========================================
1. Can Tai Chi Prevent Shingles?
=========================================

Shingles is a nasty painful skin rash that is caused by a virus.

It is the same virus as the chicken pox virus. When you get
chickenpox as a child it can stay dormant in your system if your
immune system doesn't clear it out completely.

If it is "re-awakened" or "re-activated" in the adult years, it
is known as shingles. It's usually not serious unless the nerve
pathway that it affects remains extremely sensitized after the
breakout which is called neuralgia.

The cause of shingles is unclear. It is often blamed on a
weakened immune system. What is often associated with a breakout
of shingles is stress.

A UCLA study that was recently published in the Journal of
American Geriatrics suggested that the ancient martial art dance
of Tai Chi can prevent shingles.

The study included over 100 people between the ages of 59 and 86
who previously had chicken pox. Half of this group had tai chi
classes three times a week for three months and the other half
attended health education classes.

After six months the tai chi group had twice the immunity against
shingles as the other group.

2. My Own Story with Shingles
===============================

Three and a half years ago I rearranged my life to journey along
with, and care for, my mother who was battling kidney cancer.

Needless to say it was a stressful time in my life. But my
nursing background and my healing-at-home know how helped us both
adapt easier to the conditions with which Mom and I were dealing.

Mom didn't receive chemotherapy or radiation, but the oncologists
did recommend surgery. The day she was scheduled for surgery I
noticed a sore on my lower back - what I thought was a bug bite.
I also had radiating pain down my leg which felt like a sciatica.
Initially did not connect both of these symptoms.

This was one of those situations where my body had to inform me
about the level of stress I was experiencing, because I had no
clue. Stress does that to us - it can be very easy to go into
"function mode" where you keep pushing through.

When I found out that I had shingles, I immediately consulted two
texts that I frequently use: The Burton-Goldberg Alternative
Medicine Definitive Guide and the Essential Desk Reference for
the therapeutic use of essential oils. (I already know that many
of the essential oils that I have become familiar with over the
years have high anti-viral qualities.)

In the Alternative Medicine Guide there were several modalities
recommended for assisting the healing of shingles. I chose the
essential oil that was recommended in both books --
ravensara.

Ravensara comes out of Madagascar and is used there medicinally
for many ailments. The people of Madagascar hold it in high
regard.

I took an empty gel cap and placed 7 drops of ravensara essential
oil (from Young Living - I only use YL especially for internal
use) and took this capsule internally. I did this twice a day
for 21 days. I chose 21 days because that is typically the life
of an active virus.

I noticed a 90% diminishment in my symptoms within 36 hours. My
symptoms were entirely gone after that - to the point that I
questioned if I even had shingles.

About 8 days into this I forgot a morning dose. That was when I
questioned my diagnosis. I decided not to take the evening
capsule and sure enough, by the next day, my discomfort
reappeared.

I also did the other things I know to do like eat alkalinizing
foods and try to get more rest. And if I knew Tai Chi I would
have done that too!

If you have shingles and you choose to use a therapy similar to
this, I would recommend working along with your health care
provider. There are more and more physicians and advance practice
nurses becoming aware of alternative therapies especially where
there are no conventional treatments available, such as in the
case of shingles.

As mentioned in the previous article - shingles is not usually a
serious disorder but if the shingles occur around the eye it
could be threatening and you would want to involve an eye doctor

If you do not get support from your health care provider for the
choices that you make, then find a new health care provider.

4. Essential Oil Tip: Raindrop Therapy for Shingles
====================================================

Raindrop Therapy is an application method using therapeutic grade
essential oils layered on the spine.

There is a whole protocol for the basic technique of Raindrop
Therapy which was developed by Gary Young, founder of Young
Living Essential Oils.

A Raindrop regimen specific for shingles which comes out of the
Essential Desk Reference is:

--In Raindrop style layer 3-4 drops each of oregano, mountain
savory, and thyme along the spine.

--Apply 15-20 drops of V6 Oil (base massage oil) to the spine,
massage briefly over the other oils, then cover the skin with a
dry towel and apply a warm pack for 15-20 minutes).

NOTE: Be cautious about warming.

--If the back becomes too hot, remove the warm pack and add more
V6 Oil Complex to cool.

--Remove the warm pack and towel, then layer 4-8 drops each of
tea tree, elemi, and peppermint along the spine.

