1. Happy Anniversary Home Spa Lady Tips of the Week!====================================================
This is our Anniversary Issue! We are One Year Old! or Young - however you want to look at it.

Home Spa Lady enters her 52nd week of sharing great tips on natural health and beauty and ways you can make every day a spa day! It is fitting for this to take place in the week of Thanksgiving because gratitude is already "in the air". I am so grateful to have gained the knowledge, experience, and resources so that I can bring you the best of research-based (even if the testing has only been done in my kitchen!) common-sense therapies, remedies, recipes, and information to help keep you empowered in your health and life. My vision for the next year is to increase subscribers by the thousands. Higher visibility of this newsletter is already taking place as Home Spa Lady is aligning with other websites that have a similar purpose.

You too can help reach that goal by sending emails with the http://www.HomeSpaLady.com link or copies of these newsletters to your friends who would be interested in receiving them.

Don't forget that all issues of these newsletters are archived at http://www.homespaladytips.blogspot.com.

I want you to know I LOVE to hear from you, so please write any time you feel so inclined to do so. And please help me reach my goal of 10,000 subscribers by next year at this time.

2. How To Eat Mindfully at Thanksgiving Dinner
===============================================
How we approach eating our Thanksgiving meal is a mindset. Whether its "meat" or "vegetarian", "sweets" or "no sweets", "permission we give ourselves to pig out" because it is a special occasion or "staying with our program", we are making these decisions in our mind now as we carry out the activities towards the Thanksgiving feast. Some of us are traveling to our dinners and some of us are staying home, shopping and preparing for this holiday. And some are even rebelling. Either way we are conjuring up in our mind show our holiday dinner is going to look and if we are going to let loose and be mindless or stay in control and be mindful.

If you want to stay mindful and not work so hard at it, here are some tips:
--Eat everything you want, but not all of what you want
--Eat slowly
--Engage in the conversation
--Eat alot of water rich foods like veggies and fruit to fill youup
--Eat a healthy breakfast that morning, and don't starve yourself before dinner
--Take digestive enzymes with dinner (YL Essentialzyme is great)
--Walk after dinner
===============================
3. My Personal Gratitude List
===============================
First of all I am grateful for learning about the power of gratitude (and I learned about it without the guilt trip, thank you Mother).

The quote in this issue from Meister Eckhart is one of the simple yet profound things that give me sustenance in my life. I believe the energy of gratitude helps us to create more of what we want. I want to express my gratitude here to the special people involved in some way to support this newsletter, Home Spa Lady, and other of my undertakings that somehow show up in front of you readers:
--My teachers and mentors Tom Antion and Joan Stewart(http://tinyurl.com/y4sk3g)
--Netaim (http://tinyurl.com/g9rwt) the professional organization that helps give credibility and monitor to online newsletters and magazines
--The guests on my teleseminars this past year: Linda Smith, RN, MSN, HNC, Sheri Zarchy, Laura Norman, Robert Nash, MD, Kaayla Daniel, Ilya Pozin, Gayle Carson, The Blog Squad, Jody Colvart, Joan Stewart
--My wonderful editor Christine Jackson, RN, PhD, who I feel so blessed to have as a friend and on my team
--My coordinator Dawn Peralta, RN, a brilliant holistic nurse with lots of talent
--My virtual assistant Pat Zickefoose who handles much of my Peaceful Passages site (http://www.peacefulpassages.org)
--My music consultant Ken Townshend
--My videographers Joel Schwartz, his daughter Avery, Bill Kling
--My partner John Maeder
--All of my many friends who help me hold my vision
--My four legged little boy, Prin, who puts a smile on my face every other minute
--You, the Home Spa Lady reader, who has enough gumption to get involved in your own health and beauty care, and who takes the time (or at least attempts to!) and the energy to take that step, sometimes outside of the box, to look within yourself and your home, for resources to live a balanced, healthy, and beautiful life. ============================================

Thanksgiving Divorce
A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York the day before Thanksgiving and says, "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough. "Pop, what are you talking about?" the son screams. We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the father says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her.

"Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this," She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up.

The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says, "they're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way."

1. Can Your Purse Make You Sick?
======================================
I have a "shoes off" policy in my household.

It just feels very natural to me to take off the shoes we've been wearing all day that have taken us in and out of public restrooms, malls, parking lots, etc.

Many cultures practice this too. As a matter of fact, in Asia it is considered very rude to wear shoes in someone's home. There is also an unspoken part of this policy that many people don't even think of that relates to handbags, purses, briefcases, backpacks, and computer bags.

