1. Super Bowel Sunday
===========================

A great alternative to hanging out and watching the Super Bowl
game - especially if you have no idea or interest in it - is
making Sunday a day of self-care centered around another bowl -
in the bathroom!

A private colon cleansing session in your bathroom can be a Super
Day for your Bowel especially if your lower intestines have been
a bit sluggish and aren't emptying comfortably enough for you,
or if you are feeling toxic and need a cleansing.

There is a difference between a nutritional cleanse and a
mechanical cleanse.

Nutritional cleansing is where you would take supplements or
ingest something to cleanse.

Mechanical colon cleansing is where you literally wash out the
colon with water, soapy water, or a therapeutic variation (some
people use salts/baking soda/essential oils in their water).

I'm going to briefly give you some tips on doing this in your
bathroom by yourself - without having to buy any special
equipment worth hundreds of dollars (like a colema board or a
colonic machine).

As a nurse and certified colon therapist and a long time
proponent of colon cleansing for health and beauty, I believe
everyone needs to have an understanding of this option for self
care, especially women.

I think that colon cleansing helps prevent breast cancer. This is
just my hunch, but its a strong one. I often wonder how many
women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have a history of
constipation. I don't think there are any studies on this - but
if any of you know of any please let me know. This is a huge
interest of mine - but that is all for another article.

Anyway. . . .

These tips can answer many questions that you may have
if you have considered cleansing at home.

This is not a step by step instructional. It's just
information to get you started either thinking about it,
trying it for yourself, or learning more.

Colon cleansing with water has been done for eons. The Essenes
did it with river water and the Egyptians with herbal
concoctions.

Many of you reading this probably had a grandmother or great
grandmother who used enemas as a way to heal the body
of sickness.

The holistic approach to a home enema for a general colon
cleanse is not about going to the pharmacy and buying a
Fleets pre-mixed liquid in a disposable container and
using that (as in preps for medical procedures - although
it does cleanse).

The home enema for a general cleansing is about using distilled
water at room or body temperature with your own personal
(reusable) equipment.

The equipment that I recommend runs under $20 and can be
purchased at many local drug stores. It would be a kit
consisting of a red hot water bottle and tubing and a few
different nozzles, one of which is an enema nozzle tip.

You can warm up a gallon of distilled water by submerging
the closed bottle in the bathtub full of hot water for a short
time. You would want to get it to be even with your
body temperature.

You would not use sink water because it has chlorine and that
would kill the good flora.

Yes, the flora will be slightly affected with a gentle enema
but if you are using water or even gentle soapy water it
won't be that disruptive.

Many colon therapists will open an acidophilus capsule and put
it in the final rinse water with your colonic - and you could
do the same with your enema.

Think of this as an internal bath where you are just rinsing out
the lower colon. The benefits are amazing - such as a fresh
taste in your mouth, the whites of your eyes get brighter, your
skin feels softer, you can breathe easier - and this is only a
few things of what can happen, even after one little cleanse!

If you want to learn more about this I suggest Bernard Jensen's
book Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management.

2. Essential Oil Tip: Belly Button as Oil Holder
================================================

I'm just having too much fun here.

I couldn't stop laughing when I wrote this tip
but can I tell you this is one of the best tips
that you can use - especially if you are balancing
the digestive system!

If you are a massage therapist - you might already
be doing this!

And if you are a mom, this is a great way for getting
oils on your child's belly - most kids love when you
play with their belly button!

And the best essential oil for balancing the digestive
system?

Of course! Young Living's Di-Gize!

this very moment is the only one you know you
have for sure."

4. Recipe of the Week: Athlete's Super Fuel Juice
================================================

Juicing or a light food intake is important when
you are colon cleansing.

Here is an "Athlete's Super Fuel Juice" to satisfy
the Super Bowl and Super Bowel experience!

1/2 watermelon
1 lemon
5 oranges
1 can frozen pineapple concentrate (no sugar!)