--Put the dry towel back over the skin and apply an ice pack for
30 minutes.

Health Care

Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2007 14:30:15 -0400

FAQ: Health Care

Q. What does HMO stand for?
A. This is actually a variation of the phrase, "Hey, Moe!" Its
roots go back to a concept pioneered by Doctor Moe Howard, who
discovered that a patient could be made to forget about the pain
in his foot if he was poked hard enough in the eyes. Modern
practice replaces the physical finger poke with hi-tech
equivalents such as voice mail and referral slips, but the result
remains the same.

Q. Do all diagnostic procedures require pre-certification?
A. No. Only those you need.

Q. I just joined a new HMO. How difficult will it be to choose
the doctor I want?
A. Just slightly more difficult than choosing your parents. Your
insurer will provide you with a book listing all the doctors who
were participating in the plan at the time the information was
gathered. These doctors basically fall into two categories --
those who are no longer accepting new patients, and those who
will see you but are no longer part of the plan. But don't worry
-- the remaining doctor who is still in the plan and accepting
new patients has an office just a half day's drive away!

Q. What are pre-existing conditions?
A. This is a phrase used by the grammatically challenged when
they want to talk about existing conditions. Unfortunately, we
appear to be pre-stuck with it.

Q. Well, can I get coverage for my pre-existing conditions?
A. Certainly, as long as they don't require any treatment.

Q. What happens if I want to try alternative forms of medicine?
A. You'll need to find alternative forms of payment.

Q. My pharmacy plan only covers generic drugs, but I need the
name brand. I tried the generic medication, but it gave me a
stomach ache. What should I do?
A. Poke yourself in the eye.

Q. I have an 80/20 plan with a $200 deductible and a $2,000
yearly cap. My insurer reimbursed the doctor for my out-patient
surgery, but I'd already paid my bill. What should I do?
A. You have two choices. Your doctor can sign the reimbursement
check over to you, or you can ask him to invest the money for you
in one of those great offers that only doctors and dentists hear
about, like windmill farms or frog hatcheries.

Q. What should I do if I get sick while traveling?
A. Try sitting in a different part of the bus.

Q. No, I mean what if I'm away from home and I get sick?
A. You really shouldn't do that. You'll have a hard time seeing
your primary care physician. It's best to wait until you return,
and then get sick.

Q. I think I need to see a specialist, but my doctor insists he
can handle my problem. Can a general practitioner really perform
a heart transplant right in his office?
A. Hard to say, but considering that all you're risking is the
$10 co-payment, there's no harm giving him a shot at it.

Q. What accounts for the largest portion of health care costs?
A. Doctors trying to recoup their investment losses.

Q. Will health care be any different in the next century?
A. No, but if you call right now, you might get an appointment by
then.

1. Margarine ~ One Molecule Away From Plastic
----------------------------------------------
There are fats that can kill us and fats that can heal us. Wouldn't it be good to know which is which?

For decades people have been eating margarine thinking that it was much better for health than butter. I remember when I was a nurse working in the Intensive Care Unit. Our cardiac patients were always given margarine instead of butter because it "is better for your heart and cholesterol levels". I haven't been around a hospital or cardiology practices for awhile (thank goodness!) but I imagine that is still a common belief and practice.

It's time to set the record straight, and there is no better person to do that than the world's leading authority on fats. Dr. Udo Erasmus, author of "Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill" tells us which fats and oils to eat with our health in mind. He encourages us to avoid synthetic molecules in our foods. But then he also tell us that one tablespoon of regular cooking oil bought from a supermarket has 60 trillion unnatural molecules. So what are the best oils and fats to eat?

I use butter in my diet, and I cook with coconut oil and olive oil. I take fish oils and flax. I want to know if what Udo thinks about that.

Do you want to know if your fat intake is healthy?

This coming Friday, April 20th, Udo will answer these questions, and more, in a "Green Tea with Marilee" teleseminar interview. You can join us for the entire 70 plus minutes we will be together, and you can ask him your own personal questions at the end of the interview.

Here are some of the things he will be covering as it is related to the "good fat/bad fat" issue: How (and which) good fats can:

--Provide more energy and stamina
--Improve sleep
--Balance mood
--Balance hormones
--Decrease body fat
--Soften skin
--Improve concentration
--Decrease cardiovascular risk problems

2.Flaxseeds As Natural Remedy for Eczema
=========================================
By Evelyn Lim
You may wish to consider including flaxseeds in your diet as an eczema natural remedy. Flaxseeds contain essential fatty acids like Omega 3, Omega 6 and alpha linolenic acid that can add and retain skin moisture and suppleness to your skin. These nutrients are great for skin that is especially prone to dryness and inflammation. Hence, they would highly benefit eczema skin conditions.

