1. Make "Super Bowl" a "Super Soul" Sunday
=============================================
There are some people who have absolutely no interest in the Super Bowl football game this Sunday. I'm one of those people, although I do like to be supportive of the gang in front of the TV yelling and screaming as if they can move those little men and the flying football on the screen. And, of course, it's always fun to have a reason for a party. But the Super Bowl can give the "less-than-sports fan" a reason to have a day, totally separate and apart from the rest of the gang.

"Super Bowl Sunday" can turn into "Super Soul Sunday" by whipping up face masks and spa cuisine for yourself as you prepare the chicken wings and chili for the game. It's an opportunity to have a soulful day of self-care and pampering in your own bath and bedroom - far away from the beef and beer.

Here's how to set up your Super Soul Haven:
--Purchase a great CD for your player or download to your MP3/ipod (I highly recommended Ken Townshend's music http://www.kentownshend.com)
--Make sure you have a headset for your music (to block out the yelling at the quarterback)
--Prepare your bath ingredients: Bath gel base and one of the following essential oils:

lavender
chamomile
geranium

--Prepare your facial ingredients
1/3 c of fast cook oatmeal with 1/2 c water and cook for 1-3 min ¼ cup of honey added to cool oatmeal mixture - place in bowl

--Create a colorful dish of raw vegetables and a dip (Simply Organic is a great dip: http://www.frontiercoop.com)

--Brew some green tea - a beverage that often accompanies baths in Japan. After the wings are served - run your bath, take your tray of veggies and tea with you and slip into your Super Soul Haven for a great spa!
======================
2. Take a Beer Bath
======================
If you are not in the mood for an essential oil bath, and you would like to imbibe with your sports family but in your own spa-like way, take a bath in beer rather than drink it! Crack open a six pack of your favorite German brew and pour it into your tub for a healing experience. Since about 1997, Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic have had breweries and spas offer wellness based beer baths to promote good health. Hedwig Bauer, owner of the Land hotel Moorhof in rustic Franking, Austria (http://www.moorhof.com) where they offer beer spa treatments, says "Beer is very good for the skin, because of the vitamins and the yeast."

2. Essential Oil Video Tip: Freshen Your Laundry
===================================================
Place a few drops of your favorite essential oil on a wet cloth and throw in your dryer with your clothes to deodorize and freshen your laundry. Check out this one minute video to see how to do it: http://tinyurl.com/38czzl

5.Recipe of the Week: Super Bowl Veggie Chili
==============================================
Notice this touch of chocolate! Only for the daring!
CAFE BRENDA BLACK BEAN VEGETABLE CHILI
2 1/2 cups dried black beans
1 large onion, chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 large carrots, diced
2 ribs celery, chopped
1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
2 to 3 jalapeño peppers, seeded and minced
1 tablespoon minced fresh marjoram or
1 teaspoon dried
1 tablespoon minced fresh oregano or
1 teaspoon dried Mexican
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 teaspoon crushed coriander seeds
1 1/2 teaspoons salt juice of 1/2 lemon
1 ounce unsweetened chocolate
1 cup raw pumpkin seeds soy sauce sour cream, optional
1 1/2 cups grated Cheddar cheese, optional

Pick over the black beans, then soak them in 8 cups of water for 6 to 8 hours. Drain them and cook in 8 cups of water until tender, about 1 hour. Drain, reserving all the cooking liquid. In a large skillet, sauté the onion in the oil until soft. Add the garlic, carrots, and celery; sauté 3 minutes. Add the bell pepper and jalapeño peppers; sauté 3 to 5 minutes longer.Combine the sautéed vegetables and cooked beans in a large pot. Add the herbs, spices, salt, lemon juice, and chocolate. Pour in about 1 1/2 cups of the reserved cooking liquid or as needed to keep the chili from drying up. Simmer 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. As the chili simmers, place the pumpkin seeds in a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Dry-toast them, stirring and tossing until the seeds glisten and begin to brown. Sprinkle a few drops of soy sauce on them and allow them to cool. Serve in bowls with the pumpkin seeds sprinkled on top. Add sour cream and/or grated cheese, if desired. Serves 8 to 10.