Juice your fruit and let the pineapple concentrate melt in the
juices and enjoy!

(I would suggest adding some Ningxia Red for some
real KICK!)

5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

The Alternative "Super Bowl"

During the Super Bowl, there was another football game of note
between the big animals and the little animals.

The big animals were crushing little animals and at half-time,
the coach made a passionate speech to rally the little animals.

At the start of the second half the big animals had the ball.

The first play, the elephant got stopped for no gain.
The second play, the rhino was stopped for no gain.
On third down, the hippo was thrown for a 5 yard loss.

The defense huddled around the coach and he asked excitedly,
"Who stopped the elephant?"
"I did," said the centipede.

"Who stopped the rhino?"
"Uh, that was me too," said the centipede.

"And how about the hippo? Who hit him for a 5 yard loss?"
"Well, that was me as well," said the centipede.

"So where were you during the first half?" demanded the coach.
"Well," said the centipede, "I was having my ankles taped."

1. Hesitate to Vaccinate?
===========================

What a hot topic!

I haven't had my email box a-buzzing like this with any
other topic that I've ever covered!

Your pro and con viewpoints are coming in - unsolicited!

Here's a sampling of what I'm receiving:

--"Take me off your email list, Marilee!"

--"Thank you for covering this topic Marilee!"

--"I hope you are not going to tell people not to get
vaccinations!"

--"I'm going to forward this to my Holistic Mom's group because
they don't want to vaccinate their children!"

Many of you are in the health care profession and believe that
it is critical to immunize because you work with disease daily.

Some of you are holistic health care professionals who know
about the ravages of mercury and are working like heck to help
people detox from heavy metals, most of which were introduced
into their bodies via preservatives from vaccinations.

Then there are many of you who are parents and grandparents
of children who are living with vaccine injuries - or your child
or someone you know whose child was diagnosed with autism shortly
after a round of shots.

Some of you feel that it is a social responsibility to receive
vaccinations.

Many of you have faith in the immune system, innate healing
ability, and the power to NOT be a susceptible host to every
microorganism that comes into view.

Whatever side of the fence you are on, you will be interested in
Maureen's story.

I will be interviewing Maureen in a "Green Tea with Marilee"
interview on Thursday, January 24th at 7 PM EST.
http://snipurl.com/hesitatetovaccinate

Maureen Drummond is an expert in vaccine injuries. No, she is
not a medical doctor or a scientist - she is a mom of two vaccine
injured children who has spent countless hours in 17 years researching,
attending conferences, networking, going to hearings, and taking
care of her children to help them heal.

Maureen encourages people to get all of the facts about
vaccinations in order to make the best decisions possible based
on the information at hand.

What I particularly like about what Maureen is going to share in
this interview is that she is going to reveal the processes and
steps that she took with her children to help them heal from
their vaccine injuries.

Maureen used a few holistic therapies that were effective and
she will tell us what they were.

She will also share information on the importance of the immune
system and how to build natural immunity.

I'm curious if she has a recommended protocol to prepare the
body's immune system for the actual vaccination shot.

Then there is the issue about mercury - and whether it is still
in vaccines (see link to Mike Adams article below).

Mike Adams from News Target is hot on this topic as well. He
makes a point in an article on this subject stating that although
mercury was taken out of many vaccines (and that is still
controversial) the substances that replaced it are still
neurotoxic.

In other words, he is saying that even though mercury may have
been taken out, it doesn't make vaccines safer.

You can attend this live interview with Maureen Drummond from
the comfort of your home. You also have the opportunity to ask
your question to Maureen during the Q & A period.

If you can't make the call because you have other commitments -
you can still register and get all of the information that will
be shared because as a registrant you will receive a
professionally recorded disc of the event mailed directly to your
home.

And guess what else? You can still ask a question if you are not
on the call live because once you register you will have an
opportunity to email in your question which I will ask on your
behalf - and you can hear your answer from her on the disc!