If you have been trying to deal with your eczema for quite sometime now, you may have tried numerous lotions and even medicines that are recommended by your physician. Most medicines have side effects. Taking them on a long term basis and becoming reliant on them is not recommended. Instead, healing yourself from the inside in terms of good nutrition issomething worth pursuing since this can hardly bring any adverse reactions.

It is not hard to imagine that if your body lacks certain essential vitamins and nutrients for good skin, you are likely to experience symptoms like acne or eczema. The most active ingredient of flaxseed is the presence of Omega3. This eczema natural remedy comprises of 1/3 oil. The other 2/3 parts include protein, fiber, lignans and mucilage. Fiber and mucilage are responsible for cleaning your colon of any toxic materials and body wastes while protein can give your body the sufficient amount of amino acid it needs.

Lignans is one of the potent ingredients, with anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties that can help fight off bad bacteria, often known to worsen eczema. You can buy various forms of flaxseeds at your local health store. They come as flax seeds or flaxseed oil. If you opt to consume flax seeds, grind them before eating or adding them to your food. If you do not grind them, your body will find it hard to absorb them.

You can also consume flaxseed oil as it is or add it to your drink. If you think that you cannot regularly add natural source of essential fatty acid into your daily diet, you might as well use flaxseed oil supplements to give your body the sufficient amount of Omega 3, Omega 6 and other essential fatty acids that it needs.
Simply take two capsules of flaxseed oil supplementsper day. As an eczema natural remedy, you really want to consume what is of high quality for healthy skin. This may mean that you may have to pay more for good supplies.

An eczema sufferer for several years, Evelyn Lim now writes reviews on eczema natural remedies and skin care products. Find out how she recently got herself treated in her newsletter here at www.eczematreatmentsecrets.com

3. Essential Oil Tip: Beat the Flu
====================================
In our household Thyme oil is a "big gun" for the flu. Diffusing thyme oil is helpful when the flu is spreading through the family, but the smell can be strong. A good way to minimize the effects of this strong smell is to bake a chicken with the herbs thyme and rosemary at the same time!

1. Eat Oil to Get Rid of Fat
-----------------------------

I can hear you now "Is she serious? Eat fat so you can lose it?"

Yup, I am serious, and I learned about it from the world's leading expert. There's even a technical term for how this happens, it's called "thermo genesis".
This means the body will naturally produce more heat to burn more calories.

Now, don't worry ladies, if heat production doesn't appeal to you. Maybe your heating system is on full blast these days with hot flashes. This oil won't make you get hotter. As a matter of fact, it most likely will regulate your thermostat in that department because it can regulate hormones too!

Now, I must make an important point here. I am not talking about essential oils - they have another way of working and I've written about that before.

The oils that I'm talking about here are "fatty oils". That's why we say it is ironic because "we eat it to lose it".

Here is all you have to do to make this happen:

You take a few spoonfuls of this delish oil (I put mine in my shake or I may sprinkle on cottage cheese or in yogurt) once ortwice a day. That's it!

I got so excited about this when I heard all of the benefits of this oil. I got even more excited from my own personal experience.

And its as easy as going to your local health food store and grabbing it off the store shelf (of course you have to pay for it!)

But don't just take my word for this. I want you to get the information like I did - right from the horse's mouth.

I created an opportunity for you to hear him live right from the comfort of your own home. You will hear the world authority on this subject speak about how healthy fats can:

--Aid in weight reduction
--Regulate organs and glands
--Lower risk for heart disease
--Improve digestion
--Keep bones strong
--Ease PMS
--Produce beautiful skin, hair, and nails
--Strengthen immune system
--Increase energy, performance, and stamina

Known as the "Father of Flax", Udo Erasmus, author of "Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill" is presenting specifically for YOU - the "Home Spa Lady Tips of the Week" Subscriber!

And, the good part is that you can ask him your specific questions!

All you have to do is dial a phone number.