"Who Knew?"
--Panama hats are actually made in Ecuador.
--The Beach Boys toyed with the idea of calling themselves the Pendletons, thinking they might get free T-shirts from the clothing manufacturer.
--Chubby Checker (born Ernest Evans) picked his stage name in honor of his idol, Fats Domino.
--Whistler selected his most famous model, his mother, when the model he intended to paint didn't show up for the appointment.
--The White House was originally grey. It was whitewashed to cover ire damage caused by the British in the War of 1812.
--While his wife spent long hours doing the actual posing, the model for the Statue of Liberty was Charlotte Bartholdi, mother of Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the French sculptor who designed it.
--Sunglasses date back to 15th century China, where they were worn by judges to conceal their expressions while presiding overcourt.
--Director Wes Craven named Freddy Krueger after a kid who bullied him in school.

1. Drive In The Luxury of Lavender
=============================================
You may not believe this one. I hardly do. But it's for real. Scented Tires for your car: Lavender, orange, jasmine. And you wonder if the "aromatherapy industry" is growing?

This is only the beginning. KUMHO introduces the world's first "Aroma Tire" for select cars. The first ever fragrance tire is called "ECSTA DX". If you are a woman who drives either a Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Subaru Outback, Chrysler Sebring or Ford Taurus, then you are the target market. These are going to be available at discount tire stores found through http://www.kumhotireusa.com, or http://www.tirerack.com will ship them to you for you to have installed. The tires can be delivered and affixed to passenger vehicles at a KUMHO tire dealer. They cost between $119 and $138 each.

2. Essential Oil Tip: Deodorize Your Car
===============================================
Toss out that hanging evergreen tree from your car! It's stinky and unhealthy to smell (let alone unsightly). Here's a great way to spread a wonderful "good-for-you" scent in your car. Take a kleenex folded several times and slip it into the dashboard vent. Sprinkle one of your favorite oils on it to dowse your car with healthy, organic scents. My favorites for this are Purification (YL Blend) or Peppermint(YL has the best peppermint!). There's another way to do this without having the kleenexes in your vent - watch the video of Home Spa Lady (and Home Spa Dog Prin) demonstrate how to diffuse essential oils easily in your car! 4. Silly News: Dog Helps Start Car
====================================
Last September in England a patrolman rescued a woman motorist by getting her car started using her dog. Juliette Piesley, 39, had changed the battery in her electronic key but then was unable to start her car. When the patrolman arrived at the scene he found its immobilizer chip was missing. Ms Piesley said her dog George had eaten something. They both realized it was the chip. They had to put the dog in the front seat to get the car started. Juliette had to take her dog, George, with her to drive her car until things took their natural course. ========================================
5.Recipe of the Week: Eating in the Car
========================================
It's the epitome of "Mindless Eating", but we all do it at one time or another. Some say it is more dangerous than talking on the cell phone. But if you must, here are some healthy food suggestions that are easy, easily disposable, and will keep you away from those unhealthy drive-thrus!

--Bananas
--Yogurt (don't forget plastic spoon)
--Protein Bars (try the Wolfberry Crisps from YL!)
--Box of raisins
--Trail Mix in a baggie
--Protein Drink

1. Someone's Trying to S(m)ell You Something
=============================================
It's obvious that I love essential oils. I believe in the rejuvenating and healing properties of high quality therapeutic oils. And I love sharing them with other people - personally and professionally.

That doesn't mean that I love smells, nor do I want odors to permeate all aspects of my life. I particularly don't want imposed scents invading my nasal passages without my permission, especially when they are man-made and petrochemically-based, and most scents are. But I, like zillions of others who read newspapers and magazines daily, will be having the experience of surprise scents wafting up from our reading material very soon.