A friend of the family was visiting from out of town a few weeks ago. I picked him up at the train station and saw that he was traveling with a backpack and a soft carry on suitcase - both of which were on the ground where the cabbies line up, where dogs, and probably some people pee, and a few homeless lie. When we entered my home he saw my little sign in the hallway requesting shoes off and he politely followed that request by slipping out of his shoes. He proceeded to carry his backpack into the kitchen because he was excited to show me his new book. He slapped the backpack on my kitchen table where we eat our meals. I cringed and asked him to put his bag on the floor. I've had quite a few other people come into my home and do the same thing with their handbags and computer bags. I'm surprised more people aren't thinking about this type of thing. It must be the nurse in me.

Well, there has been a study done on what microbes actually travel on women's purses. At Nelson Labs in Salt Lake City they tested the bacteria type and count on the average women's purse. Microbiologist Amy Karren of Nelson Labs said that nearly all ofthe purses tested were high in harmful bacteria like Staph Aureous, Pseudomonas, Salmonella, and E-Coli. In one sampling four out of five purses tested positive for salmonella. But the worst was what Amy identified "There is fecal contamination on the purses" (think of how often women set their purses down in public rest rooms).

How do you prevent tramping these contaminants into your household short of emptying out the contents of your purse into another every time you enter your home?

Here are some tips:

--Use hooks behind doors in restrooms to hang your purse
--Use a hook in your home to hang your purse
--Don't place your purse on the floor in public places, keep on your lap or hang on your chair
--Wipe off the bottom and outside of your purse frequently

What do I do?

I treat my purse like my shoes and keep it at the doorway in a special place.
I also carry a purse size spray bottle of Thieves in my purse.
I spray my purse with it when I feel I have been in areas that are dirty.

More than anything, just become more aware of your belongings and the surroundings they are in. When you start to view through newly aware eyes, cleaner living will just make plain sense.

2. Meditation: The Art Of Self-Recovery
========================================
By: Saleem Rana

What you focus on determines your reality because your mind becomes active in acquiring and bringing into your awareness the things that you focus on. If you focus on lack, limitation, negativity, and scarcity, then that is what you bring into your experience. If you focus on abundance, expansion, positive things, and plenty, then that is what you bring into your experience.

A moment of introspection will make this obvious. If it is that easy to switch our reality, from one of suffering to one of joyful experience, why do we persist in injuring ourselves? It is because we are not in charge of our minds. Rather our minds are in charge of us. We, a conscious being, are dominated by our conditioning. This is why the practice of meditation is important. Every time we meditate, we dissolve more and more conditioning. We get off autopilot and take over the path our ship is cruising on. As we let go of more and more of our reflexive thinking, we start to take charge of our own minds, and our reality slowly shifts.

Of course, this is not easy. Yet, it's not much fun living a scattered and chaotic life either. Until our awareness comes to the surface, we can't really expect to improve our health, boosts our finances, or be able to calm the storms of a relationship. Our dreams are always one step ahead of us, lost in the mist of "someday I will...". The path is simple.

Learn a method of meditation and practice it. Like any discipline or skill, you must learn to meditate and practice frequently. But, if you stick with it, the rewards are immense. Increased self-awareness, increased control of your mind, and increased appreciation and meaning of your own self and life are but just a few. In many religious traditions, it is said that we are so often "asleep". What exactly does this mean? It means that we are almost wholly unconscious. We think and act in ways that are not in our best interests. A conscious person is an aware person and awareness is something that comes when we release the subconscious programs that run our lives.

A brief review of yesterday will show you how your notion of self-control and inner mastery is pretty much an illusion. If meditation is not your thing, then try contemplation, sitting in silence, quietly reflecting on who you are and what it is that is important to you. Just following your breath in and out is a good way to begin. Should your thoughts wander, acknowledge them and gently lead them back to the "here and now". A daily routine where you work on raising your awareness will do you a world of good. It will, in fact, change your world, placing you in a frame of mind more favorable to your interests and wishes.

6. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

True stories from the Turkey Butterball Hotline, where people call to get advice how to cook a Turkey from the experts

--Thanksgiving Dinner on the run: A woman called 1-800-323-4848 to find out how long it would take to roast her turkey. To answer the question, the Talk-Line home economist asked how much the bird weighed. The woman responded, "I don't know, it's still running around outside."

--Tofu turkey? No matter how you slice it, Thanksgiving just isn't Thanksgiving without turkey. A restaurant owner in California wanted to know how to roast a turkey for a vegetarian menu.

--A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?" The stock boy replied, "No ma'am, they're dead."