Udo is wonderful to listen to. . . when I first heard him, I thought he was going to talk all scientific - was I surprised! This man has the most incredible philosophical mind. The only word I can think of when I heard him speak is "beautiful". His heart and spirit truly come through

He shares his brilliant information with creative thought. He explains things in an easy to understand way as to why our bodies react so well to these essential fatty acids, and why we all need them.

I highly suggest you take advantage of this opportunity. Join me on Friday April 20th for 90 minutes of Udo at your access. You will even have an opportunity to ask him questions!

If that date doesn't work for you I suggest you register anyway because everyone who registers will receive a recorded CD version of this event mailed directly to their home.

2. How Your Feet Affect Your Life
==================================

Did you ever have your feet rubbed and your body melts like butter. . . and all of a sudden life seems better?

Feet do more for us than most people realize.

Sure, they carry us around all of the time, but their importance is much more than just supporting our weight.

Some say that our feet are an entry way into the health status of our entire body.

The Egyptians were on this in a big way. As a matter of fact, manipulating the feet was a way to help heal the body during Egyptian times.

Today this Egyptian model of feeling good and healing through the feet is re-emerging with intense popularity.

Known as "Foot Reflexology", the science and art of applying pressure to points in the feet to balance the body can be done by anyone anywhere. Its a great tool to have in your "Home Spa" toolbox to help you or your family member feel better when you are feeling lousy.

For example, there are points to work on the feet if you have a headache, sinus problems, or an upset stomach.

Its not that difficult to learn to do it for yourself or your loved ones (and yes, you can do it to yourself).

However, if you want to do it professionally in a spa or wellness center, or even in your own practice I would recommend the leading authority on Reflexology and her programs located inNew York City and Boca Raton Florida.

Laura Norman, author of "Feet First: A Guide to Reflexology", has an excellent certificate program in Reflexology.

I interviewed Laura on a "Green Tea with Marilee" Teleseminar and she shared wonderful information about what Reflexology is, how it works, what it can do for the body and the mind, and how you can learn how to do it - whether for yourself or to do it professionally.

=============================================
3. The Best Aromatherapy Education Credential
=============================================

Last week I wrote about the power of the Holy Oils from Scripture. It seemed appropriate because of the holiday week.

Much of what I learned came from an excellent course that is offered nationally from the Institute of Spiritual Healing and Aromatherapy (formerly known as Healing Touch Spiritual Ministry).

This course, put together by Linda L. Smith, author of "Healing Oils, Healing Hands", leads to a Certification in Aromatherapy. This is a great credential that is endorsed by the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA).

You can hear Linda share some of the great history behind aromatherapy and how it can be used today, and how you can become certified as an Aromatherapist - go to: http://tinyurl.com/2yyhxv

====================================
4. Write Articles for Your Industry
====================================

I haven't done a survey yet to find out who you, my "Home Spa Lady Tips of the Week" reader, really are. . . but I have a hunch that many of you are:

--Over 40 years old
--Female
--Forward thinkers
--Holistically oriented
--Take a few extra steps in your life to take care of yourself (or at least think about it!) more than most people
--Have developed a level of expertise in your career
--Are somewhat recognized as an expert and may not be willing to claim it fully
--Are interested in becoming more financially independent and would love to weave your knowledge into a way to make money

Well, if my hunch is right (only you know that) - Heck! even if my hunch is not right. . .I would like to suggest a really great course so you can use your great knowledge and learn how to make money with it - even if you are still working in a career you love and plan to stay there!

If you don't already know, I offer a course to teach people how to take their areas of expertise and turn it into either cash or a new career. I bring the top experts in to teach the students enrolled in my program how they can take what they know and make it available to the masses through the internet and other venues.

That class is closed now because we are well under way into our fourth of eight weeks (not to worry, it will be offered again in the future - stay tuned).

However, one of the experts I bring in (who teaches people how to establish themselves as experts in their industry by writing articles), is offering a great course that you should jump on!

He has a few special offers for people in my database (that's YOU), so if you want to take advantage of this click here: http://tinyurl.com/2wjbpr

8. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

Dear IRS,

Enclosed is my 2006 tax return showing that I owe $3,407.00 in axes.

Please note the attached article from USA Today newspaper, wherein you will see the Pentagon is paying $171.50 for hammers and NASA has paid $600.00 per toilet seat.

Accordingly, I am enclosing four(4) toilet seats (value: $2,400.00) and six(6) hammers (value: $1,029.00), bringing my total remitted to $3,429.00.