The "smell" industry is coming to get us, and they're coming fast. Why not? We're a captive audience with pages that can hold scent right under our nose. What great opportunity for advertising. Well, I'm freaking out. I already have a hard time walking through perfume counters in department stores. And don't even talk to me about Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I get a headache every time I'm in that place from the "perfume-grade" aromatherapy items that line just about every aisle. My friends don't understand this about me. They say "how can you feel that way when 'aromatherapy' is a main thrust of what you do?"

I remind them "not all aromas are therapeutic", as a matter of fact most of the identifiable smells we have are man-made and petrochemically based. That is one of the main reasons why I rarely use the word "aromatherapy" to describe what I do. Instead of saying that I do "aromatherapy", I say that I work with the "use of therapeutic grade essential oils". There is a huge difference. As a matter of fact, I inhale my therapeutic oils to counteract the effects of these artificial scents.

In the past few years we have seen an increased interest in "smellingness" as evidenced by the popularity of "aromatherapy". Large corporations are sniffing out advertising opportunities that this can offer. In 2006 companies spent $80 million on scent related marketing in 2006. And its only the beginning. Here's some examples:

--Kraft Foods sent a holiday issue with "rub and smell" ads for Jell-O and Chips Ahoy.
--Verizon Wireless had chocolate "scent strips" to promote a mobile phone and music player called Chocolate.
--Diet Pepsi has their ads, coupons, and store signs smelling like their new soft drink's fruit and vanilla fragrance.

"Scent Marketing" is catching on. Darn. And I was so glad when my invoices from Macy's and Strawbridges stopped wearing those headache-causing perfumes. Oh well. What does this all mean (besides the consideration of dumping the papers and reading everything online?) Well for me it just means more education is necessary. We need to let people know that there is a difference in an "aromatherapy" marketing venture and the therapeutic use of essential oils for health, healing, and beauty. I hope you join me in that effort.

3. Essential Oil Tip: Sea Sickness
===================================
Since this issue already has a personal tone (like my rant in the title article), I'm going to keep it a bit personal. I'm writing this issue aboard a wonderful cruise ship visiting ports in the Western Caribbean. I've never taken a cruise before, and I never wanted to. But I won this cruise so I decided to go for it.

One of my big concerns was getting sea sick. I did not want that horrible experience of nausea and vomiting and the feeling that comes with the motion sickness. I made sure I was going to be well prepared and packed the essential oil indicated for sea sickness (nausea) in my First Aid Essential Oil Kit. That essential oil is ginger. Ginger is great for nausea and motion sickness.Thank goodness I haven't needed it (I'm also wearing a Bio Band that works on an acupuncture point indicated for the same).

But if I were to use it, this is how I would:
--Inhalation
--Place a drop in a small glass of water and drink it
--Make ginger tea by using hot water
--Dilute the ginger essential oil with a little massage oil and put it on the bottom of the feet

Order your essential oils from your Young Livingdistributor or by going to Young Living's Website

5. Success Tip: Dale Carnegie

6.Recipe of the Week: Caribbean Salad Dressing
==============================================
This recipe comes from chef Ryan Roush at Cafe Mariposa on Utila, The Bay Islands of Honduras deep in the Caribbean. He says this is great on a salad with fruit!

--1 12 oz can pineapple juice
--4 tablespoons sesame seed oil
--2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
--2 tablespoons fresh parsley (or 1 tablespoon dried)
--1/2 teaspoon rosemary
--1/2 teaspoon lemon pepper
--1/8 teaspoon salt
--Mix all ingredients in an airtight container with lid.
--Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
--No refrigeration necessary.
--Must be mixed well each time served, as the ingredients separate with the oils.

7. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================
An ambitious yuppie finally decided to pull himself away from his work and take a vacation. He booked a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life --at least for a while. Caught in a hurricane his ship went down and was lost instantly. The man found himself swept onto the shore of a deserted island. Only bananas and coconuts adorned the trees. Being familiar only with the comforts of modern life he was lost on what to do. For the next four months he ate bananas, drank coconut juice, longed for his old life, and fixed his gaze on the sea, hoping to spot a rescue ship.

One day, as he was lying on the beach, he spotted movement out of the corner of his eye. It was a rowboat, and in it was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen. She rowed up to him. In disbelief, he asked her: "Where did you come from? How did you get here?" "I rowed from the other side of the island," she said. "I landed here when my cruise ship sank." "Amazing," he said, "I didn't know anyone else had survived. How many of you are there? You were really lucky to have a rowboat wash up with you." "It's only me," she said, "and the rowboat didn't wash up; nothing did."

He was confused, "Then how did you get the rowboat?" "Oh, simple," replied the woman. "I made it out of raw material that I found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum-tree branches, I wove the bottom from palm branches, and the sides and stern came from a eucalyptus tree." "But, but, that's impossible," stuttered the man. "You had no tools or hardware -- how did you manage?" "Oh, that was no problem," the woman said. "On the south side ofthe island, there is a very unusual strata of exposed alluvial rock. I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into forgeable ductile iron. I used that for tools, and used the tools to make the hardware. But enough of that. Where do you live?"

Sheepishly, the man confessed that he had been sleeping on the beach the whole time. "Well, let's row over to my place, then," she said. After a few minutes of rowing, she docked the boat at a small wharf. As the man looked onto shore, he nearly fell out of the boat. Before him was a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman tied up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man could only stare ahead, dumbstruck. As they walked into the house, she said casually, "It's not much, but I call it home. Sit down, please; would you like to have a drink?" "No, no, thank you," he said, still dazed. "I can't take any more coconut juice." "It's not coconut juice," the woman replied. "I have a still. How about a pina colada?"

Trying to hide his continued amazement, the man accepted, and they sat down on her couch to talk. After they had exchanged their stories, the woman announced, "I'm going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There is a razor upstairs in the cabinet in the bathroom."

No longer questioning anything, the man went into the bathroom. There in the cabinet was a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to a hollow-ground edge were fastened to its tip, inside a swivel mechanism. "This woman is amazing," he mused. "What next?"

When he returned, the woman greeted him wearing nothing but vines -- strategically positioned -- and smelling faintly of gardenias. She beckoned for him to sit down next to her. "Tell me," she began suggestively, sitting closer to him, "We've been out here for a very long time. There's something I'm sure you really feel like doing right now, something you've been wanting to do for all these months? You know..."She stared into his eyes. He couldn't believe what he was hearing: "You mean...," he replied, "I can check my e-mail from here?"

1. Natural Remedies for Overwhelm and Fear
===========================================

Stress is the norm these days.

Somehow people have adapted to hectic lifestyles with more things to do and less time to do them in. Our attempts now are to avoid the serious side of stress -overwhelm and fear.

We can do natural things on a daily basis at home to prevent getting into this state - or allay the problems that arise when overwhelm and fear do take over.

Many times overwhelm and fear originate from the physical body, and have nothing to do with emotional or mental issues. We would call this "metabolic in origin".

In Chinese medicine fear is associated with the kidneys. When there is a lack of "chi", "energy", or "vital force" in the kidneys, the feeling of fear can result.

If you have ever had any experiences of irrational fear, or feeling overwhelmed when things don't seem to warrant it, you might have low "kidney chi" or stressed kidneys.

Besides overwhelm and fear, there are other things that low "kidney chi" can create in the body:

--Bags under the eyes
--Always feeling cold
--Low back aches (area over the kidneys)
--Confusion, mental fog
--Difficulty sleeping
--Feeling insecure

Along with a prolonged state of stress, there are many foods that negatively impact the kidneys. They are:

--Sweets
--Dairy
--Too much salt
--Too many cold foods (or not eating enough hot foods)
--Caffeine

We need to take care of our kidneys (who ever thinks of that?), especially during the winter months when they are more prone to stress than any other time of year.