1. You've Got Lipstick on Your Teeth
======================================
When you see a woman with lipstick on her teeth, do you tell her?Would you want someone to tell you?That's always such a social dilemma, but more importantly its ahealth issue. Do you know that there are significant amounts oflead in most popular brands of lipstick?Or, is this an urban legend? About once a month I receive thesame email that has been circulating on the internet for a fewyears about nine of the top cosmetic companies whose lipstickscontain lead.There is also the discussion as to what ingredients are inlipsticks to color lips, even if they do not contain lead.And now there are lip volumizers to plump up lips "Angelina Joliestyle". I've been to several spa shows where these lip plumpersare featured and I have sampled them. All I could say is "yuck -I can't wait to get this off my lips!". I looked at theingredients and read the many names of petrochemicals and dyes.And then I see essential oils (probably industrial rather thanmedicinal quality) listed. I thought - "Why not make my own withmy organic ingredients?"So here's what I did - mixed some of Young Living's Rose Ointment(which feels wonderful on the lips anyway) with the tiniestamount of cinnamon (I touch the "lip" of the bottle with myfinger and dab together in my palm with Rose Ointment). Adesirable tingling sensation occurs from the blood and oxygenthat this brings to the lips for a nice naturally red plumpedpout! Licking the lips is an added benefit, getting the immunestimulating effects of the therapeutic oils both inside andoutside of the body. One of Gary Young's mottos about personalcare products is "if you can't eat it, don't wear it".

2. What About Splenda?
=======================
The gabfest on the sweet news continues in my email box fromreaders. After bashing aspartame I was deluged with questionsabout Splenda. I go to the experts for these answers.Dr. Mercola. who has the most popular website on the internet onalternative medicine and nutrition, has just written a bookcalled "Sweet Misery".

Here's a four minute video on this topic and his book:http://tinyurl.com/ycjuao

3. Does This Make Any "Cents"? Bee and Hornet Bites=====================================================
A reader writes in:This comes from a person who works at a school and thei
nformation came from a local doctor.A couple of weeks ago I was unfortunate enough to get stung byboth a bee and hornet while working in the garden. My arm swelledup so off to the doctor I went. The clinic gave me cream and anantihistamine.The next day the swelling was getting progressively worse so offto my regular doctor I went. I had an infected arm and needed anantibiotic. What was interesting is what the physician told me."The next time you get stung put a penny on the bite for 15minutes." I thought, wow next time (if there ever is one) I willtry it.Well that night my friend Shelley's niece got stung by two bees.When she came over to swim I looked at the bite and it hadalready started to swell. So off I went to get my money.I taped a penny to her arm for 15 minutes. The next morning,there was no sign of a bite. Were we surprised!We decided her niece just wasn't allergic to the sting.Well guess what happened again on Saturday night?I was helping Shelley deadhead her flowers and a hornet stungme again two times on my left hand. I thought, here I go againhaving to go to the doctor for yet another antibiotic.Well, I promptly went into the house, again got my money out, andtaped two pennies to my bites and then sat and sulked for 15minutes.The penny took the sting out of the bite immediately. I stillwasn't sure what was going to happen. In the meantime thehornets were attacking Shelley and she got stung on the thumb.Again I used the penny.The next morning I could only see the spot where the hornet stungme. No redness, no swelling! I went over the see Shelley and herswas the same. Couldn't even tell where she got bit. Then Shelleygot stung again on Monday night on her back while cutting thegrass.This penny thing is going to make us money at school because onceagain it worked.I just wanted to share the marvelous information in case any ofyou are experiencing the same problem at home. We need to have astock of pennies on hand at school. The physician said somehowthe copper in the penny counteracts the bite. I would never havebelieved it. But it definitely does work.

1. Cleaning for the Cleaning Lady
===================================
Do you ever find yourself cleaning for the cleaning lady?
I do it all the time. And I remember teasing my mother forcleaning before Isabella, her cleaning lady, would come, andnow I'm doing the same thing! I always thought Mom did it as animage thing - so that she didn't appear to be so messy.

I do it mostly for organizational reasons. I want to make suremy things are in their proper place so that they're not just putinto piles for me to go through later - doubling the amountof work I must do. But I do clean as I organize to save mycleaning lady some steps herself. To some that may seem ridiculous.

What's really ridiculous though is cleaning right after thecleaning lady has been there. The reason I end up doing this isbecause maybe I haven't taken the time to explain the non-toxicproducts that I want her to use. In my experience mostprofessional cleaning services use petrochemical basedproducts that are toxic. I'm extremely sensitive to most ofthese products, and have a difficult time if they are used in myhousehold.