Please apply the overpayment of $22.00 to the "Presidential Election Fund" as noted on my return. You can do this inexpensively by sending the candidate of your choice one(1) 1.5" Phillips Head screw (see aforementioned article from USA Today newspaper detailing how H.U.D. pays $22.00 each for 1.5" Phillips Head screws). One screw is enclosed for your convenience.

It has been a pleasure to pay my tax bill this year, and I look forward to paying it again next year.

Sincerely,
A Satisfied Taxpayer

1. Holy Oils for Rejuvenation
------------------------------

There are twelve essential oils from Ancient Scripture that have unique properties that help to rejuvenate the body.

Essential oils were man's first medicine. They have been found through scientific study to have the following abilities:

--Immediately deliver more oxygen to the body
--Clean up and detoxify each cell in the body
--Help to balance body systems
--Regenerate tissue
--Increase life force / vital energy
--Assist in getting vital nutrients into cells
The Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture are:

--Frankincense
--Sandalwood
--Cedarwood
--Cypress
--Myrrh
--Hyssop
--Myrtle
--Galbanum
--Cistus
--Spikenard
--Cassia
--Onycha

These oils have been known to treat many conditions such as:

--Arthritis
--Respiratory infections
--Inflammation
--Muscular aches and pains
--Viral infections
--Fever
--Gout
--Rheumatism
--Cancer
--Allergies
--Skin disorders

During ancient Egyptian times certain essential oils were used to embalm dead bodies. This is because of their ability to preserve human tissue.

I often think that if these oils can preserve human tissue of the deceased then they surely can have a similar effect on living tissue!

Looking younger longer is a side effect of using these essential oils on an ongoing basis. I've seen evidence of this already in the 10 years that I have been associating with people who use these on a consistent basis.

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways such as:

--Inhalation
--Topical application (hot oils should be diluted)
--Diffusing
--Internally (only therapeutic-grade)

The most powerful ways to use the Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture for rejuvenating the body and improving one's state of health is described in the book "Healing Oils, Healing Hands" by Linda L. Smith.

In her book, Linda writes about the use of oils with hands on healing and the application process of "anointing".

I created a CD with Linda that shares how the essential oils were used for healing and beauty all throughout antiquity. Linda also talks about how anointing with essential oils enhance techniques like acupuncture, massage, Reiki and Healing Touch, and many other forms of energetic healing.

Linda also describes her Certification Program in Aromatherapy and how you can become Certified as an Aromatherapist.

2. Natural Dyes for Your Easter Eggs
======================================

Dyeing eggs with natural substances doesn't take much more time than if you used commercial coloring kits - and it's alot more fun.

You can be very creative with what is in your kitchen already and your Easter eggs can come out very unique.

Here are the colors and the substance that makes those colors.

These are either a spice, fruit, vegetable, or foodstuff that will color your Easter in a very safe way:

--Red or Pink: Red beets, cranberries, frozen raspberries
--Light Green: Spinach leaves
--Yellow: Ground Cumin, Ground Tumeric, Shredded carrots
--Blue: Blueberries, blackberries, red cabbage leaves, grape juice
--Purple: Red Zinger® tea (by Celestial Seasonings)
--Brown: Brewed coffee

Here's how to make your dye:

Ingredients:

--1 Tbsp. spice or 4 c. chopped fruit or vegetable, or more
--4 c. water, or more
--2 Tbsp. white vinegar (per 4 c. water)

Directions:

--Combine spice or foodstuff with water and vinegar.
--Bring to a boil, then simmer for 15 to 30 minutes.

Eggs can be colored and cooked in the dye while it is being prepared. Or, they can be hard-cooked in advance, then dipped into the prepared dye (which can be either cold or hot).

7. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================

All I Need to Know About Life I Learned from the Easter Bunny

Don't put all of your eggs in one basket.
Walk softly and carry a big carrot.
Everyone needs a friend who is all ears.
There's no such thing as too much candy.
All work and no play can make you a basket case.
A cute little tail attracts a lot of attention.
Everyone is entitled to a bad hare day.
Let happy thoughts multiply like rabbits.
Some body parts should be floppy.
Keep your paws off other people's jellybeans.
The grass is always greener in someone else's basket.
An Easter bonnet can tame even the wildest hare.
To show your true colors you have to come out of your shell.
The best things in life are still sweet and gooey!
