  9. It is a good source of potassium

  10. Fat free - low in calories, high in energy

  11. Nutrients in watermelon include vitamin A, vitamin B6, and vitamin C (it also contains fiber and has no fat or cholesterol!)

  12. Helps lower the risk of heart disease: watermelon has the highest amount of lycopenes in fruits and veggies according to the USDA Caratenoid.

12 Ways to 'Spa' at Work / June 9, 2010

12 Ways to 'Spa' at Work

Mini-spa experiences throughout your work day can rejuvenate
and refresh you...... so you can........

~Be More Productive
~Have Greater Mental Clarity
~Be Less Stressed
~Look Better
~Feel Better

You can do many easy things in your office environment to give you powerful rejuvenating opportunities.

Here are some tips for either your home or corporate office:

1. Create a 5 minute "mini-steam" right at your desk.

This can open your sinuses, your pores, your mind and give you a much needed highly rejuvenating break in your workday. Pour hot water in a cup.

Put 2 - 3 drops of an essential oil such as eucalyptus, lavender, or peppermint in the cup.

Put your face over the cup and take a large file folder capping over your head to create an enclosed environment (just tell your co-workers that you are having a private session with the little men who make your tea - they will REALLY leave you alone!)

Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.

Write on the outside of the file folder in black marker "Taking a 5 minute spa break - Do Not Disturb!".

2. Give yourself a 2 minute acupressure session with points on your face.

Some people call this a non-surgical face lift.

This uses the Asian principles of opening up the channels of energy or "chi". It can give you an instant uplift, alleviate a headache, clear mental fog, and bring a glow to your face.

Using both hands with the pads of your first 2 fingers press firmly all over both sides of the face.

3. Take a 4 minute fantasy vacation.

Close your eyes, put your feet up on your desk, take a deep breath and picture your favorite vacation spot. See yourself there feeling good and having a great time.

The unconscious mind doesn't know the difference between a real or imagined event. Your body will thank you!

4. Rap over a wrap.

Have a spa cuisine lunch with a good friend. Sandwich wraps filled with veggies and protein are a good healthy lunch. Combine that with a "heart to heart" conversation for great stress reduction.

5. Give yourself self-administered foot reflexology sessions right at your desk.

Keep a foot roller at your feet to roll your feet on (shoes off) during the day. This can stimulate reflex points on your feet that can relax and invigorate your entire body.

Along with foot rollers, you can also use a golf ball, racquetball, or tennis ball.

Don't forget to keep a pair of comfy slippers under your desk for times you just need to relax your feet.

6. Share a healing touch with an office mate.

Exchange a nice shoulder rub with each other to relax those "computer tight" shoulder and neck muscles.

7. Walk outside.

Take a 10-minute nature break - and that doesn't mean the rest room! A stroll outside in nature can do wonders for you.

8. Surround yourself with green.

Have a voluptuous jade plant on your desk near your computer. Not only does the shiny green color relax you, but the jade plant helps to absorb electromagnetic frequencies that come off of your computer screen.

In fact, many common houseplants detoxify the environment. Keep several types of plants nearby in your workspace. Peace lilies, spider plants, and English Ivy are all good plants to use.

9. Relax by gazing at your desktop pet fish.

Fish are fun and relaxing to look at. A pretty and low maintenance fish to have on your desk is the Beta fish. It doesn't need a filtered aquarium to live in and lives on just a few pellets of food a day.

10. Snack healthy.

Keep snacks in your desk drawer to keep your blood sugar levels stable, especially during stressful days and days you skip meals.

Mixed nuts, trail mix or healthy protein bars are good to have on hand. Ningxia Red juice packets for on the go are a great healthy energy boost (from Young Living).

11. Play light music.

Music soothes the soul - and our souls often need soothing especially when we are stressed at work
with issues and deadlines. Have your iPod or MP3 player with some of your favorite relaxing tunes on it playing lightly in the background.

12. Google your concerns.

If your mind is distracted from work because of certain life issues like relationship problems, health
challenges, or family concerns, then google a phrase that best describes your concern and read about it - such as "single again at 50", "empty nest syndrome", "midlife crises", etc.

Essential Oil Gift Ideas For Summertime Guests / June 2, 2010

Essential Oil Gift Ideas For Summertime Guests

Next week my family from the West Coast is coming for a visit and I am thrilled.

I always like to have little welcome gifts when people visit me - something practical for them to use while they are here and something they can use at home.

The three kids (all under age 12) are getting personalized bags that I ordered from Lillian Vernon so they can easily schlep their stuff between family homes here in New Jersey.

And for the adults I thought I would make them each a Signature Essential Oils Spritz with their names on the bottle. It will be at thier bedside in my guest rooms, and they can take it with them on their visit to the Jersey Shore - and then home if it lasts!

Kristen is a Geranium Gal...

David is a Man of Valor...

Here is how I'm making these Signature Spritz's...(I'm calling them "Body Spray's" so they know they can spray all over their body - and these are great in the summer time!):

Body Spray Recipe

  • A small mister bottle

  • 4 drops of essential oils

    (Geranium for Kristen)

  • 4 oz of distilled water

    • Just fill the mister bottle starting
with 4 drops of essential oils.

    • Add water

    • Shake well before use

For David - I think he'll want to use this as an aftershave so I'll use some refreshing witch hazel in his spritz:

Aftershave Recipe

  • 1 tablespoon witch hazel

  • 4 drops of essential oils

    (Valor for David)

  • 6 oz. of distilled water