Here are some ways to clear your environment afterpetrochemical based household products have been used:
--Open the window and doors (tough if the weather is cold)
--Run ceiling fans
--Diffuse therapeutic essential oils - they naturally destroypetrochemicals (try putting a drop of lemon oil on a styrofoamcup to see how this works)
--Put a drop of therapeutic essential oil on your kitchen counterand bathroom sink area and wipe (orange or pine are good to use)
--Sprinkle a few drops of therapeutic essential oil in yourbathtub and run the shower for a few minutes

If you do take the time to educate your cleaners on the use ofnon-toxic ways to clean your household, here are some suggestionsto give them:
--To clean mirrors and windows:: mix 1/4 c. white vinegar with 2c. water and 1/2 tsp liquid soap - use in spray bottle
--If you want a natural abrasive for cleaning tubs, showers, andsinks: use Borax and mix with dishwashing soap - add a few dropsof lemon or pine essential oil
--Use Thieves Household Cleaner by Young Living Essential Oils.Thieves Cleaner is a proprietary suspension of safe surfactants(wetting agents) and Thieves® essential oil blend. Research atWeber State University has shown that Thieves blend is well over90% anti-microbial, and very safe to use.
Theives Household Cleaner is highly concentrated - here are theratios to mix with water for these cleaning jobs:
--Light Degreasing 60:1
--Medium Degreasing 30:1
--Heavy Degreasing 15:1
--Floors 100:1
--Walls 30:1
--Upholstery, Fabrics, Carpet Spotting 40:1
--Carpet 100:1
--Glass 320:1
--Pots and Pans 100:1
--Hand Cleaner 1:1

In our homes we have a choice who to bring in to clean and whichproducts they use. Finding and educating a cleaning service about using natural cleaners may be tough but worth it.We don't have a choice as to who cleans our rooms nor which products are used when we stay in a hotel.
Here are some tips onhow to minimize exposure to toxic cleaners in your hotel rooms:
--Don't let the maid clean your room every day - just get yourtowels replaced and trash emptied, and make your own bed
--Place a hand towel sprinkled with your favorite therapeuticessential oils in the vents of the heat/ac system and turn on thefan
--Run a steam shower and dowse a few drops of lavender into thewater streams

2. Yoga for Low Back Pain
=========================================
By: Leah K Copbagy

Back pain is the most common reason people seek medicalattention. Using yoga for low back pain relief works on both longterm and acute muscle strain by strengthening the muscles andimproving flexibility.

A study of 101 sufferers of chronic back pain proved that agentle form of yoga, called viniyoga, was more effective atrelieving lower back pain than aerobic exercise. By toning themuscles, relieving tension and improving all-over flexibility,those who used yoga for low back pain saw improved function oftheir lower backs. These effects included pain relief and werefound to last long after the study ended.
Tight hamstrings and weak stomach muscles also contribute to backpain. Postures used in yoga for low back pain, while usually notproviding instant relief, will alleviate lower back pain overtime.

If you suffer from back pain, it's best to ease into yoga toprevent further injury. Performing the poses slowly and onlystretching to within your comfort zone is the best course of action.

A pose to try when using yoga for low back pain is the lyingtwist. While lying on your back,stretch your arms out to yoursides. Your palms and shouldersshould be pressed firmly against the floor, with your shoulderblades turned under and your toes spread. Bend your knees uptoward your chest, while remaining comfortable, making sure toinhale as you lift. Keep your knees and ankles together and exhale while rolling your knees to the right.
Focus on pressing your arms out and your shouldersfirmly into the floor. Be sure you are breathing deeplywhile holding this pose. Now gently turn your head to look atyour left hand. Concentrate on relaxing and feeling the gentlestretch of this pose. Using this type of yoga for low back painwill stretch the spine and neck, as well as strengthen themuscles in your midsection.

Prevention is always the best medicine. While using yoga for lowback pain can help with previous injuries, learning how not torepeat the injury is an essential part of keeping your backmuscles healthy. When bending to pick something up, even a lightobject, it's important to protect your lower back. For a lightobject use a one handed lift, while using the other hand to braceagainst your thigh or a nearby piece of furniture for added support.

Heavier objects, or moving objects such as a child, should alwaysbe lifted with two hands. Place your feet apart in a wide stance and face the object to be lifted. Standing close to the object,squat down and place your weight on your heels. Push your body upto a standing position with your leg muscles, using your tightened abdominal muscles to keep your spine straight.
By practicing safe lifting techniques and exercising your back muscles properly and regularly, most back pain can be avoided. Ifmuscles are injured, easing yourself into yoga can be abeneficial and healthy treatment for your pain. Therefore, the next time your back gives you grief, try using yoga for low back pain reduction.