Here are simple, nurturing, at-home, remedies that can help support your kidneys:

--Warm your kidneys

Keep your back warm at all times. You may want to take a "home-spa" break and lay on your bed or sofa with a hot water bottle under your back. A hot water bottle is better than a heating pad because it doesn't emit electrical frequencies.

--Take a healing salt bath

For these baths you want to use Sodium Chloride and not Epsom Salts (Epsom Salts are magnesium sulfate)

This may sound like alot of salt but its because the goal here is to affect the osmotic pressure. The high salt content in the water can facilitate excess toxic body fluids to leave the body through the skin and take the work load off of the kidneys: Add 2-3 pounds of Sodium Chloride (some people use watersoftener salt) to 24 gallons of warm, but not too hot, bath tubwater.

--Walk barefoot in the early morning dew for 5 minutes

--Exercise

--Eat the following foods: aduki beans, winter squash, brownrice, dark leafy greens

--Use these Young Living Products: K & B Herbal tincture (internally), Juniper essential oil (topically over kidney areaor on the kidney reflex area of the foot)

2. Eight Tips to Handle Fear
=============================

Eight Practical Tips - From Prevention Magazine

--It doesn't matter why you're scared. Stop trying to figure it out.
--Learn about the thing you fear.
--Train. Slowly building familiarity with a scary subject makes it more manageable.
--If there's something you're afraid of, find someone who is not afraid of that thing and spend time with that person.
--Talk about it.
--Play mind games with yourself. If you're afraid of speaking in front of groups, it's probably because you think the audience is going to judge you. Try imagining the audience members naked -- being the only clothed person in the room puts you in the position of judgment.
--Stop looking at the grand scheme. Think only about each successive step.
--Seek help

1. Healing Foods - 2007 Trend
==============================
"We're at a point where there is a major intersection of health, wellness, and luxury." Michael Whiteman, Food Consultant.

In one of last week's issues of USA Today Healing Foods were noted as an upcoming trend for 2007. Whiteman, of Joseph Baum & Michael Whiteman Food and Restaurant Consulting, was also quoted as saying: "People are willing to pay premium prices to indulge in foods that they think will make them live longer or lose weight or just add to their psychological well-being. By indulgence, I mean premium-price sodas that make you lose weight, yogurts that make your skin softer, vitamin-enriched beer, ice creams with immune boosting ingredients, rainforest 'super fruits' and their extracts".

I already notice how I fall into that category of people paying higher prices for healthier foods. One of my new favorites is the new Kombucha Wonder Drink. I treat myself to it only occasionally (because I can't find it in many stores). It's a carbonated drink - and I'm still a sucker for carbonation. This carbonation is from a natural fermentation process from the kombucha mushroom, which is known to be a healing food. But my favorite remains the Ningxia Red juice that has as its primary ingredient Lycium barbarum or "wolfberry" (and also known as Himalayan Goji - not to be confused with the commercial Himalayan Goji juice). And I love how I can get it delivered to my door.

Lycium barbarum is a fruit known as wolfberry. It has been used in Asian medicine for centuries. People who have had a diet high in wolfberry have lived well over 100 years with good vision, sharp minds, and lots of energy. Ningxia wolfberries are very special wolfberries that are grown in the Ningxia region of China. The soil there is irrigated by the Yellow River that originates in the Himalayan mountains. Ningxia Red is a juice that has Ningxia wolfberries along with: pomegranates, blueberries, red raspberries, apricots, and dark grapes. It also has the highest quality therapeutic essential oils in it. These essential oils are high in d-limonenes and are known to be effective immune-stimulators.

Ningxia Red is a Young Living product. Ningxia Red is a Super Food juice that measures higher in antioxidant ability than any other juice on the market today. This measurement is based on the ORAC scale that was developed at Tufts University to measure antioxidant levels in foods. An independent lab - Brunswick Laboratory - has made thatd etermination.