Learn more about this interview and how to register:
http://snipurl.com/hesitatetovaccinate

Here is an interesting fact: Autism is non-existent
among the Amish. Amish people do not receive vaccinations.

=================================
2. Essential Oil Tip: ImmuPower
=================================

ImmuPower is an excellent blend of the following oils to
strengthen the immune system:

--Cistus
--Frankincense
--Oregano
--Idaho Tansy
--Cumin
--Clove
--Hyssop
--Ravensara
--Mountain Savory

I call this blend my "big gun". This is my favorite oil to boost
immunity and one that I think we should all be using especially
during cold and flu season.

I like to use this at night before I go to sleep. The best way
to use this is by putting a few drops on the bottom of the feet
and rubbing both of the bottoms of the feet together (I don't
even put this oil on my hands, I just sprinkle it on my feet)
and then put on cotton socks.

Watch a 30 second video on how easy this is to do!

3. Success Tip: Freedom of Choice
==================================

Freedom is not merely the opportunity to do as one pleases;
neither is it merely the opportunity to choose between set
alternatives.

Freedom is, first of all, the chance to formulate
the available choices, to argue over them -- and then, the
opportunity to choose.

C. Wright Mills

=========================================
5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

I took my young son to the doctor for a routine physical.

All the way I had to reassure him that he would not be getting a
shot. He went through his eye exam, hearing test, etc.

The nurse came into the exam room and started to ask me routine
questions.

When she got to "Is he allergic to anything" my four-year-old
son stood up and said "YES, I'm allergic to shots!"

===============================================
1. Thyroid and Hemorrhoid: Something in Common?
===============================================

I had a patient several years ago who asked me if having a
hemorrhoid had anything to do with her thyroid.

I held back my laughter and then I said to my arrogant self "if
someone really doesn't know anatomy then that question makes
perfect sense!"

Both thyroid and hemorrhoid end in 'oid' (which is a suffix that
means "like", "resembling", or "in the image of" - but don't ask
me to address that one - thigh-roid???)

I kindly told her no and explained to her the difference between
those terms.

But even for people who know about the body there is still such a
lack of knowledge and understanding about the thyroid gland.

According to Karilee Shames Phd RN, and her physician
husband Richard, both of whom authored "Thyroid Power", even the
medical community lacks knowledge and understanding about this
very important gland in our body. They say that thyroid
conditions are under diagnosed and under treated.

January is Thyroid Awareness Month.

Over 60 million Americans have thyroid problems, and only 13
million are diagnosed.

In my "Green Tea with Marilee" interview with Karilee, she shared
the many signs and symptoms of a thyroid imbalance, some of which
are:

--fatigue
--depression
--overweight
--dry skin, hair, nails
--dry eye
--low libido
--high cholesterol
--infertility
--miscarriage
--difficulty in menopause

And that 80% of all thyroid sufferers are women.

Karilee described a typical scenario in our interview:

A woman goes in to see her physician and says "my hair
is falling out in clumps, my eyes are dry, my skin is
dry, my nails are brittle, I'm chilly all of the time,
I'm depressed, and I'm gaining weight while hardly eating."

What happens, Karilee says, is that the symptoms are usually
managed without the underlying issue explored and the patient
often ends up on anti-depressants and other unnecessary
medication which can make things worse.

Karilee talks about our toxic environment as a major culprit to
this epidemic condition. She also talks about natural approaches
that one can take to balance out the thyroid.

Dr. and Dr. Shames' "Thyroid Coaching" program is one of the most
progressive approaches in holisitic medicine that I've ever seen!

Want to learn more about what Karilee says about the Thyroid
Gland, it's role and it's care? http://snipurl.com/thyroidpower

Here is a You Tube video to show you one common person's
experience of balancing their thyroid levels with raw food.

===============================
2. Essential Oil Tip: Endoflex
===============================

Endoflex helps to balance the endocrine system.

The thyroid gland is part of the endocrine system.