3. A Delicious Way to Avoid Artificial Sweeteners
=================================

Here is a most wholesome sweetener that is a nectar derived froma plant in Mexico - the Blue Agave plant.This has a very low glycemic index which makes it ideal fordiabetics, hypoglycemics, dieters, and athletes, as well as thosewho wish to avoid sucrose or artificial sweeteners. It is muchsweeter than sugar but has a glycemic index of only 11 - whereas sugar has a glycemic index of 68-85. (High glycemic index spikesblood sugars and then insulin release leading to a "sugarcrash").You can use agave in recipes by using 1/2 to 3/4 cup in place of1 cup of sugar. You can also use in beverages, baking, oncereals, or general table top use.Young Living purchased their own organic agave plantation inMexico. Young Living's Agave is organic and kosher. 1. From the Belly of the Pumpkin
====================================
Pumpkin Seeds - or Cucurbita Seeds are full of nutrients! . . .. .
such as protein, fiber, iron, copper, magnesium, manganese,and phosphorous, as well as the amino acids arginine and glutamicacid. They also contain calcium, potassium, zinc, selenium,folate, and niacin. And they are also a source of linolenic acid(which is believed to help prevent hardening of the arteries).
Here are some of the things that munching on a small handful ofseeds can help with:
--Calm an irritated and overactive bladder occasionallyassociated with bedwetting (Germany's Commission E has approvedusing pumpkin seeds for bedwetting and other bladder problems)
--Get rid of intestinal parasites (the ingredient cucurbitin inthe seeds is believed to paralyze the worms over time forcingthem to lose their grip and get expelled from the body)
--Help with symptoms of prostate enlargement (the use of theseseeds for this problem is traced back to Native Americanhealers). A clinical trial done using pumpkin seeds for BPH(Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy) showed improvements in symptomssuch as post-void dribbling, weak urine flow, and time spenturinating in many of the participants. Fifty-threemen with BPH took part in this three-month, double-blind studycompleted in 1990.

You can get nutrients and benefits from pumpkin seeds inmany forms, such as:
--The seed itself
--Pumpkin seed oil
--Dried herb
--TeaYou can buy the seeds in health food stores either in the shellor already shelled. And you can get them raw or roasted.The oil is wonderful, we get ours from Donna Gates (author "BodyEcology Diet").
Like most oils, it goes rancid so you do need tokeep it refrigerated.
Here's a great recipe for getting rid of those parasites andworms:
--Make an emulsion by grinding up the seeds, mixing them withsome sugar (or honey) and some milk (or water)
--Sip this mixture in three daily doses, ingesting a total ofabout 2 ounces of the emulsion.
--Alternatively, make a tea with the ground seeds by infusingthem in hot water; allow the brew to cool slightly beforestraining and sipping. Don't take more than 16 ounces atone time.
Here's a tip for men who are interested in good prostate health- preventing enlargement, or even helping your treatment along:chew a handful of these seeds every day!Make them in an easy and delicious way at home - from your ownpumpkins! Harvest the seeds yourself from your freshpumpkins or other squash as well. You then roast them slowly onan oiled baking sheet in a 250 degree oven until crisp.

2. The "Not So Sweet" News Continues . . .or does it?======================================================
Healthy Halloween Treats / Silly Tricks
Should we even bother to talk about the sugar issue this week? Imean, it is Halloween and all. . .
How about if we skip the heavy "should and should nots" - leavingthat for later, and just read some suggestions on healthyalternatives for the Treats. Or skip the Treats and just do theTricks!
Healthy Halloween Treats:
--Small box of raisins
--Bag of peanuts still in shell
--Juice boxes
--Individually wrapped fruit cups
--Dollar store Halloween themed pencils / erasers
--Colored Chalk
--Stickers
--Temporary TattoosSilly

Halloween Tricks:

--After you give them candy, hand the trick-or-treaters a bill
--Open the door dressed as a giant fish. Immediately collapse,and don't move or say anything until the trick-or-treaters goaway.
When you answer the door, hold up one candy bar, throw itout into the street, and yell, "Crawl for it!"
--Insist that the trick-or-treaters each do ten push-ups beforeyou give them any candy
--Hand out menus to the trick-or-treaters and let them ordertheir own candy. Keep asking if anyone wants to see the winelist
--Answer the door dressed as a dentist. Angrily give the trick-or-treaters a two-hour lecture on tooth decay
--Answer the door with a mouthful of M & M's and several half-eaten candy bars in your hands. Act surprised, and close thedoor. Open it again in a few seconds, and insist that you don'thave any candy
--Put a crown on a pumpkin and put the pumpkin on a throne onyour porch. Insist that all of the trick-or-treaters bow beforethe pumpkin

3. Home-Made Last Minute Costumes
=========================================
--Cat woman
Black ears
Black leotard
Black tights
Black boots
Make tail out of black felt
Black lipstick and nail polish

--I Dream of Jeanie

Use a tube top for the top, and cut off a red vest for thejacket. Use baggie pants that can be dyed pink and an old pair of ballet shoes.

