Under Your Toes~Organic Lawns, Safe Beaches / July 28th, 2010
Organic Lawns, Safe Beaches
I love going barefoot, especially in the summer. Summertime is an invitation for all of us to connect our uncovered feet with our favorite terrain.
Whether it's using our toes to pull up blades of grass or wiggling our feet in sandy beaches - there is a pleasurable, intimate, and healthy connection that we make with the earth. . . unless it's tainted with unhealthy bacteria or chemicals.
It is not easy to know where to safely put our bare feet, except in our own controlled environment like our back yards.
Public places are especially difficult to know unless they have the good sense to let people know if the area has been treated with something or if the area is unsafe.
Beaches can have high levels of undesirable bacteria (usually e.coli) and we might not know it until the municipality closes it down. Water can be unsafe for swimming and unnatural bacteria can affect the shoreline and the sand.
Many lawns and public grassy areas can be loaded with chemicals to kill weeds and make the grass grow greener and thicker. Sometimes we are forewarned with little white flags bearing the universal NO symbol over icons of pets and children. In other words - "the chemicals placed on the lawn are harmful".
I am much more aware of this now that I have my dog Prin whom I walk in neighborhoods and parks. I appreciate those little white flags because I know when to stay away. I love seeing grassy areas that have weeds and clover where I know I can safely let Prin and my bared feet run loose. I've been reading about organic lawn care. Although I have a natural lawn care service that is pesticide and chemical free, I know from my experience with essential oils and eating cultured foods that there are a variety
of ways that we can "let nature take care of nature".
At the Young Living Farms out in Mona, Utah, where acres and acres of organic farming abound, we can witness goats eating weeds. There is a secret recipe of essential oils specifically for killing bugs and weeds which is called the "ho, ho, ho" formula. If any of you HSL readers out there who are YL fanatics like me know what is in this formula - please email me. I actually don't think it is a secret recipe - I believe YL would be very open to sharing this - but for some reason it has picked up that reputation.
Now most of us aren't about to go out and buy goats, but we might consider composting (compost is a mixture of varying decaying organic substances used for fertilizing soil. Organic landscapers and professional lawn care companies who are using natural mixtures of compost teas and potions of good bacteria are "sprouting up" in various areas.
A 2004 survey from the National Gardening Association showed that 5% of us are using organic means for fertilizers, and weed and insect control. They expect that number to double to 10% by 2009.
Tips for organic lawn care:
- Let your grass grow higher (3 " blades)
- Twice a year mow low (2 ")
- Leave grass clippings on lawn
- Water between 12:00 midnight and 8 AM every few days
Weed Control:
- Over-seed the lawn in the spring
- Pull weeds by hand, or use a fish-tail weeder
- Spot-treat weeds with an equal mix of vinegar and water
- Re-seed bare areas where weeds have been pulled.
- Attract or purchase natural enemies:
- Lure birds with sunflowers and zinnias
- Buy ladybugs at a garden supply store
- Get a toad for your garden
- Lure birds with sunflowers and zinnias
Tips to help keep our beaches clean:
- Report pollution sources
- Be a responsible beachgoer - bring trash bags
- Don't feed the birds or other animals
- Don't empty waste in water if boating

Cooling Your Body and Abode Naturally / July 21, 2010

Cooling Your Body
and Abode Naturally
Now is the time when air conditioners are kicking on and body thermostats are adjusting, and we have to deal with the "side effects" of these circumstances like...
- Mold spores flying around when the a/c kicks on the first of the season
- Higher utility bills
- Tons of carbon dioxide dumping into the environments
- Our body's hard work to regulate its temperature
- Trying to decide how we feel about the heat ~ ("good to sweat", "I don't want to sweat", "I wonder why I don't sweat")
Here are some natural tips for cheap and effective cooling that handles the side effects and keeps us green!:
- Cook with a pressure cooker (of course I would never say microwave but that is cooler)
- I just got my old pressure cooker out (from when I cooked macrobiotically years ago) and started to use it. I'm amazed at how fast, moist, and delicious the food is cooked this way!
- Line dry clothes
- Great benefit of nature's fabric softener - the air
- Air dry dishes
- I'm going to follow my own advice here and will probably pick up one of those wooden dish drying racks at IKEA - I notice my dishwasher throws off so much heat!
- Use washer and dryer early in the day or late in the evening
- Use ceiling fans
- They use less than 1/10th the wattage of air conditioners
- Use ceiling fans in conjunction with air conditioning
- Use roof vents
- These are so inexpensive, like $10
Here is how to install them ~ http://snipurl.com/install_roof_vents - Ventilate with a window fan - A good old fashion inexpensive way to cool
More for your environment...
Diffuse essential oils in the house when the air conditioner comes on for the first time - this will cut down on the mold spores that may circulate (I like Purification mixed with either Orange or Lemon)
And for our body...
- Stay well hydrated - with water
- Wear lightweight cotton clothing
- Eat light
- Get those hormonal levels adjusted, sweating can be profuse when the hormones are out of whack
(Endoflex essential oil is great for balancing the endocrine system)
- Put a dab of peppermint behind your neck for a cooling effect (if the neck area happens to get hot from applying the peppermint oil on sweaty skin-put some olive oil on it or a plain base massage oil to take the heat out, don't use water)