Apply Endoflex on your foot reflex point for the thyroid, or
directly over the thyroid gland (at the base of the throat).

3. Success Tip: A Thyroid Poem
===============================

Butterfly

Shaped like a butterfly she sits within the neck

Wanting only to share her beauty throughout the body and
awakening all cells

Yet faithful to her messenger she will evolve with the
information sent

She can race forth spinning your entire being into a frenzy
awakening you in the midst of the night saturated with sweat and
palpitating heart

Or she can lull you to sleep and make you feel so melancholy or
down right

Depressed and angry for no particular reason

Whatever the effects her presence will be felt by every part of
your being

When feeling fine and neither up nor down do not think that she
has forgotten you

For at this time she simply sits on her throne, her wings spread
wide, as she escorts you through your journey

There have been cells that have turned against her, most of them
without the strength

To fully conquer her fortress

Other have penetrated her and have caused her great harm

But she continues to evolve with the force of such intrusions
while desperately

Attempting to maintain her exalted position

She will fight to save her fortress and keep her chamber safe,
but eventually she

Will give in to the information she receives and must subjugate
her will to the will of the informer

Although her wings may be clipped, she is still a beautiful
butterfly, she remains

Exalted, meaning only well for the body she inhabits and loyal to
her messenger

4.Recipe of the Week: Brown Rice with Kombu
=============================================

Sea veggies are known to be very supportive of the thyroid gland.

Kombu is a popular sea veggie that you can put in rice or soups.

Here is a basic brown rice recipe with kombu , and a 41 second
video I made to show you how to use it.
http://snipurl.com/ricewithkombu

1 cup organic brown rice
1 1/2 cups of spring water
pinch of sea salt
1 strip of kombu about one inch long
Two drops of sesame oil

--Wash the rice and place preferably in a pressure cooker.
--If not in a stainless steel pot, or earthenware.
--Add water, salt, kombu and oil. Cover.
--Bring to a boil on high fire, and then lower the
flame and place a heat diffuser underneath the pot.
--Cook for one hour. Do not uncover the rice while cooking.
--When its ready, remove the cover and stir softly with a wooden
spoon.
--Cover once again and let the rice sit about 5 minutes before
serving.

5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

"Now, what are you planning to do about that excess weight you're
carrying around?" the doctor asked the patient.

"I just can't seem to lose the weight," the patient said. "I must
have an overactive thyroid."

"The tests show your thyroid is perfectly normal," the doctor
said.

"It appears it's your fork that's overactive."

===============================
1. The Cough and The Colon
===============================

There are so many different reasons for coughing - such as
allergens, colds, flu or other infections, and in severe cases
tumors in the lung or cancer.

There are also varying characteristics to coughs such as tight
and dry, or loose and productive. Sometimes the types of coughs
will give an indication of the problem, but unless one has good
diagnostic testing the true underlying problem may be a mystery.

An area of the body that can contribute to coughing that is often
overlooked, and rarely tested for complaints of coughing, is the colon.

When someone's colon is sluggish or difficult to empty, such as
in constipation, or if they have a problem with candida (which is
an overgrowth of yeast due to an imbalance of bacteria in the
gut) then the body can often respond with a cough.

It helps to understand how this works by understanding that one
of the functions of the respiratory system is elimination. When
the primary eliminatory organs are not working at their optimum
(ie - colon), then the other elimination organs kick in to
help (ie - skin, lungs).

As a former colon therapist I can recall the many clients that I
had who were receiving colon hydrotherapy and experienced great
improvements in their breathing, sinus problems, and coughing.

Another helpful tip for understanding this connection is that in
Chinese Medicine the Lung and Large Intestine share the same
meridian. So, it is often seen in that health model, a clearing
up in one of those organs when the other is balanced out.