--China Doll

White and Red Face Makeup
Thong Slippers
Kimono Dress
Paint face white and add red rosy cheeks shaped in a circle.
Put hair in buns, wear thong slippers and the kimono(Chinese dress).

--Frazzled Housewife

Wear your hair in rollers, put on a green facial mask or greenface paint, wear pajamas, black socks, ratty slippers and a dirtybathrobe tied cock-eyed. Put a TV Guide and a remote in yourpocket, carry a crusty spatula, optional cigarette hanging out ofmouth, use brown eyeshadow under your eyes to make bags.

--Instant Old

Apply base make-up all over face and neck. "Scrunch" up your facefirst to emphasize your "natural" wrinkles, and apply make-upthat is lighter than your natural skin-tone (work on a small areaat a time for best results). Then "de-scrunch" and fill in thecreases using a soft brown eye-liner pencil. Create sunken cheeksby darkening the cheek hollows. Emphasize the creases around yournose, and darken along your jaw line. Create crows feet by youreyes. Pucker up your lips to create wrinkles around your mouth.Add liver spots, broken capillaries, etc. Blend everything with amake-up sponge. When you are all done, power allover with baby powder to set make-up and give a dry skinappearance. You can also use baby powder to make your hair lookgray.

4. Essential Oil Tip: Sugar Scrubs
===================================
Sugar Scrubs are wonderful exfoliants.Yes, there are plenty of home-made recipes for sugar scrubs whereyou can add your essential oils, but why bother with time andtrouble when you can simply add sugar to your favorite essentialoil bath gel?My two favorite bath gels are both from Young Living.Morning Start has lemongrass, rosemary, juniper, and peppermint.Evening Peace has sandalwood, geranium, rosewood, lemon, bluetansy, jasmine, roman chamomile, bergamot, ylang ylang,palmarosa, and clary sage.Add a dime size dollop of gel in your palm, cover it with sugarand scrub on your body.A good way to do this is run a bath for yourself, stand in thefilled bathtub using the tub water to wet and rinse your skin.After the scrub, do a soak.
Order these bath gels from your Young Living distributor or