If you are looking at these Super Food juices for yourself be sure to look at all of the ingredients. Many popular juices have what are called in the industry "junk juices". These are apple, white grape, and pear. They are called "junk juices" because they are cheap and have a high sugar content. And, of course, your sweeter juices are going to have these junk juices.Juices that promise to have energy giving capabilities often have short cut stimulants like green tea extract, refined sugars, caffeine, and ephedra. These are not desirable for sustained energy and stamina.

Ningxia Red has none of these. My belief in Ningxia Red juice was confirmed last month when I received my copy of "Immune Perspectives" in the mail from the Center for Advancement in Cancer Education (CACE). I've been associated with Susan Silberstein and this non-profit group for about 15 years. In this issue (Vol. XI.no.1), they highlighted Lycium barbarum as a "potent cancer inhibitor". This article, written by Earl Mindell, is full of promise about the anti-cancer effects of this fruit Lycium barbarum. (For more about CACE: http://www.beatcancer.org) If you want to learn more about this juice go to: http://www.ningxiared.com.

2. Spa Steals and Deals
==========================
January is the month we really need to get out to the Day Spas and get our pampering outside of the home. We have spent so much time working in our homes over the holidays with decorating, cooking, cleaning, and entertaining that this is the time, more than any time of the year, we need to get out and get pampered. The good news is that January is a month where many spas have "Steals and Deals". For example, in Philadelphia at Pierre and Carlo European Salon and Spa, you can get a free manicure with any treatment and a free 30 minute massage with a facial. And there is a Buy One Get One Free special. Want to know if Spas in your area are offering Steals and Deals? Click on this link and see if your city is listed here: http://tinyurl.com/u9xrz

3. Essential Oil Tip: Decoration Stains

Taking a red wreath holder off of the white door left a stain. To satisfy the "other" family members I tried the Mr. Clean Eraser Pads to no avail. Once again, enter Lemon Oil one of my heroes!

1. New Year's Eve Party for One
=================================
Being alone on New Year's Eve doesn't have to be so bad. As a matter of fact, it can be a wonderful thing. New Years Eve can be the perfect opportunity to renew yourself and get ready for the coming year. Here are some Party Package ideas for one:

--Decide to approach it as an evening of self-care
--Turn it into a ritual to let go of the old and bring in the new.
--Center the evening around your bath and bedroom.
--Diffuse the essential oil "Transformation - (see below).
--Buy a pretty journal in which to write reflections and projections
--Order from your favorite Chinese or Sushi restaurant
--Have a special champagne flute to drink either sparkling apple cider or champagne
--Do a dry brush body scrub to exfoliate the skin (let go of the old)
--Take a lavender bath and play soft gentle music as you visualize the new abundant year
--Use your favorite body lotion on damp skin after your bath
--Call in and visualize your new resolutions as you dowse yourself with lovely lotion and your favorite essential oils (shout them out loud - no one will hear you)
--Wear a comfortable and pretty lounge outfit - silk or satin
--Make your own maraca for when the clock strikes 12 and dance around your bedroom (To make a maraca: you need 2 paper plates, dried beans and tape. Fill one plate with a handful of dried beans, place the other plate on top, face down and tape together - making sure you seal all the way around).
--Make an edible necklace out of licorice (read about the health benefits of licorice - and order gluten-free licorice here: http://tinyurl.com/yy5evg
--Watch one of these movies and munch on your necklace:
Little Miss Sunshine
The Wedding Planner
Overboard
Baby Boomer
Liar Liar
My Best Friend's Wedding
Dante's Peak
Volcano
The Beautician and the Beast

--Call your favorite people and leave loving messages on their voicemails
--Call yourself and leave a loving message on your voicemail