The Skinny on Weight Loss / July 14, 2010

The Skinny on Weight Loss
I had a teacher in my early twenties that taught me the most valuable lesson I've ever learned. She said, "The truth about most things in life is usually the opposite of what you have been taught."
Well, the idea of the "fat-free" diet for weight loss is one of those things. Contrary to what we've been told for years, consuming fat can actually help you lose weight, as long as they are good fats.In my desire to keep this huge topic brief and empower you to use this info immediately, I am picking one delicious good-fat food to tell you about that you should be adding to your diet immediately. Coconuts.
Coconut milk, coconut water, coconut cream and other natural coconut constituents should be consumed daily for weight loss. Now, this doesn't mean you have to go buy one of those brown hairy round balls that sit next to the bananas in your Acme and sledgehammer it open when you get home. The Whole Foods industry is on the same page here, so most health food stores now carry cans of coconut milk.
How does eating coconut help you lose weight? It's the medium chain fatty acids in the coconut oil. Medium chain fatty acids (MCTs) are used in the body for energy, as opposed to long chained fatty acids ((LDTs) from vegetable oils, that are stored as fat. Medium chain fatty acids create "thermogenesis" in the body which increases metabolism and burns energy.
One way to get the "skinny" on how coconut oil creates weight loss is by looking at how it affects animals when given in their feed. The animal feed industry has known about this for years.
The livestock industry always liked fat pigs for good taste, and fed them foods to fatten them up. When lard was a household staple, feeding pigs polyunsaturated fats, like soybean and corn oil before slaughter fattened these guys up. These fats are long chained fatty acids. Today, now that 'thin is in' and low fat meats are more desirable, there's a way to feed the pigs to keep them lean. According to the Department of Animal Science of North Carolina State University, feeding pigs the good fats (saturated) such as coconut oil, helps produce lean pigs. (No suggestion in eating pork here - just an example.)
You can buy coconut milk at health food stores, but if you want it fairly inexpensively, try your Asian markets. Make sure you are getting pure coconut milk without sugar or any additives. In the health food stores, the cost of a can runs about $1.79. In the Asian markets, it's about 79 cents.
You can make the most delicious shakes with coconut milk. This would also be a good choice if you want low sugar non-dairy milks. Rice and almond milks are high glycemics, and soymilk is not the best choice either.
Here is a fabulous recipe for a most delicious shake - and you can use your therapeutic grade essential oil of orange to flavor it up:
The Creamy Dreamsicle: The Weight Loser's Dream
- 3 oz coconut milk
- 6 oz water
- 2 scoops of whey protein (or other protein
powder) - 4 ice cubes
- 2 drops of orange essential oil
- Blend in blender
Option - you can add ground flax to this, or flax oil

How To Make Your Skin Sparkle this Summer / July 7, 2010
How to Make Your Skin Sparkle this Summer
Skin, hidden for months under winter clothing, officially becomes exposed in summer.
A great way to prepare the skin for this annual unveiling is with a body scrub.
Body scrubs make your skin sparkly clean. They help exfoliate the dead skin cells and allow fresh new skin cells to surface. New skin cells have a vibrant glow compared to dead cells.
There are tons of commercial scrubs available, but why bother to shop? It's so easy to whip up your own scrub from what's in your kitchen cabinets already.
Marilee's Easy Scrub:
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1/2 cup fine sea salt
- 10 drops of Lavender Essential
Oil (or another favorite essential oil) - Mix together and place in clean jar
- Use this after you bathe or shower (but
stay in tub/shower to rinse off) - Place small amount in your hand
- Gently scrub in circular motion on skin
- Scrub entire body. Be gentle on, or
avoid, sensitive areas - Be careful stepping out of tub/shower; it
may be extra-slippery from oil - Pat dry with bath towel
Not only will this mini massage trigger the body's natural healing process by stimulating the flow of blood and lymph fluid, the aromas also act upon the emotional center in the brain which governs the way we feel. As the oils evaporate they are inhaled, thus entering the body via the millions of sensitive cells that line the nasal passages. These send messages straight to the brain, and affect the emotions by working on the limbic system, which also controls the major functions of the body. So, by scrubbing your body you are also creating an aromatherapy treatment. Thus, the essential oils are able to enhance both your physical and psychological well being at the same time.
Each oil has a distinct chemical composition, which determines its fragrance and determines the ways in which it affects your body giving each oil its unique set of beneficial properties. Lavender comes from the word “lavare" meaning to wash. It was one of the most favored oils used by the Romans in their daily bathing rituals. It helps balance your emotions.