1. If Your Canary Dies, Get Out of the Kitchen
==============================================
I'm a coal miner's grand-daughter.My Grandpa Haley and two of my uncles were miners in WesternPennsylvania. Pretty little yellow canaries helped to keepthem alive in these mines.Ventilation, poor oxygen, and gases were an ongoing concern forthem while working in the mine. The presence of methane gas andcarbon monoxide could poison them unknowingly, or cause anexplosion. They didn't have sophisticated equipment to detectthese gases, so instead they used canaries.Canaries, birds that swing on their perch and sing and make noiseall day, would start to sway and quiet down when exposed to thesmallest amount of these noxious gases. The miners would takethem into the coal mines with them to signal them about thepresence of serious gas situations, letting them know when to getout of the mine.It has been known that birds die from toxic fumes, and it is nowknown that birds can die in the presence of off-gassingfrom Teflon pots and pans. Maybe you want a canary in yourkitchen to give you an indication when and if there is a problem.Or maybe you just want to get rid of your Teflon and non-stickpans all together.Read more about Teflon dangers: http://tinyurl.com/y9gk99
-------
Here's a great article about this topic. Make sure you read belowfor a healthy alternative to non-stick pans. This cookware ismy favorite thing in the kitchen!We Should Pay Attention to the Canary in the Kitchenby Beth GreerSan Francisco ChronicleAug 16, 2006If fumes from nonstick pans kill birds, what are they doing tous?In just two or three minutes of preheating, your pan will giveoff fumes that will make you sick. Teflon coated and othernonstick cookware breaks apart and emits a toxic chemical calledperfluoroocanoic acid, or PFOA.Studies have shown that PFOA is present at low levels in 9 out of10 Americans, and in the blood of most newborns. In one study, of600 children tested, 96 percent had PFOA in their blood. Animalstudies strongly suggest that when enough PFOA builds up in thebody, it can cause cancer, liver damage, growth defects andimmune damage.For 50 years, DuPont the manufacturer of Teflon, has said thatits coatings do not emit hazardous chemicals through normal use.But recent DuPont studies, show that at high temperatures (morethan 500 degrees F) Teflon and others release at least 6 toxicgases, including 2 carcinogens, 2 global pollutants and MFA(monofluoroacetic acid), a chemical lethal to humans at lowdoses. At temperatures that DuPont scientists say are reached onstovetop drip pans, nonstick coatings breakdown to a chemical-warfare agent known as PFIB, and a chemical analog of the WorldWar II nerve gas phosgene. The environmental group warns that thecoatings break down at a much lower temperature, just 325 degreesF - a medium flame.Avian veterinarians have known for decades that Teflon off-gasesare a leading cause of death among birds, and estimated thathundreds, perhaps thousands of birds are killed each year.Like the canaries that were used in the coal mines, birds act asan early warning system for humans. The EPA recommends that birdowners avoid cookware and heated appliances with nonstickcoatings completely. Perhaps everyone should be heeding thiswarning.While you can choose whether or not to use Teflon pans, there isno way for you to tell if food containers and packaging containPFOA. In one frightening example, the Food and DrugAdministration has looked at microwavable popcorn packaging andfound that PFOA is not only present but also that it gets intothe oil from the packaging during the cooking process.You may want to microwave your popcorn in a brown paper baginstead. DuPont also makes Teflon silicone lubricant aerosolspray used to waterproof, protect and preserve rubber, plastic,vinyl, leather metal and wood. One can only imagine how thoseparticles are ending up in our lungs.Try switching to Stainless Steel - most chefs agree it brownsfood better. Cast Iron is another great alternative to nonstick.After using a little more butter or oil than we have becomeaccustomed to, you can turn out a fantastic omelet.Note from Marilee about her favorite cookware: TitaniumTitanium is relatively new to the cookware market. It was onceregarded as an exotic metal only affordable by the aerospaceindustry.Here are some of the features:--Natural non-stick surface--You can cook with little or no oil, fat or water--Food retains maximum nutrients, enzymes and flavor--Meats are tastier, juicier and tender--Easy to clean--Energy efficient--Safe to use with metal utensilsThis cookware is not that easy to find for purchase. 2. The "Not So Sweet" News Continues . . .===========================================
Well, my news item last week about the dangers of aspartame withthe links to websites certainly ruffled some feathers, but Idon't care.If I can affect one person whose migraines disappear, or whosedizziness stops, or whose seizures cease, or tumors shrinkbecause this information opened the door to learning about apossible contributory factor in their illness, then let themruffle!I can't help but think about one of my clients who was diagnosedwith "possible thyroid cancer" and was going for abiopsy of the nodules that were growing on her thyroid. Afterlearning that she used 3 to 6 Equal packets a day in her icedteas, and ate many foods that were artificially sweetened becauseshe wanted to adjust her weight, we started to discuss the ideaof her removing all aspartame from of her food regimen. She madea decision to stop eating anything that included aspartame andshe switched over to stevia to sweeten her food.She also did two other things: applied Frankincense essentialoil topically over her thyroid area, and did several castor oilpacks on the sides of her neck area over her lymphatics (yes, Ido promote essential oils and am a distributor for a company,and I do swear by castor oil for detox. And no, I am not aphysician, I am just sharing what I know from training andexperience. If you have been given this diagnosis, you should seea doctor).She called me the day the biopsy was scheduled crying joyfully.After she was prepped for the procedure and they viewed herthyroid to biopsy the nodules, they could not perform the biopsybecause the nodules weren't there.Was it the elimination of the aspartame? The Frankincense? Thecastor oil packs? We thought it was a combination of all three.Either way, the question came up - which is a question shared bymany - why aren't more people aware of these dangers, and whydoesn't the FDA inform or protect us about this? The FDAapproved aspartame in 1974 for limited use only with furtherapproval pending on research results. More research was done bythe company that was to profit from the approval, and seriousdeficiencies were found in the integrity of the research.

Thewhole story can be found at Dr.Mercola's website, here's thelink: http://tinyurl.com/6jqno.

Stay tuned for next week's newsletter to find out why stevia andagave would be good choices for sweeteners.