1.New Year's Resolutions: We Make 'Em, We Break 'Em
===================================================
By Marsha Jordan
97% of people who make New Year's resolutions abandon them within 30 days. With a failure rate like that, why should I even bother? Is there a secret to successfully keeping my resolutions? Maybe I should resolve to gain weight, exercise less, develop bad habits, procrastinate, and watch more TV in the new year. Maybe I could keep resolutions like those. No, that's not the answer. We need to resolve to do things in the new year that will make us better people and will improve the world.
Here are four simple tips to make keeping those resolutions easier:
--Start with small steps
- Don't resolve to lose 30 pounds. Resolve to skip dessert once a week and exercise once a week. After these small changes become habits, implement bigger changes and increase your exercise time. Small successes will inspire you to move forward. If your goals are too lofty, you're doomed to failure. Start small and work your way up to bigger and better things over time.
--Be specific - Don't set general goals. If you resolve to be a better spouse this year, you don't have a plan; so chances are it won't happen. Think of a specific thing your spouse would like you to do for him or her (like giving a back rub at the end of the day, picking up your underwear, or taking out the garbage without being asked). Resolve to make the effort to do that one thing on a regular basis. Small changes can make a big difference in your relationship. Little things DO mean a lot.
--Have some accountability. We all need someone who will check up on us. Knowing that someone will ask how I'm doing will motivate me to work toward the goal. Share with a friend what you've determined to do and ask them to check back with you each week. There's a greater chance that you'll put forth some effort when you're expecting to give a report on your progress.
--Choose to do something that has a payoff. If you resolve to eat more liver this year or to walk 5 miles and do 300 sit ups each day, what pleasure will you derive from that? Set goals that will provide a sense of satisfaction upon completion. Determine to do something that you'll enjoy so much that you'll want to continue doing it.

Here is a resolution you can easily keep this year. Give some cheer to a sick child in 2007. It's a small step that takes only a few moments and can cost you nothing. The payoff is knowing that you've brought a little more joy into the life of a suffering little one. Visit the HUGS and HOPE web site (http://www.hugsandhope.org/) and read about the kids featured there. Choose a child and send him or her a cheery email or post card. That's all there is to it. This is a goal you can accomplish: Make a difference this year -- one smile at a time. Be in the 3% who will achieve success at keeping resolutions this year. And one of the smilesyou create just might be your own! Author Marsha Jordan is founder of the HUGS and HOPE charity for seriously ill and injured children. She is author of "Hugs, Hope, and Peanut Butter," inspirational reading illustrated by 40 sick kids.

=============================================
3. Useless Knowledge About New Years Eve
=============================================
From A Dictionary of Superstitions:
--On the stroke of 12, every door in the house has to be opened to allow the old year to go out. A visitor arriving before 12 must not leave by the same door through which he came.
--Never thrown any ashes, or dirty water, or any articles, however worthless, out of your house on New Year's Day. It brings ill luck; but you may bring in as many honestly gotten goods as you can procure.
--Celebrating January 1st began with Julius Caesar: Julius Caesar created a new calendar and began it with the month of January, named for Janus, the two-faced god. (Today we use the Gregorian calendar, revised from Caesar's - it was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582.)
--Auld Lang Syne is a old Scottish tune that band leader Guy Lombardo turned into a New Year's Eve tradition in 1929. He and his Royal Canadians band played at the Roosevelt Hotel on NewYears Eve and it was broadcast over the radio for all Americans to hear and it became an instantaneous hit. Here are the words in case you need to practice this week! "Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne. We'll take a cup of kindness yet for auld lang syne."
============================================
4. Essential Oil Tip: Transform Your Life
============================================
The essential oil blend "Transformation" can support the changes you want to make in your belief system (Essential Desk Reference, Third Edition, p.123). Here are the single oils that make up this blend:
--Lemon
--Peppermint
--Sandalwood
--Clary Sage
--Frankincense
--Idaho Balsam Fir
--Rosemary
--Cardamom

Diffuse for most effective use. Order your oils and diffuser from your Young Living distributor or by going to Young Living's Website