Here are some "Simple Solutions" that you can do at home for your
coughs (along with addressing your colon if you think that could
be a contributing factor):

Home Made Cough Syrups (three recipes)

Recipe One

--Lemon juice or a small amount of water with drop of lemon oil
--honey
--tiny dash of cayenne

Recipe Two

--1/2 c. honey
--1 tbsp. chopped garlic
--1 tsp. horseradish (fresh prepared)
Mix well. Take 1 or 2 teaspoons as needed. If mixture is too hot,
add more honey to taste.

Recipe Three

--1 c. molasses
--2 drops ginger essential oil
--2 drops peppermint essential oil
Mix all ingredients together.
Use 1 teaspoon at a time, every 4 hours.

Dry Cough Tea

--2 drops lemon
--3 drops eucalyptus radiata
--1 tsp agave
--4 oz. hot water

Sip Slowly

(Some of these might help address your colon too!)

Please note - all recipes with essential oils must be of
therapeutic grade, especially with internal use! (that is why I
only use Young Living!)

==================================================
2. Essential Oil Tip: Eucalyptus Steam Inhalation
==================================================

Eucalyptus Steam Inhalation

Pour hot water into a bowl
--Add 3 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
--Place your head about 12 inches above the bowl
--Cover your head with a towel - form a tent over the bowl
--Keep your eyes shut and breathe deeply through your nose for
1 to 2 minutes

If too hot raise the towel or open it slightly

distributor or go to: http://tinyurl.com/aenfp

3. Success Tip: Buddha
=========================

There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth

- not going all the way, and not starting.

5. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

A clerk in a small drugstore was not all that great a
salesman and could seldom find an item a customer wanted.

A customer walked in just after the clerk was warned by his boss
that another blunder would cost him his job.

The customer who walked in was coughing badly and asked the clerk
for the best cough syrup.

Try as he might the clerk could not find the cough syrup.

Remembering his boss' warning he sold the man a box of laxatives
and told him to take it all at once.

The customer did as instructed and then walked outside and leaned
against a lamp post.

The boss who had seen the whole episode came over to find out
what had happened.

"He wanted something for his cough but I couldn't find the cough
syrup.

I substituted laxatives and told him to take it all at
once," the clerk explained.

"Laxatives won't cure a cough!" the boss shouted angrily.

"Sure it will," the clerk said, pointing at the man leaning on
the lamp post.

"Look at him. He's afraid to cough."

1. Manifest from Your Bathtub
===============================

If you were one of the lucky Home Spa Lady readers on January 1st
to open your email with this recipe and use it to amplify your
intentions for 2008 then I can assure you you're well on your way
to attract what you want in this upcoming year! (If you didn't do
it then - you can still do it now - the recipe is below).

Bathing can offer us many things ~ stress reduction, relief from
muscular aches and pains, and other great health benefits as
well.

But did you know it can also help you attract what you want in
your life?

Might sound kooky, but there surely are laws of nature at work
here.

How many times I've heard from people "I get all of these great
ideas when I'm in the shower or tub."

Well that makes perfect sense to me - especially from an
energetic perspective!

Here are some reasons why:

--Water helps to conduct electricity, and your electrical body
(energy field) is where information is transduced. So if you've
beckoned information from any source including your Higher Self
(such as making decisions or gathering ideas) and are immersed in
water - you will get an influx of ideas and answers.

It is also valuable in the broadcasting of intentionality as in
"putting your request out to the universe".

--When you add salt (as in a salt bath) it increases
the flow of electrical current through water.

--When you add essential oils (therapeutic grade without
additives or fixatives as found in perfume grade oils) you have
the wonderful scent but more importantly you also are bringing in
life force. Life force has intelligence and responds to
intention.

--When you add your stones - such as river rocks or crystals -
there is grounding and expansion (depending on the stone).

--And yes, the relaxation helps induce the alpha brain wave state
which will help in giving and receiving information.

Here is the recipe for your "Manifestation Bath":

--Fill your bath the warmest water you can tolerate.
--Add 1 quart of Epsom salts and 2 tablespoons of baking soda.
--Add 1 tsp of Apple Cider vinegar.
--Your intention!