Don't live in any of these cities or you want to celebrate aspa-lifestyle everyday - in a natural way?Here are 12 Natural Ways to Make Every Day A Spa Day:--Let the birds wake you upThere is nothing harsher to the body and mind at rest than thepiercing shrill of an alarm clock to wake it out of itsrestorative sleep. The penetrating sound of a noisy alarm canstart the day off on a stressful note. It can create the naturalrelease of adrenaline which increases the heart rate, which thencreates a cascade of symptoms already leading you to stress, andyou haven't even gotten out of bed yet!There are options to these noisy alarms such as mechanical re-creations of nature sounds, but why not have the real thing?Open your window and tune yourself into the soft hum of naturalbird sounds in between 5 to 6am . The sounds and vibrations ofthe birds at this hour are positive subliminal frequencies thatcan balance your energy system.--Take a morning walkIt is said that the morning dew holds a special frequency thatcan revitalize your energy field, especially if you walk on thedew-ridden grass. The other benefits of the morning walk arethat it can lower your stress level before you even get startedfor the day. It also gives you a chance to organize yourthoughts, plan and visualize your day.--Put music on with the coffeeSet the mood you want to create for the day by choosing music toplay in the morning as you get ready for your day. Play partymusic if you want a fun day, soothing music if you want apeaceful day, or classical music if you need to do a lot ofthinking during the day.--Stretch in the showerHot water in your morning shower can loosen up muscles so it iseasier to get a good stretch. Muscles that are stretching areusing more oxygen and create more circulation just by the simplefact they are in motion.--Eat a balanced breakfastEating right in the morning is another way to set the tone forthe day. Your endocrine system (the part of the body that helpsto handle stress) gets the right message and fuel to deal withthe stress that it will have to handle. Protein and complexcarbs are the way to go in the morning!-Journal and Set GoalsRecording thoughts, intentions, and results is a good thing to doat the beginning and end of your day. With your morning coffeeand your calendar in front of you, create your "to do" list foryour chores, your self care, and even include the positivethoughts you want to think!--Plan a 30-minute exercise slot for your dayWhether it's at lunchtime or during the evening "winding down"hours, getting your body moving for at least 30 minutes at somepoint in the day is critical for your lymphatic system. Thelymphatic system needs movement to do its job of detoxifying thebody. Along with delivering more oxygen and increasingcardiovascular circulation, mobilizing lymph by movement is oneof your best daily treatments.--Clear desktop clutterClearing clutter from your workspace and environment can helpclear the clutter of the mind. It can enable you to become morecreative and productive. Take 3 to 5 minutes to clear your workenvironment of clutter.--Breathe and be happy in the process of your dayRemember it's the journey, not the destination. If the end ofyour workday is the goal of your day, you may wan t to re-framehow you view your day. If that doesn't work then get another jobwhere you will not be so attached to finishing the day.--Enjoy family and friends in the evening, and put the tube asideSharing community projects or just joining together for thepurpose of being together is a healthy way to wind down your day.Spending quality time with loved ones is a good way to reinforceyour reason for being. Whether it's about you being important tosomeone or someone being important to you, sharing timetogether from the heart and hearth is balancing for the soul.--Take a Home Spa bathThere is no better way to end the day than to soak in yourprivate tub filled with bubbles, salts, or special oils.Immersing your body in water (a shower can be just as effective!)can help to clear the events of the day from your aura and relaxthe body. This naturally relaxes the mind and it's a great segueto a sound restorative sleep.--Use essential oils to help your day and nightEssential oils can allow you to take the spa experience intoevery moment of your daily and nightly routine. Not only do theycreate an aromatic environment, but the actions of therapeuticgrade essential oils (to be differentiated from perfume oils),can address little troubles that come up in every day life suchas: headaches, stomach trouble, sinus issues, difficultysleeping, and even emotional fluctuations! A daily arsenal tohave on hand would be peppermint, lavender, lemon, Peace &Calming, and PanAway (the last two are trademarked blends fromYoung Living Essential Oil Company). Dowse your body, yourcarpet, your workspace, and your friends with essential oils tomake your days and nights go smoother.

For example, "If anyone needs me, I'll be in thebathroom."Put mosquito netting around your cubicle.Every time someone asks you to do something, ask if they wantfries with that.Encourage your colleagues to join you in a little synchronizedchair dancing.Put your garbage can on your desk and label it 'IN'.Develop an unnatural fear of staplers.Send e-mail messages that advertise free pizza, doughnuts, etc.,in the breakroom. When people complain that there was nothingthere, lean back, rub your stomach, and say, 'You've got to befaster than that.'Put decaf in the coffee maker for 3 weeks. Once everyone hasgotten over their caffeine addictions, switch to espresso.Reply to everything someone says with, "That's what you think."Finish all your sentences with, "in accordance with theprophecy."Adjust the tint on your monitor so that the brightness lights upthe entire working area.