6.Recipe of the Week: Cheese and Thyme Twists
==============================================
A great companion to your New Year's Eve cocktail or champagne
--1 C. grated Reggiano Parmigiano cheese
--1 C. grated aged Cheddar cheese
--2 t. salt--1 t. cayenne pepper
--1 T. dried thyme
--Flour for dusting the work surface
--1 (17.3-oz) pkg. (2 sheets) frozen puff pastry
--1 egg, beaten

Mix together Reggiano Parmigiano, Cheddar, salt, pepper and thyme. Roll out one sheet of the pastry into a square about 12 or 13 inches on a side. Brush surface with the egg. Sprinkle 3/4 cup of cheese mixture onto the top half of the sheet of dough. Fold bottom up on top of the cheese and roll out again into a large rectangle. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of the cheese mixture all over the surface and press into the dough with the rolling pin. Using a pizza cutter, cut into strips 3/4-inch wide. Twist each strip into a corkscrew shape, and refrigerate on a non-stick baking sheet. Repeat with the other sheet. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400° F. Bake twists 15 minutes until golden. Cool and serve.

7. HSL's Joke or Cute Quote of the Week
=========================================
New Year's Prayer

May we get a clean bill of health from our dentist, our psychiatrist, our ophthalmologist, our cardiologist, our gastroenterologist, our urologist, our proctologist, our gynecologist, our podiatrist, our plumber, our hairdresser, and the IRS. May our hair, our teeth, our face lift, our abs, our honey cakes, and our stocks not fall and may our blood pressure, our triglycerides, our cholesterol, our white blood count, our weight and our mortgage interest rates not rise. May we find a way to travel from anywhere to anywhere in the rush hour in less than an hour and when we get there, may we find a parking space. May our computers not crash or catch a virus. May the internet increase speed so that we can go virtually at the speed of enlightenment. May we be sensitive to the needs of others and create balance with our own. May we accept that we may not keep up with our New Year's resolutions. May we can laugh at ourselves and realize that if were supposed to touch our toes while exercising, nature would have put them further up our bodies; and, the reason so many of us take up jogging is to hear heavy breathing again. May what we see in the mirror delight us and what others see in us, delight them. May someone love us enough to accept and forgive our faults, be blind to our blemishes, and tell the world about our virtues. May the telemarketers wait until after we finish dinner to call us. May our checkbooks and budgets balance.May we remember to say "I love you" at least once a day to our spouse, our child, our parent, all of our significant others. May we live in a world at peace, with awareness of the beauty in every sunset, flower, baby's smile, lover's kiss, and every wonderful astonishing beat of our heart. May we smile and laugh throughout the year.

1. Mistletoe - For More Than Just Kissin'
=========================================
When we think of mistletoe we think of Christmas time and kisses. In European folklore, mistletoe has been considered one of the most magical and sacred of plants. It is considered to have "life-giving" power, protect against poisoning, and act as anaphrodisiac. You might question how mistletoe is known for those things given some believe it is derived from bird dung. "Mistel" is the Anglo-Saxon word for "dung," and "tan" is the word for "twig". So, mistletoe means "dung-on-a-twig".
How does all of this connect to kissing? Mistletoe was believed to have the power of bestowing fertility, so kissing under the mistletoe became a marriage rite.

But there is more to mistletoe than its folklore. Mistletoe has many healing properties. In Germany it is used to treat circulation and respiratory problems. It is also prescribed in Europe for treatment of cancerous tumors (http://tinyurl.com/yj76u5). There is potential value in mistletoe being effective intreating female reproductive disorders, the immune system, and the nervous system: (as seen here in Herbalgram: http://tinyurl.com/ydwwmx)

But for those who just want to keep mistletoe for kissing purposes - make sure to observe the correct etiquette: a man should pluck a berry when he kisses a woman under the mistletoe, and when the last berry is gone, there should be no more kissing!