Optional ingredients - but highly recommended!

--Your favorite essential oil

--If you have a special stone such as an amethyst, place it in
the tub with you.

Soak in your bath with your intention for the New Year.
Think affirmatively.
Visualize the achievement of your goals.

2.Steam Bath Healing And Health Benefits
=========================================

The positive effects of steam bathing have been
understood for thousands of years.

Hippocrates found that fever could cure many
diseases, and steam baths and saunas have been
producing 'simulated' fevers ever since that time
and maybe even earlier than that.

There are excellent healing attributes of both
saunas and steam baths but the steam bath is
especially good for respiratory troubles like
bronchitis, asthma, and allergies the since it
offers an elevated moisture content.

The steam bath is also useful for cleaning and
toning the skin surface. The increased volume of
sweat that is induced by the steam bath and sauna
leaves the skin soft and supple while the bathers
are left feeling re-energized and recharged.

--Steam Baths - Special Benefits

As previously discussed, a steam bath is excellent
for respiratory ailments since steam can remove allergens and
mucus from the lungs.

Doctors have been advising that patients breathe
steam for various respiratory problems for a long
time now. The steam bath allows the user to inhale a larger
concentration of steam than by using a vaporizer.
This allows maximum benefits to those with breathing problems.

Steam has a soothing quality for the breathing passages
since it raises the moisture level in the lungs, throat and nose.

People that suffer from the problems of asthma or the common cold
will find they feel much better after indulging in a steam bath.

No matter how good the sauna bath might feel by relieving
symptoms it is not cure for respiratory diseases. The temporary
benefits of relief from the symptoms are good enough that many
sufferers go back to the steam bath again and again.

--Skin Benefits

A good sweat is excellent for healthy skin. Dermatologists
understand the benefits of steam to create a beautiful, healthy
glow.

Serious sweating washes the skin better than soap and water
since it unlocks the pores and lets deep-seated grime along with
dead cells to be washed out.

Also a steam bath increases the blood circulation to the skin
contributing to a healthy, glowing manifestation, you will
glisten!

--Pain Relief Benefits

Heat is a useful tool for management of muscular pain. Taking a
steam bath after a substantial bodily workout is an excellent
method of speeding up the healing progression of hurt tissues and
muscles. Heat allows the blood vessels to enlarge which boosts
the blood circulation, letting increased oxygen to arrive at
injured parts of the body. This has the twofold effect of pain
reduction and improving the healing speed.

--Relaxation Benefits

Deep sleep is one of the best medicinal ways to heal the body.
Our contemporary life is filled with daily stresses, and these
stresses will build up over time and can induce stress linked
illnesses such as high blood pressure and hypertension.

A sauna bath is a excellent method of unwinding and help relieve
the daily stresses. The heat of the sauna allows the muscles to
loosen up, and the steam makes available a comforting atmosphere
for calming the mind.

You will discover that a steam bath ahead of bedtime is an
excellent method of promoting a deep restful sleep. You come out
of the steam bath experiencing a relaxed and calm state. When you
take a steam bath on a regular basis, you will reap remarkable
benefits for your health and your state of mind.

So, go ahead and indulge yourself and reap the rewards of a sauna
bath. You will be pleased with the results of regular sauna baths
for your overall health and mental state.

6. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

A baby-boomer beauty with more looks than brains heard that milk
baths would make her beautiful.

She left a note for her milkman to leave 15 gallons of milk. When
the milkman read the note he felt there must be a mistake. He
thought she probably meant 1.5 gallons, so he knocked on the door
to clarify the point.

She came to the door and the milkman said, "I found your
note to leave 15 gallons of milk. Did you mean 1.5 gallons?"

The boomer said "I want 15 gallons. I'm going to fill my bathtub
up with milk and take a milk bath."

The milkman asked, "Pasteurized?"

She replied "No, just up to my neck."
